
UK electric car sales jumped by over 25 per cent in May
Nearly 33,000 new EVs hit the roads in May, up 25.8 per cent on 2024 figures. That means electric cars account for 20.9 per cent of all new car sales so far in 2025, some way off the government's ZEV Mandate target of 28 per cent. Car makers that fail to hit the 28 per cent figure face fines or will have to find ways to use credits that can include buying them from other car makers.
Plug-in hybrid cars are also growing in popularity with registrations up 50.8 per cent on last May with a total of 17,898 PHEVs sold. And although petrol models still account for the vast majority of new car sales, taking 49 per cent of all car sales so far in 2025, the figure for May shows a drop of 12.5 per cent year-on-year.
Overall, the car market returned to growth in May, up by 1.6 per cent and the best May for car sales since 2021. However, SMMT says that the fleet and business sector was responsible for the bulk of sales with sales to private buyers down for the second consecutive month.
Although EV sales are buoyant, SMMT says that much of that is down to discounting with SMMT CEO Mike Hawes calling for government incentives to boost demand in the upcoming spending review. 'A return to growth for new car registrations in May is welcome but manufacturer discounting on new products continues to underpin the market, notably for electric vehicles. This cannot be sustained indefinitely as it undermines the ability of companies to invest in new product development – investments which are integral to the decarbonisation of all road transport.
'Next week's spending review is the opportunity for government to double down on its commitments to net zero by driving demand through fiscal measures that boost the market and shore up our competitiveness.'
SMMT is calling on the government to halve VAT on new electric vehicle purchases saying it could lead to an additional 267,000 new EVs being used instead of fossil fuel vehicles over the next three years, potentially reducing CO2 emissions by six million tonnes annually. SMMT is also saying that EVs should be removed from the Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) Expensive Car Supplement, while VAT for public and home charging should be equalised at 5 per cent to encourage more consumers to consider switching to electric vehicles.
Commenting on the latest registration figures, Fiona Howarth, founder of Octopus Electric Vehicles said 'we've seen yet another strong month for EVs – proving that people want to drive electric. There has been a clear shift in the market, with car manufacturers new and old bringing out new, cheaper models every month, improving driver choice and helping to make the switch to cleaner, low-cost driving.'

Motor Insurers 'Boost Competition as Electric Vehicles Go Mainstream'
Motor insurers are boosting competition in the electric vehicle market as EVs become increasingly more mainstream, new analysis from insight partner Consumer Intelligence suggests. Its data shows 11 new insurance products began quoting for EVs on a major price comparison website last year with just three to four for petrol, diesel, or hybrid vehicles. Insurers are launching tailored policies with features like charging equipment protection, EV breakdown support, and even carbon offsetting. The industry is responding to market changes – Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders data shows new BEV sales rose 35.2% in the first four months of this year compared with the same period last year. Petrol sales dropped 10% and diesel 13.2%. Premiums are falling after sharp rises in 2023 as the expansion in repair networks drive improvements in turnround times and richer claims data is helping insurers to improve pricing. Risk profiles of electric vehicle drivers are now more like petrol and diesel customers. Some EV insurers have slashed premiums by as much as 18% and one insurer recently increased its EV quotability – the frequency at which it quotes – by 40 percentage points and gained an increase of 12% in its share of the top five quote positions. EV premiums remain relatively high as despite them being involved in fewer incidents generally, the claims tend to be more expensive due to the need for specialist repairs and battery complexity. Location remains an issue with prices higher in the South East in April than in the North West due to differences in traffic congestion, theft and claims rates. Ian Hughes, chief executive of Consumer Intelligence, said: 'As BEVs become more mainstream, insurers are no longer treating them as niche risks. That's creating space for more confident, competitive pricing. 'While electric vehicle sales remain just short of the government's Zero Emission Vehicle mandate target of 22%, the trajectory is unmistakable, the shift is accelerating and insurers are responding.'

Drivers warned of £425 extra car tax charge following major change

Rachel Reeves, the Labour Party Chancellor, announced changes to the Expensive Car Supplement earlier this year. Drivers with vehicles worth over £40,000 are liable for the expensive car supplement, also known as the luxury car tax, which amounts to £425 annually from the second to the sixth year after registration. Electric cars were previously exempt from the levy; however, this was changed on April 1. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said the extra charges have created a "brake on demand" at a critical juncture for the car sector. However, drivers keen to embrace eco-friendly motoring are being handed a £1,500 incentive through a government initiative aimed at slashing electric vehicle prices. The £650million Electric Car Grant (ECG) forms part of a broader £4.5billion governmental blueprint to tackle emissions, lower driving expenses and strengthen UK manufacturing. Mike Hawes, chief executive of the SMMT, said: "July's dip shows yet again the new car market's sensitivity to external factors, and the pressing need for consumer certainty. "Confirming which models qualify for the new EV grant, alongside compelling manufacturer discounts on a huge choice of exciting new vehicles, should send a strong signal to buyers that now is the time to switch." Jon Lawes, managing director at Novuna Vehicle Solutions, explained that the new EV grant for models under £37,000 is welcome, but its rushed rollout and limited industry consultation have "caused confusion". He warned that manufacturers are "scrambling to work out which models apply while consumers are left in limbo, wondering if they'll get up to £3,750 in savings, risking a slowdown in demand, particularly in private sales, which continue to lag behind fleets". Vicky Edmonds, CEO of EVA England, says: "We are delighted to see the first qualifying models announced for the Government's new Electric Car Grant. "Our members consistently identify high upfront costs as the biggest barrier to switching, and this support will give drivers the confidence to choose electric for their next new car purchase. "With recent sales dipping as drivers waited for details of the grant, today's announcement provides a welcome boost for interest in electric vehicles. "This funding has the potential to make electric cars more affordable for those who buy new, but further demand-led policies that support drivers buying in the used EV market will be crucial in helping many other drivers to make the switch." Sue Robinson, chief executive of the National Franchised Dealers Association, added: "We are disappointed to see a reversal of the gains made in June. "Looking ahead, we are likely to see continued pressure on the new vehicle market, due to weak economic growth."

Used car sales surge as buyers avoid pricey new models and EVs
Britons are buying more second-hand cars than they have done for five years as drivers' reluctance to cough-up for increasingly expensive new models - and EVs - sees appetite for used motors surge. Official figures published on Friday show that 4,017,106 pre-owned cars changed hands in the first half of 2025. That is up 2.2 per cent from a year earlier and is only 37,274 transactions below the same period in 2019, before the coronavirus crisis hit. Mike Hawes, boss of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, said: 'Surpassing the four million half-year milestone for the first time since 2019 shows the UK's used car market is building back momentum. That's good news for the industry and for motorists who benefit from more choice and affordability across a range of higher tech, cleaner vehicles.' However, the buoyance of the second-hand market comes in complete contrast to the new car sector, which has failed to bounce back from the pandemic and is being propped up by fleet and business sales rather than private buyers. The evidence of this was made clear earlier this week as the latest car parc data showed that the average age of motors on Britain's roads has hit a record high as drivers refuse to fork out for new models, shun EVs and keep their existing vehicles for longer. To put the success of the used car sector into perspective, registrations of new models grew by 3.5 per cent to 1,042,219 units in the first half of 2025 - a quarter of the four million second-hand transactions recorded over the same period. And while sales of brand-new cars are 18 per cent below the level in 2019, the second-hand market is down just 0.9 per cent. Between April and June, petrol was the best-selling used car fuel type, with transactions rising by 1.5 per cent to 1,134,387 units. Diesel declined by 4.3 per cent to 664,644 units. The demise of diesel is not due to a lack of demand but a dramatic shrinking of availability, with manufacturers culling them from their ranges in an effort to ditch their 'dirty' connotations while transitioning to electric vehicles. The statistics also show that, while car makers are eagerly trying to push battery-powered cars on customers aided by the recent availability of the Government's Electric Car Grant, it is combustion-engine motors that continue to dominate used transactions. With EVs particularly in their relative infancy and hybrids drip feeding into the used market, traditional petrol and diesel models make up 90 per cent of second-hand purchases. Hawes said that in order to maintain the used market's strong recent trajectory, a 'thriving new car market must be delivered across the segments', along with 'accelerated investment into the charging network to give every driver the ability to switch' to an EV. Swing to used car market is why Britons' cars are older than EVER The latest used car sales update comes just days after a review of official vehicle registrations figures by the RAC Foundation found that the average car on the country's roads at the end of 2024 was nine years and ten months - the oldest since records began. This is up from seven years and five months a decade earlier at the end of 2015. And back in 2003, the average age was just six year and a month. The transport policy and research organisation said the figures suggest both positives and negatives for Britain's drivers. Firstly, the quality of reliability of the average car appears to be improving, meaning vehicles are lasting the test of time far better than they have done previously. However, the numbers also suggest that inflated new model prices - especially during a cost-of-living squeeze - and the transition to electric vehicles has put motorists off changing their cars. Responding to the newly published data, James Wilson, chief operating officer of used car marketplace Motorway, said: 'Momentum is building in the used car market. New car supply issues and cost-of-living pressures continue to push buyers towards more affordable used options, particularly EVs. Price parity between EVs and ICE (internal combustion engine) cars has arrived. This shift, combined with rising consumer confidence, will accelerate EV adoption.'
