Kudumbashree Onam markets in 83 CDS in district

The Kudumbashree district mission will organise two Onam markets in each of the 83 community development societies (CDS) in Thiruvananthapuram. The Onam markets will be held for three to five days at the end of August or early September. The markets, held annually, are a platform for Kudumbashree entrepreneurs to showcase their products, including agri and livestock products, and pickles, pappadoms, and other value-added products, while consumers are able to get their Onam necessities at fair prices. Plans to organise a centralised food festival in convergence mode are also under way. As part of promoting the Pocketmart shopping app that will go live soon, the Kudumbashree will make available online 5,000 Onam hampers Statewide. The hampers that cost ₹799 plus delivery charges include nine products - chips, sarkaravaratti, payasam mix, sambar masala, chilli powder, coriander powder, turmeric, and veg masala. This is expected to bring in ₹40 lakh in total. Besides the online hampers, Onam kits will be supplied offline by each CDS. A kit will cost ₹750 and include 11 products, including chips, sarkaravaratti, chilli powder, coriander powder, turmeric, payasam mix, sambar masala, pickle, pappadom, and coconut oil, all contained in a bag with a uniform design and zip. With at least 100 kits expected to be supplied in each CDS, a turnover of at least ₹1 lakh is expected from the sale of the kits. The district mission also plans to take orders from government and private institutions for Onasadya in the city Corporation limits. Eight units will supply the sadya that will have a common menu. A minimum number of orders will likely be fixed by the mission for the Onasadya.

VS passes by slowly and silently, emotions outpour in varied ways

1 2 3 T'puram: Daksha, 12, clutched a red shoeflower as she stood beside her father, waiting for the special bus carrying the hearse of CPM veteran and former chief minister V S Achuthanandan to approach Kesavadasapuram in the state capital. She wanted to dedicate the flower to the favourite leader of the state, who is an emotion for many. Daksha was not alone. Several people — women and children, young and old — lined up on pavements clutching flowers all along the route taken by the funeral procession from Thiruvananthapuram to his hometown of Alappuzha. Unlike planned, the procession stopped at junctions where people had assembled, which was more or less at every turn. It was an incredible groundswell of emotions that welcomed the special bus. Many ran alongside the illuminated bus while others showered flower petals and struggled to crane their necks to grab a glimpse of their favourite leader as it drove by. People, including children, waited with drawings, paintings, flowers and wreaths. Each person held their own memories of the stalwart who played a very crucial role in making Kerala what it is now. They included the watch-and-ward of the assembly complex who saw him in action from close quarters, Kudumbashree workers, people who worked in the Secretariat during his days, SFI members from Karyavattom and the regular citizens who were in awe of the man whose life shaped the state's socio-political scene throughout his life. The fact that a crippling stroke took him off public life for more than five years did not dim the people's enthusiasm. They remembered him and missed him — not only for the fiery revolt at Punnapra but also for bulldozing corruption and mafia nexus when he was the CM and opposition leader. There were many poignant scenes en route. The police raised children upwards so that they could see VS lying in the hearse while many others from different walks of life threw roses into the bus. Women who waited for hours at Kazhakkoottam said they wanted to try to see him because "It'll not be possible to see him again. I love him so much. We all do," said a woman who waited for close to three hours by the roadside. The progress of the procession was sluggish because the crowd wanted to pay tribute. It took around one-and-a-half hours to cover the Secretariat- Pattom stretch. Though the number of people was less at Palayam and other parts of the city, it was a sea of people who were seen waiting at Karyavattom and Kazhakkoottam past 7pm when the procession reached there. People swamped the bus carrying red flags, shouting the favourite slogan "Kanne Karale VSae..." at Kazhakkoottam under the flyover while a huge number of people continued to wait at Attingal and Kollam, which is a Leftist fortress. People joined the motorcade in their cars and motorcycles flying red flags. What was striking was that many, irrespective of age groups, raised slogans reminiscing about the Punnapra-Vayalar revolt as if it was yesterday, though Achuthanandan took part in it a year before Independence.

From unniyappam to premium Cafe Kudumbashree, a story of culinary success

On a torrential August day 13 years ago, Shareefa Kalathingal's determination ignited a spark that would change her family's fate. With a meagre loan of ₹100 from a neighbour, she conjured up 10 packets of unniyappam, a sweet treat that would become her ticket out of poverty. Her children and husband, Sakeer, a painter struggling to find work in the rainy season, waited eagerly for her humble offering. Little did she know that she was making a bold step towards a brighter future. With her packets of freshly made unniyappam, Shareefa nervously approached the local grocery shop at Hajiyarpalli, Malappuram. The shop owner's initial skepticism slowly gave way to surprise as the treats sold out quickly. Before long, Shareefa's modest venture sparked a flurry of orders for pathiri and chapati, setting her on a path to culinary success. In 2018, Shareefa launched Muthu's Catering as part of the Kudumbashree movement. With a ₹2 lakh loan from Kudumbashree, she expanded her catering business and introduced an innovative 'dabba' scheme. Under this initiative, she began delivering lunches to staff members at the Civil Station, Malappuram. Undeterred by the COVID-19 pandemic, Shareefa's entrepreneurial spirit thrived. She started a food delivery initiative to Government Medical College Hospital at Manjeri, serving breakfast and rice gruel to 2,000 persons daily and by employing 15 women. This endeavour led to long-term partnerships in catering. Today, her team continues to deliver breakfast to patients at Manjeri medical college. Shareefa expanded her operations to manage the canteens at Kottakkal Ayurveda College and Central School, Malappuram. Her reputation as a reliable caterer got a boost as she began receiving major catering orders from Kudumbashree. Her culinary skills impressed the ministers who took part in an adalat at Swalat Nagar, where she served biryani to 1,500 people. The event sparked a buzz about starting a premium hotel, and soon her vision took shape with Cafe Kudumbashree at Kottakkal. Cafe Kudumbashree offers a range of amenities, including parcel service, take-away counters, waiting area, catering, online ordering, parking and restrooms. The menu offers Kerala, Arabic and Chinese dishes, along with local Malappuram specialities. The cafe is always bustling. Shareefa's success has made her a support pillar for many families. With 30 staff under her wing, Shareefa's venture is booming. She has fulfilled her dreams, owning a home and giving her children quality education. Her story, from selling just 10 packets of unniyappam to catering big events, showcases her grit and confidence.
