Quartet of Iowa football key contributors earn Preseason All-American Honors
For Iowa, four of their stars are receiving notoriety as they find themselves among the Athlon Sports Preseason All-American teams entering this year.
Making their marks as second-team All-Americans per Athlon are center Logan Jones, punter Rhys Dakin, and kick/punt return star Kaden Wetjen. Gennings Dunker earned marks as a third-team selection.
The four individuals only exacerbate the success that Iowa expects to have among the offensive line and in special teams, two of their strengths annually.
Logan Jones and Gennings Dunker figure to be two of Iowa's key cogs up front, as they are experienced and leading the charge for an offensive attack entering its second year under offensive coordinator Tim Lester. After a 2024 season that saw Iowa blossom into a downhill running team, expectations are high in 2025.
On special teams, Iowa has a weapon in the return game with Kaden Wetjen. The Iowa native and junior college product had a kick and punt return touchdown last year while averaging 12.6 yards per punt return.
In the punting game, Rhys Dakin, the Aussie, averaged a booming 44.1 yards per punt with 29 of his punts landing inside the opponent's own 20-yard line.

Iowa football patiently awaiting injury return of key defensive cog
Iowa football is in the midst of its second week of fall camp. On Wednesday, Iowa head football coach Kirk Ferentz caught up with longtime Hawkeye play-by-play voice Gary Dolphin to update how camp is going. Ferentz revealed that Iowa's defensive depth up front has been tested early in camp. "Up front, Jeremiah Pittman's been out. Unfortunately he's coming off a knee repair, so he's still probably a week or two away from going, but it's given other guys an opportunity to get in there and work some. "Obviously, Aaron Graves on one side's pretty solid and then you've got guys like Will Hubert's really done a good job growing, developing. Bryce Hawthorne, young man from South Dakota State's really been impressive. Luke Gaffney. So, we'll have candidates. It's going to be interesting to see how it all develops and we'll get Jeremiah back at some point. I think at the end of the day, that group's going to be fine," Ferentz said. Pittman, a 6-foot-2, 285-pound graduate defensive lineman, was listed as one of Iowa's two starting defensive tackles to begin the spring opposite senior Aaron Graves. Pittman played in all 13 games last season, registering 17 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. The Palatine, Ill., product from St. Viator High School has notched 27 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, one pass breakup and one fumble recovery in his Hawkeye career thus far. Pittman has played in 26 games in his Iowa career and was a three-star signee per 247Sports in the 2021 class. Cole Tapper, crew repeat as champions of Governor's Cup regatta
The Governor's Cup international youth match racing championship has never had a three-time winner, but Australian skipper Cole Tapper did join a long list of two-time champions in defending his title on Sunday afternoon. Tapper is now the 14th skipper to win twice in the 58-year history of the regatta. Balboa Yacht Club's Argyle Campbell (1967-1968) and Andy Rose (1969-1970) were the original members of that club, each winning in back-to-back years like Tapper. Governor's Cup competitors may not have reached their 23rd birthday by the end of the event. At 22, Tapper will not have the opportunity to go for a third consecutive title. 'I think the team had to get pretty honest with ourselves at the start of this week that we probably weren't performing where we needed to be,' said Tapper, who flew to New York Sunday evening to compete in the Oakcliff International at Oyster Bay. 'We love coming here, and we put a lot into preparing, but we showed up and we were kind of off our game, to be honest. It took our coach, Jordan [Reece], to make us very accountable about what we were doing.' Neither championship came without its hiccups, or 'sea monsters,' as the commentating team of Tom Ehman and Rose like to call unforeseen events on the water. Tapper and his crew of Jack Frewin and Hamish Vass showed their mettle in a backdoor sweep of two-time champion Jeffrey Petersen (Balboa Yacht Club) in the 2024 final. The adversity in the most recent regatta came early, the defending champions struggling to find consistency during the double round robin. 'It's very nice because it gives you a lot of self belief,' Tapper said of returning with the same crew. 'You know that you can do it, so there was that. That, I think, got us through when we were not sailing so well at the start of this week. We were looking like we were going to come through fourth out of the round robins, and we managed to get into third. 'To have those troubles and then know, 'Hang on, we've done this before — we can do this,' it's really nice that we could lean on each other.' Alas, they finished strong with a pair of 3-1 series victories, against Josh Hyde, 21, of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron in the semifinals and over Justin Callahan, 22, of the Miami-based Biscayne Bay Yacht Club in the finals. The victors were serenaded with an enthusiastic chant of 'Aussie, Aussie, Aussie,' to which they replied, 'Oi, Oi, Oi,' as their boat was towed back into the harbor. A cannon was also fired. Callahan, who has aspirations of competing in the two-person dinghy events at the 2028 Olympics, had less experience in match racing, but he earned the right to choose his semifinal opponent as the top finisher in the double round robin with a record of 20-2. In the latter stages of the regatta, Callahan received a surprise when his twin brother, Mitchell, turned up. 'To see my brother there, that was quite the best surprise I could have ever asked for,' Callahan said. 'It put a smile on my face. Having him here the last few days really meant the world to me. I think this is one of the longest times I haven't seen him, so it was great having him here, supporting us. … Having a brother is truly special. We sailed this regatta together here two years ago, and we came in fourth.' Newport Harbor Yacht Club's Morgan Pinckney, 20, won the petit final, 2-0, over Hyde, placing third overall in the competition. Nebraska volleyball ranked No. 1 in AVCA preseason poll
The first poll of the 2025 collegiate volleyball season has been released, and the Cornhuskers are on top. Nebraska ranks No. 1 in the country in the AVCA/TARAFLEX Division I women's volleyball preseason poll. The Huskers received 40 of the 61 first-place votes while No. 2 Penn State had the other 21 votes. Pittsburgh ranks No. 3, with Louisville No. 4 and Texas rounding out the top five. The last time the Huskers were ranked as a preseason No. 1 was in 2022. Nebraska was last ranked No. 1 in the AVCA Poll on Nov. 27, 2023. Nebraska finished 33-3 last season, ending the year in the NCAA semifinals. Now, the team is entering a new era following the retirement of John Cook, with head coach Dani Busboom Kelly at the helm. For the Big Ten this season, the Huskers rank No. 1 in the preseason rankings. Three Nebraska volleyball players were named to an award watch list late last month. Andi Jackson, Harper Murray, and Bergen Reilly were named to the AVCA Player of the Year watch list. Nebraska will begin the 2025 season on Friday, August 22, when the Huskers host No. 3 Pittsburgh at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
