On April 19, Bhavnagar resident Yatish Sudhir Parmar's seven-member family left for Srinagar to attend a Ram Katha by spiritual leader Morari Bapu. The group was set to return to Gujarat in a few days but the Pahalgam terror attack on Tuesday brought their trip to the Valley to a tragic end as Yatish and his 17-year-old son Smit were among the 26 people killed in the incident.
Around 9pm on Wednesday night, the mortal remains of the two deceased arrived at Ahmedabad Airport from where they were taken to Bhavnagar by road in two ambulances. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, too, reached Bhavnagar Wednesday night.
Yatish and Smit are among the three tourists from the state who were killed in the Pahalgam terror attack, the Gujarat State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) confirmed on Wednesday.
While Yatish, 45, a resident of Waghawadi Road in Bhavnagar city, owned a salon and a restaurant, Smit was a Class 11 student at Vidyadhish School.
The Parmars – Yatish, his wife and son – hail from Palitana and have been staying in Bhavnagar for 20 years. They had gone to Jammu and Kashmir to attend Morari Bapu's Katha at Sher-i Kashmir International Convention Centre in Srinagar from April 19 to 27. The Parmars, along with four family members from his wife's side, left for Srinagar on April 19.
'They went to Pahalgam on Tuesday on an excursion, to capture some good photo memories. The elder son, who works in a laboratory in Bhavnagar, did not accompany them due to his job. Yatish's wife is on her way back to Gujarat. The entire family is in shock at the moment and waiting for everyone to be back home safe,' Bharat, Yatish's cousin, told The Indian Express.
Following the attack, Morari Bapu, who announced Rs 5 lakh to the families of deceased from Gujarat, has postponed his katha. 'Ram Katha 955, which is held in Srinagar, has been postponed after the 5th day until further notice due to the current situation in Jammu & Kashmir. Those who have attended the katha are safe and well and the reason for postponing is for everyone's safety and well being. The remaining four days of the Katha will resume when possible,' the announcement issued by Bapu's Shree Chitrakutdham Trust Wednesday stated.
The third deceased from Gujarat is Shailesh Himmat Kalthiya from Surat. Kalthiya, who worked with the State Bank of India in Mumbai, was on a holiday with his wife and children when the attack took place.
Two tourists from the state were injured in the attack. While Dabhi Vinodbhai, who sustained a firearm injury, is currently admitted at a Pahalgam hospital, Vinubhai Parmar, who suffered a splinter injury to his right upper arm, has been referred to Government Medical College, Anantnag.
Earlier in the day, Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi said arrangements were being made by the state government to bring the bodies of the three deceased back to Gujarat.
He further said, 'I am sure the government will find out the cowards who opened fire at the tourists based on their religion. All tourists who have lost their lives, their families (will) get justice for sure.'
According to sources, around 20-25 tourists from Gujarat, who had gone to Pahalgam for sightseeing, are returning to the state from Jammu and Kashmir.

'Judicial Balance To Be Struck In Grant Of Alimony': SC Raises Settlement Amount From Rs 1 L To Rs 5 L

Last Updated: The Supreme Court observed that the fact that the husband is not earning does not absolve him of the obligation to maintain his wife The Supreme Court has said that the objective of granting permanent alimony is to ensure that, in a marriage that does not survive and has one of the two spouses dependent on the other, such a spouse is not left without any source of support. At the same time, it is clear that the grant of permanent alimony cannot be a method of punishing the spouse who is asked to pay the said amount. A judicious balance has to be struck between the interests of both parties, a bench of Justices Sanjay Karol and Manoj Misra said. The court here enhanced the alimony awarded by the Punjab and Haryana High Court to an appellant wife from Rs one lakh to Rs five lakh. The High Court, by its judgement and order of June 2, 2022, confirmed the decree of divorce granted in favour of the respondent-husband, as originally granted by the Family Court, Faridabad, on December 14, 2018. The High Court further ordered that the respondent-husband would pay the appellant-wife a sum of Rs one lakh as alimony. The appellant-wife and respondent-husband were married on November 9, 2008. Soon thereafter, it was alleged that harassment of the former began at the hands of the latter's family. This culminated, according to the appellant-wife, with her being turned away from her matrimonial home on January 5, 2011, after being physically assaulted. A few months thereafter, litigation began inter se the parties in one form or another. The respondent-husband at first filed a petition under Section 9 of the Hindu Marriage Act 1955; the appellant-wife thereafter filed an FIR on November 15, 2011, under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. Prior thereto, she also filed proceedings under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, on May 26, 2011. The divorce proceedings were initiated by the respondent-husband on March 25, 2013. In its pendency, protracted and acrimonious litigation ensued between the parties. In the proceedings under the DV Act, the concerned court awarded Rs 2,000 per month to the appellant-wife. On September 17, 2016, she filed a petition under Section 125 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, which eventually resulted in an order in her favour granting Rs 6,000 per month as maintenance on September 5, 2019. The order of Rs 2,000 per month maintenance in the DV Act proceedings was also appealed against and was enhanced to Rs 5,000 per month by an order on January 20, 2018. The Additional Principal Family Judge, Faridabad, passed the judgment and decree on December 14, 2018, dissolving the marriage. The High Court confirmed the grant of dissolution of marriage and awarded Rs one lakh alimony to the appellant wife. Examining the matter limited to the quantum of alimony, the bench cited Parvin Kumar Jain Vs Anju Jain (2025), which, upon considering a host of pronouncements, culled out a non-exhaustive list of factors that a court must consider in granting permanent alimony, including status of the parties, reasonable needs of the wife and children, individual qualifications and employment status, independent income and assets, standard of life enjoyed by the wife, etc. The court also referred to Rajnesh Vs Neha, in which the Supreme Court observed that in computing permanent alimony, the fact that the husband is not earning (as the respondent-husband has submitted in his counter affidavit) does not absolve him of the obligation to maintain his wife. It has also been held that if the wife has been awarded maintenance in any other proceeding, she must disclose the same, and a set-off must take place. Having considered the law, the bench said, 'We are of the view that the High Court's determination of permanent alimony at Rs one lakh is insufficient. As such, in the attending facts and circumstances of this case, and without interfering with the final conclusion reached by both the Family Court and the High Court regarding the grant of divorce, we enhance the permanent alimony to be paid by the respondent-husband to the appellant wife by a sum of Rs four lakhs, bringing the total thereof to Rs five lakh." The court clarified that this would be a full and final settlement of all claims. It also said the amount would be payable in 10 equal instalments, with the final instalment being payable in the month of March 2026. The bench further held that the effect of this order would be that all other proceedings regarding maintenance stand subsumed by this payment. Child begging poses a challenge in Kalyana Karnataka

Ballari: In the Kalyana Karnataka region, child begging remains a persistent challenge, despite awareness initiatives and strict legislation. Official data from the State Directorate of Child Rights indicates that 340 children were found begging over past four years. Kalaburagi recorded 123 cases, while Ballari had 77, Koppal 48, Bidar 47, Raichur 39, Yadgir 5, and Vijayanagar 1. The problem encompasses toddlers, minors, and children with disabilities who solicit alms in public spaces, often under the control of organised criminal networks. Shashidhar Kosambe of the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights attributes the situation to administrative shortcomings in law enforcement. Commission member Shekargouda G Ramatnal acknowledged the efforts of the District Child Protection Units (DCPU) in child rescue operations. "However, some factions view begging as a business, complicating efforts to eliminate it," he remarked. Records show a notable rise in child begging incidents from 2021-22 to 2024-25 in the region. Despite existing protective legislation, inadequate implementation and rehabilitation schemes impede sustainable solutions. Koppal district child rights protection officer Mahantaswamy Pujar highlights the issue of begging activities at religious sites, such as Hulagi, and suggests that local authorities conduct surveillance to facilitate departmental intervention. He notes the absence of a rehabilitation centre in Koppal, requiring transportation to Ballari. The 'Karnataka Prohibition of Begging Act-1975' constitutes the primary legislative tool for addressing begging and rehabilitation. Departmental officials indicate that while the social welfare department holds direct responsibility for implementing the act, it seems to focus more on hostels than on taking action regarding this issue. Section 12 of the act prohibits begging, carrying a maximum of three years' imprisonment. Authorities discourage giving alms to beggars accompanied by children and encourage reporting such instances to child welfare hotlines. The public can also report incidents via the social welfare department's helpline (94823 00400). The govt has also allocated Rs 306.2 crore from 2021-22 to 2023-24 for relief centres and committees, plus approximately Rs 10-15 crore for awareness campaigns. However, the official recognition of 340 children begging suggests that the effect of these measures was limited.
