The historic Soho coffee shop that makes the best negronis in London, according to cocktail experts
So where should you go in the city to find the best concoction of gin, Campari and vermouth? Time Out asked seven bar experts – including Tayer + Elementary 's Monica Berg, Carina Soto Velásquez from Hackney cocktail bar Equal Parts, and co-owner of Three Sheets Max Venning – to name the number one negroni in the capital.
According to the experts, London's best negroni can be found at Bar Italia, an Italian coffee shop with a super late licence in Soho. Kicking back with a negroni at this authentic caff is less about fancy ingredients or innovative twists, and more about soaking up the vibes.
'If you want a negroni like how you'd have it in Italy, go to a divey place like Bar Italia,' said Missy Flynn, cocktail expert and co-founder of the American-inspired Rita's in Soho.
'The negroni is so simple, the most important thing is to have the right ratio and enough dilution. Most simple Italian restaurants and cafés should make a good one.'
'Bar Italia is somewhere you can go after work. It's inexpensive, you can just stop in and have one outside. It's fun.'
Mixologist Mr Lyan also said some of the best negronis could be found at London's casual Italian eateries, particularly Bar Italia.
'The good thing about a negroni is it's fairly bulletproof,' he said. 'Bar Italia in Soho is ace for grabbing one, it feels really stripped back and you can enjoy the simplicity of what it is.'
Honourable mentions go to runners up Tayer + Elementary in Shoreditch and Bar Termini in Soho, which both received two nominations from our expert panel.
The tiny wood-panelled Soho spot Bar Termini was recommended by Monica Berg and Carina Soto Velásquez. As a negroni specialist, Termini is known for serving innovative twists on the classic drink. Be warned: these bevvies come strong, as they are served straight up in coupettes.
Both Gabriel Pryce from Rita's and Mr Lyan shouted our Old Street cocktail bar Tayer + Elementary for its unusual and 'genius' takes on the negroni, which include flavours like rhubarb and vetiver.
Also nominated for the best negroni in London was steak restaurant Hawksmoor for its cherry version of the tipple, chosen by Stephanie Randle-Solley from Exale Brewing. St John Smithfield was named the best place to sip the drink by Max Venning, and Swift 's Coral Anderson said the capital's best was found at Frank's, the French-styled bar underneath the St James's brasserie Maison François.

Thai Diner's little sister is all about chicken fingers
Just a few weeks ago, we got word from a little birdie (a.k.a. the internet) that the Thai Diner team was cooking up something special. Turns out, when they closed their beloved Uncle Boons Sister in 2020—a casual spin-off from their wildly successful restaurant, Uncle Boons, which also shuttered in the same year—they retained the keys to the space. All these years later, and the team is finally back at the 203 Mott Street. And the name of the game? Chicken fingers, baby. On Friday, August 8, the Thai Diner team debuted Mommy Pai's, a literal hop and a skip down the block from the favored Thai-American diner. Much like her other restaurants, for chef-partner Ann Redding, Mommy Pai's is a personal one. Her sister May Redding designed the branding of the restaurant (she also designed both Thai Diner and Uncle Boons), from the tropical-themed menus to the maximalist walk-up counter which mimics a traditional Thai wooden home blended with a roadside food stall. Together, the sisters pay a living tribute to their mother, Ampai, whose face you can catch plastered on the front door and smiling on menus with chicken tenders in hand. Speaking of, tenders are the name of the game. Using organic chicken as a base, you can order your gluten-free tenders fried or grilled in the style of satay, zhuzhed with your choice of Lemongrass, Muay Thai, Spicy and Coconut (which you can only get fried). There's also a vegan version, the Hat Yai Veggies, that comes with a flurry of greens—cauliflower, mushrooms, snake beans, purple sweet potato, baby bok choy and crispy shallots. You can make it a Mommy Combo ($20), which you should, as the meal comes with tenders plus a sauce and a side. Eight dipping sauces cycle through here, from the nicely spiced Phuket Island Sauce with galangal and green peppercorn to the garlic-flecked Sweet Chili Nam Jim. Sides come in the form of purple sticky rice with lettuce wraps, mommy cakes (aka silver dollar-sized coconut and scallion pancakes), rice and beans with a coconut creme to pour over and waffle fries. If you opt for the combo, you can add on a frozen drink (we liked the nicely spiced and tart Spicy Tamarind Thai Orange) for just $3 more. Order it "Thaphoon" style, and your slushie will receive a swirl of condensed milk soft serve. The menu rounds out with a few chicken and tofu sandwiches, cheekily named the Filet O'Tofu, and more sides that include Garlic Chive & Tapioca Dumplings, Curry Puff Mozzarella Sticks and chilled Green Curry Kanom Jim Noodles. But lest you leave without something a little sweet, the kitchen also has mini Taro Tapioca Donuts with pandan sangkaya custard for dipping and swirls of Thai tea and condensed milk soft serve by the cone or cup.

Behind an unassuming door on an unassuming West Village corner is Little Branch–a pioneer in the speakeasy-style revival. Much more than a subterranean bar with a theme, Little Branch is as much a trendsetter as it is a shrine to the origins of modern American bar and cocktail cultures. Stepping down into Little Branch feels like being let in on a well-kept secret, though, as you might surmise from the crowd, that secret is out. Nevertheless, the space itself is comfy with standing room and cozy booths and a small stage that hosts live jazz. The vibe is sultry and, in that anemoiac way, timeless. Subtle lighting and understated touches evoke the 1920s without veering into kitsch or parody. The cocktails here are, in a word, masterful. In keeping with its decor, the menu is populated by classics, so order one and you'll receive what is likely the best version one could possibly have of that thing, anywhere. If you're not into what's on offer, give the expert bartenders some prompts and they'll happily whip something up bespoke. Strict house rules are posted to keep riffraffery to a minimum, so observe them. No men in hats, so don't bring your dudebro who can't part his head from his Stetson or backward white baseball cap. No name-dropping, so check your star-fucker friend who doesn't realize that name-dropping is insufferable. And any persuasion of a woo-girl unwilling/unable to regulate their volume is welcome to drink elsewhere.
