Manipur: 328 firearms, 10,600 rounds seized as forces step up arms crackdown
The joint operation was carried out on Friday by the Manipur police, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), Indian Army, and Assam Rifles (AR). 'The operations were launched during the intervening night of June 13 and 14, 2025, based on specific intelligence inputs suggesting the presence of hidden weapons in these areas,' a statement issued by the Manipur Police on Saturday read.
According to the statement, the 328 firearms recovered in the operation include 151 self-loading rifles (SLRs), 65 INSAS rifles, 73 assorted rifles, 12 light machine guns (LMGs), 6 AK-series rifles, 5 carbine guns, 2 MP5 guns, 2 Amogh rifles, one AR-15 rifle, six pistols, two flare guns, one mortar, and two barrels.
Additionally, over 10,600 rounds of ammunition were seized. 'This included 3,534 SLR rounds, 2,186 INSAS rounds, 2,252 .303 rounds, 407 Amogh rounds, 234 AK rounds, and 20 rounds of 9mm ammunition. The operation also led to the recovery of 591 assorted magazines, 10 hand grenades, three lathodes, seven detonators, and three para rounds,' the statement read.
'The Manipur Police reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace and security and urged the public to cooperate by reporting any suspicious activities or illegal arms hoarding to the nearest police station or the Central Control Room. Security forces are expected to continue such operations in a focused and sustained manner to bring lasting normalcy to the region,' additional director general of police (ADGP) of Manipur Police Lhari Dorjee Lhatoo said.

This latest recovery, which is part of a broader crackdown by the authorities to curb the circulation of illegal arms in Manipur, comes amid ongoing tensions following the arrest of five Arambai Tengol volunteers, including a key leader, Asem Kanan, who was formally arrested by a central bureau of investigation (CBI) team on June 8 at Imphal's Bir Tikendrajit International Airport. The remaining four volunteers were released late Sunday night.
In response, the Meitei group Arambai Tengol called for a 10-day total shutdown in the state, which was suspended on June 10, coinciding with the visit of former chief minister N. Biren Singh and Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba to the national capital after being summoned by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on June 9.
Since the outbreak of violence on May 3, 2023, more than 6,000 weapons and lakhs of rounds of ammunition were looted from police armouries across the state.

After Ajay Kumar Bhalla was appointed Governor of Manipur, he issued an appeal on February 20, 2025, urging all communities to surrender looted and illegal arms within seven days.
On the final day of the ultimatum, February 27, Arambai Tengol surrendered 307 weapons. However, Kuki-Zo groups refused to comply with the Governor's directive, declaring that they would not relinquish their weapons until their demand for a separate administration was fulfilled.

In Kangpokpi district, a search in the forest near Phaikot village led to the recovery of five Pompis, one rifle, three IEDs, and three radio sets. It further added that, in Kakching district, security forces seized one INSAS rifle with magazine, two single-barrel bolt-action rifles, one modified 9mm pistol with magazine, one HE grenade without detonator, two tube launchers, three tear smoke shells, 62 live rounds of various calibres, two helmets, one iron bulletproof plate, and three bulletproof vests from Lairokching near Puksi Lairembi Temple. The officials further confirmed that in addition to the seizures, police arrested three active insurgent cadres. On August 13, Manipur Police arrested Sairem Saxena Meetei, 33, alias Athoiba, of Khurai Puthiba Leikai Arambam Leirak, an active cadre of UNLF (P), from Thangal Bazaar for allegedly threatening the public with a pistol. A pistol with two magazines and 21 rounds, a holster, a gun licence, a mobile phone, and a black side bag were recovered from him. On August 14, security forces apprehended Hidam Aboy Singh, 30, of Nongren Mayai Leikai, an active cadre of KCP (MFL), from Tairenpokpi Makha Leikai for alleged involvement in extortion and kidnapping for ransom. On August 13, police arrested another KCP (PWG) cadre, Thokchom Premjit Singh, 23, alias BOC, of Khumbong Laingam Khul, from his residence, recovering four demand letters, four money-receipt memos of the outfit, and a mobile phone. Three OGWs Arrested With Arms, Ammunition In North Kashmir's Handwara
Security forces arrested three overground workers (OGWs) who are, as per reports, affiliated with the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorist outfit during a search operation in the Wajhama village of Handwara, in north Kashmir's Kupwara district, police said on Wednesday. According to a senior police officer, a joint team of security forces launched a cordon and search operation in the area, during which three suspects were intercepted. Upon searching them, arms and ammunition were recovered from their possession. The recovered items include one pistol with a magazine, 20 rounds of AK rifle ammunition, and 20 offensive posters. All three individuals are residents of the Kupwara district. The trio has been taken into custody, and a case has been registered. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the extent of their involvement and any possible links with active militants in the region.

Freezing drug assets gets easy in Punjab as Centre tweaks rules
Drug peddlers in Punjab are set for a tough time as the Union government has streamlined the centralised online portal, making it easier for law enforcement officials to freeze properties under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, cutting the time from several months to just one week. Under the new process, an SHO or an investigating officer (IO), instead of a senior superintendent of police (SSP), can fill out the necessary paperwork and obtain orders for freezing of assets and properties within a week. The changes have been made after repeated requests from Punjab, with the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) flagging long delays in obtaining freezing orders. ANTF works as the agency that coordinates with the district police to get the properties of drug peddlers frozen. It is learnt that Punjab had raised the matter with the Centre, and the issue was also discussed at the northern zonal council meeting chaired by Union home minister Amit Shah. Though the portal has been in use for the past few years but the process of applying for the freezing of properties was difficult and time-consuming. The cases were submitted through the senior superintendent of police (SSP) offices, and sometimes it took as much as three to six months or even more to obtain orders. Moreover, after the case files of freezing properties were sent to the central revenue department, the investigating officers (IOs) had to appear physically before the revenue department's competent authority in Delhi, often multiple times. Now, the process has been made the process easier with the SHO or IO, in cases having the authority to complete formalities online and defend the freezing orders through video-conferencing. Under the new process, an SHO or an investigating officer (IO), instead of a senior superintendent of police (SSP), can fill out the necessary paperwork and obtain orders for freezing of assets and properties within a week. Properties amassed six years before the registration of a commercial quantity case under the NDPS Act come under this preview. If an IO thinks the assets have been amassed from the proceeds of drug money, the properties are attached under Section 68-F of the NDPS Act. Once the orders to freeze a property are issued, the revenue record is updated so that no one can sell or purchase it. Section 68-F of the NDPS Act authorises officers can trace and seize or freeze illegally acquired properties. After issuing notice to the affected person and reviewing records, the authority may forfeit the property. The burden of proving the property is legally acquired lies on the owner. Appeals go to the appellate tribunal for forfeited properties, while confiscated assets are handled as per the illegally acquired property (receipt, management, and disposal) rules. According to Punjab Police data, since April 2022, 1,122 properties worth ₹650 crore have been frozen. Out of these properties worth ₹133 crore were frozen in the past four months since the launch of 'Yudh Nashian Virudh' in March this year, according to information gathered from ANTF. Timeline reduced to one week Under the new system, after an IO submits freezing requests online through the portal, the competent authority will hear their plea via videoconferencing and issue orders within a week. According to a senior ANTF official, this streamlined mechanism will significantly speed up action against the assets linked to drug trafficking. 'Punjab was raising the issue of making the process simpler. The state has frozen the maximum number of properties. In the past year, our figures are more than what other states have done collectively,' said a senior Punjab Police functionary. Faster crackdown Freezing orders within one week.
