‘Mr. Loverman' Is a Rich, Stylish and Riveting Mini-Series

New York Times2 days ago

Lennie James recently won a BAFTA for his leading role in the mini-series 'Mr. Loverman,' and for good reason: His performance is as whole and mesmerizing a portrait as one sees on television.
'Loverman,' arriving Wednesday, on BritBox, is based on the novel by Bernardine Evaristo and follows Barrington Jedidiah Walker (James), an Antiguan native who has been living in London for decades. He is a self-described 'man of property, man of style,' a dapper dresser and a Shakespeare enthusiast, husband to a devout Christian woman, father to two adult daughters and grandfather to a teen boy.
He is also closeted. His long-term partner, Morris (Ariyon Bakare, who also won a BAFTA for his work here and is also fantastic), has been his best friend and lover since they met in Antigua as young men; he is Uncle Morris to Barry's children, a constant presence, a secret and not a secret, a betrayal but also a devotion.
But Barry balks at labels, and he says he isn't a homosexual but rather 'a Barry sexual.' Barry swears he is about to leave his wife, about to tell her the truth. But he has sworn that before.
The show weaves among the characters' perspectives, and long flashbacks depict the pivotal moments that carve each person's reality. We hear their internal monologues, though none sing quite as melodically as Barry's does.
'Loverman' is polished and literary, practically silky — sublime, even. It's natural to be baffled by other people's choices: Why would you do that? Why didn't you say anything? Why would you stay? Why would you leave? A lot of contemporary shows — even plenty of good ones — fall back on pat just-so stories for their characters' backgrounds, but the picture here is deeper and fuller than that. Fear and pain, love and loyalty: They're never just one thing.
There are eight half-hour episodes of 'Mr. Loverman.' I couldn't resist bingeing it, not because it's so propulsive, per se, but because it's so lovely.

New on Prime Video in June 2025 — all the new shows and movies to stream this month

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. A new month means many things, but in this specific instance, it means fresh Prime Video titles are coming our way. As of our latest update, Amazon has now released the streaming service's full June 2025 schedule. With that on hand, we've added the comprehensive list of everything coming our way this month below. You can also find our top picks for June below, too. One of them is "Deep Cover," a new London-set comedy crime caper starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom and Nick Mohammed. Plus, there's a new adaptation of "We Were Liars" to look forward to, and, in late June, Prime Video is treating us to a "Countdown," an explosive new crime thriller series. If none of our picks resonate with you, be sure to check out our round-ups of the best movies and shows on Prime Video for more recommendations. Otherwise, here's everything new to Prime Video in June 2025, including all the new TV shows, movies and live sport you can watch this month. "American Thunder: NASCAR to Le Mans" is a feature-length documentary that recounts NASCAR's 2023 endeavor to complete the centenary edition of the legendary endurance race with an American stock car. At the time, NASCAR CEO Jim France recruited NASCAR's franchise's most successful team to build, modify, and race the Chevrolet Camaro car in this grueling challenge. With the aid of world-class drivers Jenson Button, Jimmie Johnson and Mike Rockefeller, Hendrick Motorsports strove to turn the car into a vehicle capable of rising to the occasion. And in this new release, you can learn all about this story of innovation and determination on Prime Video. Stream "American Thunder: NASCAR to Le Mans" on Prime Video from June 12 If you're looking for some adrenaline-pumping entertainment, Prime Video's upcoming crime thriller "Countdown" has you covered. Created by Derek Haas (exec producer of the "One Chicago" and "FBI" franchises), "Countdown" is a new action-packed show that sees an undercover team enter a race against time to save the lives of millions living in Los Angeles. LAPD detective Mark Meachum ("Supernatural", "The Boys") is drafted into the secret task force after a Department of Homeland Security officer is murdered in broad daylight, and the hunt for the killer uncovers a far more sinister plot. Expect stunts, shoot-outs and more, and look forward to the series' three-episode premiere this June. Stream "Countdown" on Prime Video from June 25 "Deep Cover" is my most anticipated Prime Video release of the month, as the combination of an off-beat pitch (comedians go deep undercover) and the core cast involved makes for a winning combo. Tom Kingsley's upcoming comedy follows three improv comics — teacher Kat (Bryce Dallas Howard) and her students (Orlando Bloom and "Ted Lasso" star Nick Mohammed) — as they accept a dangerous mission from a London undercover cop (Sean Bean). Together, they're dispatched to infiltrate London's gangland, using their "skills" to impersonate dangerous criminals. Everything I've seen so far suggests it's gonna be a fun time, and I can't wait to see what's in store. Stream "Deep Cover" on Prime Video from June 12 "Head Over Heels" is a new Prime Video K-drama billed as a combination of "heart-fluttering romance with supernatural intrigue." The series revolves around Park Seong-A (Cho Yi-hyun), a high school student leading a double life: by day, she's a normal pupil, but by night, she's a powerful shamaness. Her life takes a surprising turn when she crosses paths with a handsome new transfer student, Bae Gyeon-U (Choo Young-woo), who suffers from an unlucky fate. Park Seong-A sees a vision that suggests his death is imminent, and, after falling head over heels for the new boy, she vows to save his life. Stream "Head Over Heels" on Prime Video from June 23 "We Were Liars" is an adaptation of E. Lockhart's bestselling YA novel of the same name that follows Cadence Sinclair Eastman (Emily Alyn Lind) and her inner circle, called the Liars. The Sinclairs are New England royalty, known for sharing an enviable bond, for good looks, and for their wealth. But after her life is changed by a mysterious accident, it seems that everyone Cadence knows, including her beloved Liars, has something to hide. Excited to see the book brought to life? Look forward to binge-watching "We Were Liars" in June, as all eight episodes are being dropped at once. Review: Culture collide in rom com musical Come Fall in Love

East definitely meets West in this new production, the latest show to premiere in Manchester, inspired by one of the most successful Bollywood movies of all time. If you have never seen or even heard of Dilwale Dulhania Le Joyenge (DDLJ to its legion of fans) it doesn't matter. Come Fall in Love follows a well trodden rom-com plotline with a few twists thrown in. Essentially uptight, ultra-organised Simran is off to Europe for a final break before she goes back to India for her arranged marriage having taken an instant dislike to wild party boy Rog at university. Ashley Day & Jena Pandya in Come In Love - The DDLJ Musical (Picture: Johan PerssonHe ends up on the trip, circumstances throw them together, they fall in love. But will true love shine through in spite of the cultural and social barriers in their way? What do you think? It's a trope that's been well used from Jane Austen onwards but some times the old 'uns remain the best. Read also: 'This show's so modern and so relevant - it's good medicine' says Ashley Day The show's got an impressive pedigree. It's directed by Aditya Chopra, the man behind the original film; the book and lyrics are by Nell Benjamin, a stage musical legend responsible for Mean Girls and Legally Blonde and the composers, Vishal and Sheykhar, are genuine icons of the Indian music scene. It's also been given the big build up and that can sometimes be a hindrance. I have to say I was expecting more in terms of spectacle and the show overall wasn't as 'big' as I'd hoped it might be. Some of the set pieces hint at what might have been. The ensemble give it everything and the dance routines had the audience whooping with delight. There are also some terrific performances. Irvine Iqbal and Harveen Mann-Neary as Simran's parents have real chemistry. He's the loving father struggling to come to terms with his 'little girl' growing up; she's his perfect foil with love and charm oozing out of every pore. Kara Lane & Kinshuk Sen in Come Fall In Love - The DDLJ Musical (Picture: Johan Persson)Karla Lane as Rog's ultra-posh, sexy mum Minky and Kinshuk Sen as Simran's 'intended' Kuljit make for the most unlikely double act but heir duet Hot and Independent and Hot is one of the highlights of the show. The first half of the show could do with tightening up. It basically sets the scene for the second half when the action moves to India and which is noticeably slicker and more engaging and is a full-on assault on the senses. Ashley Day as Rog also seems to come alive in the second act. He does sound like presenter and comedian Joel Dommett but when he sings, you can see why he's been in demand for musicals in the West End and New York. He's also some dancer, coping with the myriad of styles in the show with grace and ease. The spark of romance with Jena Panya as Simran could perhaps burn brighter and she has a difficult role. She's headstrong yet vulnerable, caught between two cultures - and she certainly resonated with a large number of the audience. And it's with the audience that the show is a real success. On press night it was a very different crowd than you would normally see. It was so good - and so important - to see a truly diverse audience at a mainstream show. The Company of Come Fall In Love - The DDLJ Musical (Picture: Johan Persson) There are some lovely messages within Come Fall in Love about family, selfless love and our need as humans to realise we're all connected. And seeing such a diverse cast on stage is also a major plus. Perhaps Come Fall in Love is just trying to tick too many boxes to be truly outstanding but it does make an important statement. Come Fall in Love runs until Saturday, June 21. Details from

Runaway dog clears 8-foot fence, runs 100 miles, is rescued in shipping harbor

It was around 6 a.m. when two men in a boat spotted what they thought was a seal struggling through the rough waters of a natural harbor in southern England. As their vessel drew closer, though, they realized it was a dog fighting against the current. 'I was absolutely gobsmacked,' said Gary Bennett, the captain of the 60-foot ferry, which transports oil workers to a nearby island. 'You don't see a dog swimming in the main shipping channels ever.'
