Defender Malick Thiaw closing in on Newcastle switch
Thiaw has made 85 appearances for the Serie A club, which he joined from Schalke in August 2022, one of them in a 0-0 Champions League draw with the Magpies at the San Siro in September 2023.

Should the deal go through, Thiaw will be head coach Eddie Howe's third senior recruit of a difficult summer following the £55million capture of Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga and a loan move for Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.
Thiaw's arrival would strengthen a central defensive pool which currently includes Sven Botman, Fabian Schar, Dan Burn and Jamaal Lascelles.
It would also provide a measure of respite for Howe, who is having to contend with the ongoing search for new recruits while dealing with the situation surrounding want-away striker Alexander Isak.
Newcastle open their Premier League campaign at Aston Villa on Saturday having won none of their pre-season fixtures and with their transfer mission far from complete.

Manchester United have reportedly made their opening offer for Brighton star Carlos Baleba, including one of their own players in their bid. Ruben Amorim has primarily focused on improving his attack in his first summer at Old Trafford, splashing around £200million on Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko. But that hasn't stopped United, who, according to The Standard, have made their first bid for Baleba, offering a transfer fee plus young midfielder Toby Collyer in part-exchange. That offer has been rejected, with Brighton holding out for a fee akin to the £115m Chelsea paid to sign Moises Caicedo two years ago, but United's interested has not lessened. Erik ten Hag handed Collyer his senior debut last season and he has since gone on to make 13 appearances for United. More Trending He has featured several times during United's pre-season but it is thought he could be loaned out for the upcoming campaign, with Championship side Sheffield Wednesday interested. Baleba meanwhile has missed Brighton's last three pre-season friendlies, leading to suggestion that the Cameroon international was being left out amid the transfer speculation. That is reportedly not the case however and instead he has been ruled out due to a knee injury and was watching on from the sidelines as his side played Wolfsburg behind-closed-doors last weekend. It remains to be seen whether Baleba will be fit to play in Brighton's opening game of the season against Fulham on Saturday, while United host Arsenal on Sunday. Gianluigi Donnarumma open to move away from PSG amid reported Man Utd interest
Manchester United have been linked in some reports with an interest in the 26-year-old, who is out of contract next summer. However, it is understood that up to this point there has been no contact from United to PSG regarding Donnarumma. Lucas Chevalier's arrival at PSG has been followed by Donnarumma being left out of their Super Cup squad (Joe Giddens/PA) The European champions completed the signing of Lucas Chevalier from Lille over the weekend, and Donnarumma has now been left out for the game against Spurs in Udine. Donnarumma was part of the Italy squad which won Euro 2020 by beating England in the final on penalties, and is still regarded as one of the world's top goalkeepers. He made over 200 appearances for AC Milan before joining PSG in 2021. He has won four Ligue 1 titles with the Parisiens and was part of the team which thrashed Inter Milan 5-0 to win last season's Champions League title.
