Faizan Zaki and His Coaches Address Shocking Flub Before Scripps National Spelling Bee Win: 'I Was Stunned'

Yahoo2 days ago

Faizan Zaki was already close to winning the Scripps National Spelling Bee competition on May 29 when he botched the spelling of a word
Despite his fumble, the 13-year-old student was able to secure the win
Now, he and his coaches are reflecting on that colorful momentFaizan Zaki and his coaches are sharing their perspective after the 13-year-old boy overcame a flub and ended up winning the 2025 Scripps National Spelling Bee.
'I was stunned, but still cautiously optimistic,' Scott Remer, one of the boy's coaches, told The New York Times of the nerve-racking moment during the final round. 'But that's why it's critical to ask questions and collect oneself before spelling.'
Zaki, who was last year's runner-up, was close to victory, with just two words to go, when he rushed into the spelling of 'commelina."
Instead of asking standard clarifying questions about the word's origin and definition — derived from New Latin, 'commelina' is the name for a genus of creeping, flowering herbs — he rushed into spelling, the Associated Press reported.
'K-A-M,' said Zaki, before pausing, the outlet reported. 'OK, let me do this. Oh, shoot!'
'Just ring the bell,' the teen then told judge Mary Brooks. As the rules of the competition go, that resulted in two spellers returning to the competition.
Fortunately, that didn't end up being the defining moment of Zaki's story as he ended up winning this year's competition during the 11th round of the finals with the word "éclaircissement." (The word means "a clearing up of something obscure," according to Merriam-Webster.)
While standing next to his hard-won trophy that night, Zaki said the memory of the flub wasn't likely to go away quickly.
'I'm definitely going to be having nightmares about that tonight,' he said, according to the AP.
The champion was avidly watched during the centennial competition, which included 243 students from across the U.S. and the globe.
Securing the win involved practicing almost 40 hours a week, Zaki during an appearance on Good Morning America.
At the end of his victorious final round, Zaki said he was so excited, he was breathless.
"Those last couple of letters, I was gasping for air," he said on the show. "I was like hyperventilating with excitement."

Zaki also explained his more casual approach to the spelling competition.
"I've been in this for seven years so at this point I'm not really that nervous," added the teen. "I'm definitely confident but not overconfident. I also have that casual style."

Monyetta Shaw-Carter's Birthday Hits Different – She's Celebrating Life & Love After A Stage 1 Breast Cancer Battle

Source: Paras Griffin / Getty Today (May 31) isn't just another birthday for Monyetta Shaw-Carter — it's a full-on rebirth. After battling stage 1 breast cancer, the Real Housewives of Atlanta star's special day hits different. She is turning 45 and celebrating with purpose, power, and a whole lot of pink. 'I caught the cancer early, and because of that, I will be here for my kids,' she told People . 'There's nothing more important than getting checked often and early to protect your future. Our health is irreplaceable.' Her diagnosis came after she felt an unusual sensation in her left breast last September. She didn't find a lump but told People she had a strange feeling that something was off. She listened. And that instinct saved her life. 'It was literally like my body was alerting me that something was wrong,' Monyetta said. 'It's so important for me to share this story because I hope to inspire others not to dismiss their gut feeling. Our body speaks to us, and when it does, we have to listen. It can be a matter of life or death.' One month after that self-check, a mammogram confirmed she had stage 1 invasive ductal carcinoma. She underwent a lumpectomy in January and completed 16 rounds of radiation by May 2. Now, weeks later, she's bringing her loved ones together for a joyful, pink-powered birthday bash. Her party honors life, resilience, and sisterhood. Monyetta credits her husband, Heath Carter, for being her rock through it all. She also had the support of her ex-fiancé, singer NE-YO, with whom she shares two children. 'NE-YO was just showing up for me in a major way and just always asking and making sure everything was okay,' she recalled in a recent interview. 'He was like, 'Oh, you're gonna beat this.'' Her RHOA circle also showed up with love. Kandi Burruss, Cynthia Bailey, Porsha Williams, Shamea Morton, and Shereé Whitfield all supported. For Monyetta Shaw-Carter, breast cancer is real but not unbeatable. So why not celebrate? As the founder of Keep It Classy Nails , a mother of four, and a businesswoman, she wants Black women everywhere to trust their instincts, take care of themselves, and live on their own terms. 'I'm stepping into this new chapter with deeper gratitude, unstoppable faith, and a whole new glow,' she wrote on Instagram. 'This birthday is more than candles and cake…it's a celebration of life, a reflection of pain & purpose, of healing, and God's grace. I've faced one of the biggest battles of my life… and I WON!!!' Miley Cyrus says getting older changed how she sees her parents

For Miley Cyrus, adulthood means seeing her parents not as her mom and dad, but as individuals outside their parent-child relationship. In an interview with The New York Times published on Saturday, the "Flowers" singer spoke about growing up in the public eye and as part of a famous Hollywood family. Rumors of a Cyrus family feud have swirled since her parents, Billy Ray Cyrus and Tish Cyrus-Purcell, finalized their divorce in 2022. When asked if she was still estranged from her father, she told the Times, "No. I think timing is everything." "As I've gotten older, I'm r especting my parents as individuals instead of as parents — because my mom's really loved my dad for her whole life, and I think being married to someone in the music industry and not being a part of it is obviously really hard," Cyrus said. Her parents were married for almost 30 years before they officially called it quits. They previously filed for divorce in 2010 and 2013, but reconciled both times. Her mother married "Prison Break" star Dominic Purcell in 2023. Her father married Australian singer, Firerose, in 2024, but they divorced just seven months later. Since April, he has been in a relationship with Elizabeth Hurley. Cyrus says she's made peace with the fact that her parents have moved on to having relationships with other people. "But now that my mom is so in love with my stepdad, who I completely adore, and now that my dad, I see him finding happiness, too — I can love them both as individuals instead of as a parental pairing," she said. "I'm being an adult about it. At first it's hard, because the little kid in you reacts before the adult in you can go, 'Yes, that's your dad, but that's just another person that deserves to be in his bliss and to be happy.' My child self has caught up," Cyrus added. In the interview, the " Hannah Montana" star also spoke about learning to rely less on her mother. Instead, she now imagines what her mom would do in uncomfortable situations and tries to mirror it. "And now I just go, 'What was it about her that made everything better?' It was safety, because I knew any situation that I didn't feel safe in, my mom would get me out of it or make it better. And so now I just imagine what soothed me about her, and then I do it for myself," she said. Cyrus isn't the only celebrity who has spoken about navigating the changing parent-child relations in their lives. In a 2024 appearance on "Today with Hoda and Jenna," Molly Shannon said parents should see their teens as "regular people" and have more empathy. "Most of the time, they just want to be heard. I try to think of that," Shannon said. A representative for Cyrus did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent by Business Insider outside regular hours.
