Drivers face motorway lane changes as roadworks continue

BBC News05-05-2025

Motorists are being reminded to be aware of lane changes while driving through roadworks on the M27 in Hampshire. Lanes three and four between Junction 5, near Stoneham, and Junction 7, near Hedge End, were set to undergo resurfacing work from 06:00 BST until Thursday. With works now complete eastbound, workers will transfer to the westbound carriageway to get ready to install a new road surface and improved drainage and safety barriers.Richard Scrase, programme delivery manager for National Highways, said: "I would urge motorists to allow more time for their journey on this section of the M27."
Mr Scrase said those travelling westbound should make sure they stay left if they want to exit the motorway at Junctions 8, 7 and 5, or Junction 4 for the M3."Otherwise, if you're driving in the contraflow lane you will need to stay on the M27 until Junction 3 and turn back if you have missed your exit," he said. "We understand the inconvenience our work may cause but it will result in a smoother ride for drivers, make the road quieter, improve safety and ensure the road lasts for many years to come."

Donald Trump calls Elon Musk 'man who has lost his mind' and won't talk to him'

President Donald Trump has dubbed his former pal Elon Musk as a man who 'lost his mind' and is refusing to speak with him. Trump on Friday morning reportedly seemed rather uninterested in the fiery verbal feud with Musk that blew up just hours earlier. Asked if he had a call with Musk set for later in the day, Trump just before 7am said: 'You mean the man who has lost his mind?' Trump told ABC News that he was 'not particularly' keen on speaking at the moment with Musk, who used his X (formerly Twitter) platform to engage in a real time war of words on Thursday. The president said that Musk wants to speak with him, but said he is not ready to do so. A Trump adviser who was with him on Thursday night said that he appeared more 'bummed' about the breakup with Musk that angry, according to the news outlet. The feud exploded when the president suggested in a press conference that Musk has 'Trump derangement syndrome' and claimed that the Tesla CEO opposes his 'One, Big, Beautiful Bill' because it cuts consumer tax credits for electric vehicles. Trump and his former Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) chief sparred for hours and the feud escalated to an unbelievable level. By Friday, it had quieted down considerably. More Trending While Trump's opponents rejoiced in the seeming end to the bromance, many of his supporters hoped that they would reconcile, sooner rather than later. Musk's father, Errol Musk, said he urged his son to put an end to the fight. 'I haven't spoken to him, but I did send him a message, you know, telling him to make sure this fizzles out,' he told Al Arabiya English from Delhi Airport. 'Trump, of course, will prevail, because he is has been voted in by the majority of the people in America.' Hull A63 city centre roadworks on track after delay announced

Highways officials say they are "very confident" a major roadworks scheme in Hull city centre will open next December, National Highways announced the A63 Castle Street project had been delayed by a year due to "extremely challenging ground conditions".Work had originally been due to be completed by spring manager Frances Oliver apologised for the delays, but said the scheme was on track to be completed by the revised date. Ms Oliver said: "It's a really technical scheme and there are lots of different elements."There is really large element of technical design to overcome the ground conditions and, as part of that, we've had to do some slight tweaks to the design," she said."We are really disappointed and we apologise for the delays - we all want to get this scheme finished." In response to a question about congestion, she said they had made some tweaks to traffic control measures as a result of customer feedback and were working with the city council to monitor the the majority of the time, she said there were two lanes of traffic running in each direction, with speed restrictions in place. At the scene - BBC Look North presenter Peter LevyThe A63 Castle Street project has come a long way since construction work started in I visited the site in September, all seemed to be going well, with National Highways telling me the project would be finished by spring this since it was announced in December that it would be delayed by a year I have been swamped with messages from people frustrated at having to sit in traffic jams every bosses cited extremely challenging ground conditions near the Humber as the reason for the delay, but this is of little comfort to the thousands of motorists who use the local road network every be fair, it is a monumental project, and one which should make a huge difference to traffic flow in the city when it finally gets over the finish line.
