Who is C P Radhakrishnan, BJP pick as NDA's Vice-Presidential candidate?
An RSS member from the young age of 16 — at an event in 2023, he described himself as 'a proud RSS cadre' — he won two Lok Sabha elections from Coimbatore as a BJP candidate, in 1998 and 1999, the first time with the highest victory margin in the state in polls held soon after the bomb blasts in the town allegedly meant to target L K Advani. Radhakrishnan served as a BJP National Executive member and Tamil Nadu president from 2004 to 2007 and in recent years has served as the governor of Jharkhand and Maharashtra.
Radhakrishnan's Raj Bhavan tenure in Ranchi was eventful, though he commented once that governors should remain free from politics. Soon after taking over, he raised eyebrows for undertaking a tour of the state, while insisting that he wanted to act as a bridge between the state and the Centre. He often asserted that his main focus was to improve the lives of tribals and underprivileged communities in Jharkhand, and in a rather political message, told The Indian Express in an interview, that tribals should be kept out of a Uniform Civil Code.
When there was a growing shadow of Central agencies over Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren, Radhakrishnan's role came under focus. Asked about why the Election Commission opinion on Soren regarding the issue of mining lease to him continued to remain sealed, Radhakrishnan said persons who are found guilty will have to face consequences. He had also hinted at 'difficulties' in revealing the same, without specifying.
When DMK leader and Tamil Nadu minister Udhayanidhi Stalin spoke about 'annihilation of Sanatan Dharma', Radhakrishnan waded in, referring to him as 'a child' from Tamil Nadu, and said those who try to destroy Sanatan Dharma would perish by their own act.
In July 2024, Radhakrishnan was appointed the governor of Maharashtra.

Outsiders running Punjab govt via proxy, alleges state chief BJP Sunil Jakhar
Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar launched a scathing attack on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and claimed that 'outsiders' were running the Punjab government. Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar Demanding clarity on who framed the controversial land pooling policy, Jakhar, while addressing the 'Kisan Mazdoor Fateh Rally' in Rajpura, claimed that it was either AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal or Manish Sisodia who framed the policy, while the Punjab chief secretary was made the chair of this committee. 'Neither CM (Bhagwant Mann) nor his cabinet was involved, yet Punjabis are paying the price. Kejriwal is working as the proxy CM. Punjab voted for Bhagwant Mann, not Kejriwal,' Jakhar said while thanking all the farmers and BJP workers for their efforts and pressure that led to the scrapping of the anti-farmer policy. Punjab BJP working president Ashwani Sharma said that the BJP's consistent fight at the block and tehsil levels forced the government to withdraw its anti-farmer agenda. 'AAP's expiry date has arrived. The people of Punjab demand Modi Sarkar for real change. Even promises like MSP on 24 crops by AAP remain unfulfilled,' he said. BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh alleged that the AAP leaders struck a deal with the 'land mafia' to collect election funds. Chugh slammed AAP for turning Punjab into an 'ATM' to fund its Delhi politics. 'Chief minister Bhagwant Mann has reduced himself to a puppet CM, dancing to the tunes of leaders like Manish Sisodia and Satinder Jain, both of whom have already faced jail terms. AAP da Punjab is being run not for the people, but for mafias and corrupt leaders,' Chugh said. Sharma praised the BJP government in Haryana for providing minimum support price on 24 crops as against Punjab's 'anti-farmer' policies, including the land pooling scheme, which he alleged aimed at 'snatching farmers' lands'. The BJP will hold rallies in all the 117 Assembly constituencies in Punjab to mobilise public support, he announced. Referring to the withdrawal of the land pooling policy, Union minister Ravneet Singh Bittu called it a victory for the people of Punjab. 'This is not just a political success but a fight for our land, and it is a victory for every farmer. Only the BJP can free Punjab from mounting debt and bring true relief through pro-people welfare schemes and development-driven governance,' he said.

CP Radhakrishnan is NDA's VP Pick: Rajnath seeks Kharge's support. Who will INDIA bloc field?
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday evening spoke to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge to seek support for the National Democratic Alliance's (NDA) Vice Presidential candidate CP Radhakrishnan, news agency ANI said, quoting sources. Vice Presidential election, scheduled for 9 September, will be held under the supervision of Rajnath Singh on behalf of the NDA. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju has been made the election agent, the news agency said. Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan was announced as NDA candidate for the Vice Presidential election on Sunday. The announcement was made by BJP National President JP Nadda after the party's Parliamentary Board meeting in New Delhi. The candidature comes almost a month afterJagdeep Dhankharresigned asVice President on 21 July, opening the contest for his successor. Dhankhar, 74, assumed office in August 2022 and served until 2027. The electorate or the electoral college comprises all members of both Houses of Parliament — elected and nominated — using a proportional representation system via a single transferable vote. The MPs cast a single transferable vote with a secret ballot. Ideally, it should be an NDA vs INDIA bloc candidate fight for the Vice Presidential polls. The INDIA bloc is yet to announce its candidate. The last date of filing nomination is 21 August. The Opposition INDIA bloc will meet today to discuss their nominee for the Vice Presidential elections. Kharge will preside over a meeting of the parliamentary floor leaders of the INDIA bloc at 10:15 AM, where the leaders are likely to discuss the issue. In case INDIA bloc doesn't field its candidate, Radhakrishnan will be elected unupposed as next Vice President of India. BJP President Nadda said that the party would reach out to the Opposition to ensure a consensus and possibly an unopposed election. "We will talk to the opposition as well. We should also get their support so that together we can ensure an unopposed election for the post of Vice President. As we said earlier, we have been in touch with them, and our senior leaders have contacted them earlier as well and even now, we will remain in touch with them, and all our NDA colleagues have supported us. CP Radhakrishnan is our NDA's candidate for Vice President," Nadda said while addressing a conference here. Overall, the electoral college currently has 788 MPs, 588 in Lok Sabha and 245 in Rajya Sabha. It consists of 233 elected members of the Rajya Sabha, 12 nominated members of the Rajya Sabha, and 543 elected members of the Lok Sabha for the Vice Presidential Election scheduled on 9 September. As things stand, the ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance(NDA) has a majority in the electorate. There are fair chances that Radhakrishnan will be the next Vice President of India. Radhakrishnan is currently serving as the 24th Governor of Maharashtra, a post he assumed on 31 July 2024. He earlier served as the Governor of Jharkhand from February 2023 to July 2024. He also held additional charge as the Governor of Telangana and Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry between March and July 2024. A veteran BJP leader, Radhakrishnan, was elected to the Lok Sabha from Coimbatore twice and previously served as the Tamil Nadu BJP State President. His political life started earlier, with him being associated with organisations like the RSS and Jan Sangh at the age of 16 in 1974. And in 1996, he became the secretary of the BJP in Tamil Nadu. He was elected as MP from the Coimbatore parliamentary constituency in 1998, in which he won by a margin of 1,50,000 votes, and was re-elected in 1999 from the same constituency. In 2006, he was appointed as the state president of the BJP in Tamil Nadu, during which he actively raised social and developmental issues. Radhakrishnan was born on 20 October 1957 in Tiruppur, Tiruppur district of Tamil Nadu. By profession, he is an agriculturist and industrialist. We should also get their support so that together we can ensure an unopposed election for the post of Vice President. The Election Commission has announced that polling for the Vice Presidential election would take place on 9 September, with counting of votes scheduled for the same day. The last date for filing nominations is August 21, while candidates can withdraw their nominations until August 25.

Don't use 'not found suitable' tag to deny SC, ST teachers appointments, promotions: Parl panel
AI-generated image NEW DELHI: Touching a raw nerve among the deprived communities and champions of social justice, a key parliamentary panel said the "Not Found Suitable (NFS)" tag should not be used to deny SC and ST teachers opportunities in appointments and promotions, acknowledging the prevalence of the controversial practice while urging "better judgment" in recruitment of faculty members in universities. The Parliamentary Committee on SC/ST Welfare, while making the observation in context of a review of appointments in Delhi University, weighed in on a subject that has become a matter of wider concern. "While interacting with SC/ST teachers welfare association of DU, a glaring issue that came to fore was declaration of SC/ST teachers as 'NFS' for posts earmarked for them," it noted in a report tabled in the Parliament in its ongoing monsoon session. "The committee vehemently condemns the usage of the term 'NFS' to deny eligible SC/ST teachers opportunities in appointments and promotions. The committee opines that declaring SC/ST candidates 'NFS' is not only inappropriate and hurts the sentiments of deserving, eligible and well qualified SC/ST candidates," the panel, headed by BJP MP Faggan Singh Kulaste, noted. The NFS debate revolves around allegations that authorities in educational institutions are manipulating fair employment opportunities for Dalits and tribals by dismissing candidatures as lacking suitability for faculty positions. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Could This NEW Collagen Blend Finally Reduce Your Cellulite? Vitauthority Learn More Undo Claiming large-scale vacancies against SC/ST quota in central universities, leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi recently blamed the governing BJP dispensation for 'NFS', which, he said, was being used to deny the marginalised communities leadership roles in education. "NFS is the new Manuvaad now. Eligible candidates from SC/ST/OBC communities are being deliberately declared 'unsuitable' so that they are kept away from education and leadership," he had posted on social media, triggering strong backlash from BJP that accused Congress for marginalising the backward classes. Now, the parliamentary panel has said "in the present era there is no dearth of eligible SC/ST candidates holding impressive credentials in teaching fields. The committee recommend that SC/ST candidates applying for teaching posts should be judged solely on their academic prowess and that strict norms should not cloud the better judgement of selection panel." The panel urged that SC/ST candidates should be given ample opportunities and should be helped in achieving their professional goals.
