Anti-drug campaign launched in Irinjalakuda
Aiming to create a drug-free Irinjalakuda, the campaign 'Madhuram Jeevitham' (Life is Sweet) was officially launched by Minister for Higher Education R. Bindu on Sunday. Speaking at the inauguration, the Minister emphasised that the initiative goes beyond anti-drug awareness, targeting a broader spectrum of social dangers affecting the youth today.
'There is an urgent need to address the rising trend of violence and destructive behaviour among young people,' Dr. Bindu said. 'This campaign integrates creative, community-driven programmes that can reach the grassroots, encouraging youth to embrace the sweetness of life and view it with positivity and purpose.'
The campaign includes the formation of vigilance committees at every level, strengthening of counselling services, and organising awareness drives in local bodies, industries, and institutions. The Minister called on the support of NSS volunteers, Kudumbashree members, and other grassroots forces to lead the anti-drug movement.
She also directed all educational institutions in the Irinjalakuda constituency to form vigilance committees by June 26, alongside conducting competitions and awareness activities.
The launch event featured a pledge against drug abuse, lighting of a unity lamp, anti-drug songs, and thematic dance performances. The event was presided over by Irinjalakuda Municipal chairperson Marykutty Joy.

1,200 youths register as civil defence volunteers in North Karnataka
Hubballi: Around 1,200 youths have registered as civil defence volunteers (CDV) across the North Karnataka region. MY Bharat, the youth engagement platform under the ministry of youth affairs and sports, govt of India, launched the registration drive. This nationwide call is part of a concerted effort to empower young citizens to take up vital roles in the national cause, particularly during emergencies and crises. Volunteers will receive a weeklong specialised training in collaboration with national and state disaster management agencies. District youth officer M Gautam Reddy told TOI that the ministry of youth affairs and sports launched the registration to select civil defence volunteers in May. Reddy said the initiative not only instils a strong sense of civic responsibility and discipline among youth but also equips them with practical life-saving skills and training to act swiftly in critical situations. The ministry has provided a platform for the youths. Therefore, youths are encouraged to come forward and mobilise all interested youth and the public for this national cause. MB Dalapati, programme coordinator, NSS Cell, Karnataka University, Dharwad, said earlier, NSS volunteers used to get such training. "Now, a youth in the age group 15-29 can be a volunteer. Training will be given to the volunteers. This includes rescue and evacuation operations, first aid and emergency care, traffic management, crowd control, public safety, and assisting in disaster response and rehabilitation efforts," he said. Malatesh K, an MSW student of Karnataka University, Dharwad, said many college students and NSS volunteers have registered. "We are also creating awareness in this regard," he added.

Kudumbashree to provide all vegetables needed for Onasadya: Minister
Kudumbashree will provide all vegetables needed for the Onam sadya this year, Minister for Local Self-government M.B. Rajesh has said. He was speaking after performing the State-level inauguration of the Kudumbashree's Onakani project at Kottukal panchayat here on Wednesday. Onakani is a project to make available safe and pesticide-free vegetables to the people for the Onam festival. 'Onam with Kudumbashree' is the theme. Onam kits that include vegetables for the sadya, pickle, chips, payasam mix, and spice powders will be readied as part of Onakani. For this, the Kudumbashree has increased the land under cultivation four times. As much as 25,680 acres of land is under cultivation this year as compared to 6,800 acres last year. The Kudumbashree achieved a turnover of ₹7.8 crore through sale of vegetables and flowers last year. This year, hybrid seeds made available through its Jaivika plant nurseries will be cultivated. Each Kudumbashree community development society (CDS) will be sanctioned up to ₹25,000 as revolving fund. Training to the women farming groups in technical aspects such as preparing the land, sapling production, crop maintenance, and pest control will be given. A market for the vegetables will be found by the Kudumbashree. Kottukal CDS chairperson Vimala K. gifted Kudumbashree products to the Minister. Kottukal panchayat president Chandralekha K. spoke. District panchayat president D. Suresh Kumar presided.

Kudumbashree ‘Onakkani' to ensure safe vegetables
T'puram: Kudumbashree is implementing an 'Onakkani' project to provide safe and pesticide-free vegetables to the public for Onam. The goal is to cultivate 10,000 hectares across state through Kudumbashree farmers. In the district, the cultivation will be carried out on 1,992 acres across 83 community development society (CDS) units. The state-level inauguration of the project will be organized in Maruthurkonam ward of Kottukal panchayat on Wednesday. Local self-govt minister M B Rajesh will inaugurate the project while district panchayat president D Suresh Kumar will preside. As part of the project, technical training will be provided to farmers in all districts on nursery preparation, seedling production, crop maintenance, pest control and harvesting. TNN
