‘Mr. Loverman' Is a Rich, Stylish and Riveting Mini-Series

New York Times03-06-2025
Lennie James recently won a BAFTA for his leading role in the mini-series 'Mr. Loverman,' and for good reason: His performance is as whole and mesmerizing a portrait as one sees on television.
'Loverman,' arriving Wednesday, on BritBox, is based on the novel by Bernardine Evaristo and follows Barrington Jedidiah Walker (James), an Antiguan native who has been living in London for decades. He is a self-described 'man of property, man of style,' a dapper dresser and a Shakespeare enthusiast, husband to a devout Christian woman, father to two adult daughters and grandfather to a teen boy.
He is also closeted. His long-term partner, Morris (Ariyon Bakare, who also won a BAFTA for his work here and is also fantastic), has been his best friend and lover since they met in Antigua as young men; he is Uncle Morris to Barry's children, a constant presence, a secret and not a secret, a betrayal but also a devotion.
But Barry balks at labels, and he says he isn't a homosexual but rather 'a Barry sexual.' Barry swears he is about to leave his wife, about to tell her the truth. But he has sworn that before.
The show weaves among the characters' perspectives, and long flashbacks depict the pivotal moments that carve each person's reality. We hear their internal monologues, though none sing quite as melodically as Barry's does.
'Loverman' is polished and literary, practically silky — sublime, even. It's natural to be baffled by other people's choices: Why would you do that? Why didn't you say anything? Why would you stay? Why would you leave? A lot of contemporary shows — even plenty of good ones — fall back on pat just-so stories for their characters' backgrounds, but the picture here is deeper and fuller than that. Fear and pain, love and loyalty: They're never just one thing.
There are eight half-hour episodes of 'Mr. Loverman.' I couldn't resist bingeing it, not because it's so propulsive, per se, but because it's so lovely.

Mandy Moore's next TV project is a ‘This Is Us' reunion

Mandy Moore is reuniting with a member of her 'This Is Us' family for another television project. The Emmy-nominated actress is joining the cast of 'This Is Us' creator Dan Fogelman's upcoming Hulu series about the NFL. Moore, who played matriarch Rebecca Pearson on 'This Is Us,' is set to play Lauren, the daughter of William H. Macy's character, Hank. The project marks Moore's first major television role since 2023, when she played Benita Alexander in season 2 of 'Dr. Death.' Fogelman's new show is still untitled, but it also stars Law & Order: Special Victims Unit's Christopher Meloni as the head coach of an NFL team. Since 'This Is Us' came to an end in 2022, Fogelman has also teamed up with Sterling K. Brown, who played Randall Pearson on the family drama, for another television venture. Brown stars as Secret Service lead agent Xavier Collins in Fogelman's political thriller 'Paradise,' which has been renewed for a second season. 'What I love about Dan — he did the same thing with 'This Is Us' — he's like, 'I got six seasons in my head.' And for 'Paradise,' he has three seasons in his head,' Brown said during a June interview with Deadline. 'It's nice doing television with a beginning, middle, and end, because you're always building towards something. You're never just putting filler out there for the sake of filler.' READ MORE: Why people are calling episode 7 of 'Paradise' the best TV episode in years 'This Is Us' ran for six seasons on NBC from 2016 to 2022. The show centered on the Pearson siblings, Kevin (Justin Hartley), Kate (Chrissy Metz), and Randall (Brown), and their parents, Rebecca (Moore) and Jack (Milo Ventimiglia). The family's story was told across multiple timelines, with moments in the present as well as flashbacks to the siblings' childhood. Moore sang Fogelman's praises after she made her directorial debut on a season 6 episode of 'This Is Us' tiled 'The Hill.' 'I am eternally grateful to Dan Fogelman for changing my life in every way with #thisisus and in our final season, giving me the chance to helm a truly extraordinary episode of television written by the brilliant David Windsor, Casey Johnson and @chrissymetz,' she wrote via Instagram in December 2021. A premiere date has not yet been announced for Fogelman's new show starring Moore. 'This Is Us' and 'Paradise' are available to stream on Hulu. Our journalism needs your support. D-Day veteran celebrates 100th birthday at regimental museum

A D-Day veteran has celebrated his 100th birthday at the museum of his old regiment in Aberdeen after receiving his coveted message from the King. Jim Glennie turned 100 on Tuesday and a number of his family and friends gathered at The Gordon Highlanders Museum where he volunteers. Mr Glennie met the King earlier this year when he toured the Aberdeen museum, with Charles praising him as a 'great example to us all'. As an 18-year-old private, he was part of the invasion force which landed at Sword Beach on D-Day. He was later wounded in action and taken prisoner, spending the remainder of the war in Stalag IV-B. He and other soldiers made their own way back to Allied lines when their German guards deserted them as the Russians approached from the east. When Mr Glennie returned to Turriff in Aberdeenshire after the war, he became a welder. France has awarded him the Legion d'Honneur and earlier this year he was awarded the British Empire Medal in the King's Honours list. Friends and family gathered at the museum on Tuesday to celebrate, singing 'happy birthday' to the veteran. He was formally presented with his British Empire Medal by Aberdeen's Lord-Lieutenant, who is also the city's Lord Provost, David Cameron. The former soldier had earlier received his message from the King. John McLeish, chief executive of the The Gordon Highlanders Museum, said Mr Glennie was in good spirits. He told the PA news agency: 'Jim Glennie has volunteered at The Gordon Highlanders Museum for over 30 years. 'His military service is well documented but less well-known is the commitment and enthusiasm he brings to his volunteer role every Tuesday, week in week out. 'He is an important member of our team and, at the age of 100, his personality and generosity of spirit add to the wonderful camaraderie exhibited by team members. 'Watching Jim engaging with museum visitors is a sight to behold. He makes a regular museum visit very special indeed and, ultimately, he makes people smile! 'There were lots of smiles at the Museum today as we celebrated Jim's 100th birthday.' Charles toured the regimental museum in January, and upon seeing the King, Mr Glennie greeted him cheerfully and said 'long time no see!' The King told him about a portrait of Mr Glennie he had been shown at the museum, saying 'it looked terrific' and promising to send him a message when he turns 100 in August. The King said: 'You're a great example to us all, if I may say so, you really are.'
