IIT Madras launches data-driven road safety push in 100 high-risk districts

CHENNAI: The Centre of Excellence for
(CoERS) at
has launched a
programme to tackle road crashes in 100 accident-prone districts in 17 states.
Supported by the ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH), the initiative aims at delivering district-specific, evidence-based solutions under a structured 5E framework—engineering, enforcement, education, emergency care and empathy.

The programme was launched at an alignment session held in New Delhi on May 20 with participation from central and state govt officials, district representatives and road safety experts.
According to official data, India recorded more than 4.6 lakh road accidents annually. While human error remains a primary cause, localised issues such as poor road design, inadequate enforcement and delayed emergency response also contribute significantly.
The DDHI (Data-Driven Hyperlocal Intervention) programme aims at addressing these granular challenges.
Unlike top-down national programmes, DDHI adopts a bottom-up approach, empowering
(DRSCs) to develop and implement their own strategies based on data from the e-Detailed Accident Report (eDAR) and powered by the
.
Districts will use tools developed by CoERS such as the Sanjaya Dashboard for crash visualisation, Field Perception Survey (FPS) for hotspot mapping and Trauma Care Preparedness Level (TPL) app to assess emergency care infrastructure.
Speaking at the event, Union minister Nitin Gadkari said, 'Real change happens when data empowers district authorities to act on accident spots.'
MoRTH secretary V Umashankar said, 'Each accident has a story best understood at the local level. With actionable data, we can reduce preventable fatalities.'
CoERS head Prof Venkatesh Balasubramanian said, 'Through this initiative, we aim to empower district leadership with practical tools and capacity-building support that integrate human factors and data driven interventions to deliver measurable improvements in road safety outcomes.".
Periodic audits and measurable assessments will track effectiveness. Learnings from the programme will be documented for replication in other districts, creating a national repository of best practices.

Ever since their launch, the electric-origin SUVs from Mahindra, namely the Mahindra BE 6 and Mahindra XEV 9e have been doing well in the market. The company recently announced that it had sold 10,000 units in just 70 days, which is a good number to boast about. However, the competition is not sitting still either, and Tata Motors has now launched the Tata at a starting price of Rs 21.49 lakh (ex-showroom, introductory). While all the models are feature-rich and come with an incredible amount of technology, there is one place where the Tata has inched ahead, and that is the fact that the comes with AWD tech. But is Mahindra going to sit still? The answer comes in the form that the Mahindra BE Rall-E has been spotted testing. So, what can one expect from this upcoming variant of the BE 6? The front design differs from the BE 6, featuring circular headlamps and slim LED DRLs. advertisementThe Mahindra BE Rall-E explainedThe Mahindra BE Rall-E was showcased some time back as the more rugged and off-road friendly electric origin SUV from the brand. Spyshots reveal that the Mahindra BE Rall-E continues with its aggressive design as seen on the concept version. The fascia is not identical to the BE 6 and comes with round lamps and sleek LED DRLs. There is a big skid plate in the front as well. The tyres used on the concept were surely off-road-centric, but we believe the production version will come with all-terrain tyres. High ground clearance and a flat floor should further enhance the off-road abilities of the Mahindra BE Rall-E. The roof rack, though, is something which the company might do away with or offer as an optional extra. The roof rack might be removed by the company or offered as an optional feature. advertisementThe interior trim of the Mahindra BE Rall-E though, might be identical to the BE 6, considering it already has a futuristic theme to it. But do expect different trims and more rugged BE Rall-E: The AWD tech The chassis of the Mahindra BE 6 and the Mahindra XEV 9e is ready to adopt a dual-motor setup and, as a result, support AWD technology. Mahindra currently offers the BE 6 with a choice of multiple battery packs that include a 59kWh and 79kWh unit. The 59kWh variants have a driving range of 535km, while the 79kWh trims return a range of 682km. However, power is sent to the rear wheels only. All that could change with the BE Rall-E. Some time back, Mahindra invited us to their manufacturing facility in Chakan, Maharashtra, to see how their new electric-origin SUVs are made and the tech that drives them. The company showcased the electric SUVs in detail, and one of the details was the chassis. The bare chassis revealed that the platform was ready for a dual-motor setup with spaces provided up front and at the back. The combined motor tech would then make both the BE 6 and the XEV 9e capable of going AWD. With a dual-motor set-up, these SUVs could get faster and have the go anywhere capability as well. There is a big skid plate at the back as well. While the company remains tight-lipped about the project, we believe that these new variants will come next year once the electric origin SUVs have created a strong hold in the Indian market. Centre may bring back dog-nose trucks

The Centre is working on new regulations that may soon bring back the 'dog nose' design for trucks and heavy vehicles — a structural change that could improve road safety and logistics efficiency, Union road transport and highways secretary V Umashankar said on Tuesday. The 'dog nose' refers to a truck design in which the engine and hood protrude in front of the driver's cabin — a common sight until the late 1990s. That design gave way to flat-faced cabins when regulations started limiting the length of freight vehicles, which in turn began incentivised maximising cargo space. This, he said, inadvertently, may have introduced safety risks. Umashankar now says that this seemingly small change could be crucial to improving visibility and reaction time on highways. 'After all driving is based on sensory perception, your mind calculates based on what you see and takes actions. So, if the driver is not sitting on top of the engine, he can have a little bit of extra time.' 'This simple alteration gives drivers that extra bit of space and time — a space cushion — to see ahead and respond better,' he said. Umashankar was speaking at the sidelines of Urban Adda 2025, a three-day urban mobility conference in Delhi organised by the Raahgiri Foundation in partnership with the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) and GuruJal, and supported by Nagarro. HT is the media partner for the event. Automobile safety experts say both flat-fronted and dog-nosed configurations have their own advantages. An automobile designer, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, 'In high-speed scenarios, the extra space provided by the nose would give better reaction time for the drivers, but flat-fronted trucks offer better visibility, which might be more advantageous in non-high-speed conditions, and particularly keeping in mind pedestrian safety.' Umashankar said the ministry will soon begin consultations with truck manufacturers and other stakeholders to facilitate the transition. However, even if the regulation is enforced today, it would take at least two years for manufacturers to rework assembly lines and comply. Beyond truck design, Umashankar said the government is also exploring the introduction of 'puller trailers' — multiple-trailer configurations already in use in several developed countries — to enhance freight efficiency and reduce logistics costs. 'We can have not just single, but multiple trailer systems. This will bring down the cost of freight movement and make the economy more efficient,' he said. He added that road safety issues are not inherently complicated but require cooperation between authorities and citizens at the local level. 'You need entire neighbourhoods to act as pressure groups. That's when real change happens,' he said. Drawing from his experience as municipal commissioner in Gurugram and Faridabad, Umashankar noted that urban mobility remains a pressing issue in most Indian cities. In many dense urban areas, app-based cab services are filling the gaps left by inadequate bus systems, he said. 'These services have not reduced congestion, but they have provided a certain level of mobility,' he said, adding that the government will come up with aggregator guidelines by the end of the month, which will cover safety, service availability, and driver welfare. He also struck a note of caution on metro rail as a silver-bullet solution to urban transit woes. 'Yes, metros can do bulk people movement, but Mumbai, for example, is a typical city which grew because it had a rail network that developed in the early 1900s when land was available and affordable. Today, creating a metro system takes 5–10 years. Without a complete network, ridership stays low,' he said. He pointed to his own tenure in Gurugram, where he helped launch a public bus service funded by a 1% surcharge on real estate transactions. That viability gap fund made fares affordable. 'Now, most cities do not make this kind of provision. So, we have loss-making services,' pointing to the failing service levels and bus ridership across major cities in India.'
