Spy Kids fans shocked to learn the REAL age of iconic actress from film

Daily Mail03-07-2025
It's been 24 years since Spy Kids was released but it's still surprising fans - with some just now realizing that one actress was only in her 20s when she was playing a mom to pre-teens.
Carla Gugino, now 53, played Ingrid Cortez, a retired Office of Strategic Services agent turned consultant worker, and mother to kids Juni and Carmen (played Daryl Sabara and Alexa Vega) in the film.
While Ingrid's age isn't revealed in the movie, her children are aged nine and 11, and Antonio Banderas, who played her husband, was 38.
However, Carla herself was only 27 when she was cast in the film.
'So what's crazy is that when I played Ingrid Cortez in Spy Kids, I was 27 years old, isn't that bananas,' the Sin City star said in amazement in a recent interview with B&C.
'I should have been 10 years older for that part, we've made everybody believe it,' she quipped.
Carla added it's been 'incredible' to see longevity of the film, which expanded into a multi-film franchise.
'But it's been incredible to see generation after generation just love that movie - there's something timeless about it, and I love it cause the kids get to be the heroes,' she said passionately.
The actress added: 'The parents are cool, they're not like the sort of fuddy-duddy [old school] - there's something very innovative about it and I think here's something very timeless about it which is super cool.'
But Carla may have been a bit too 'cool,' with shocked fans of the movie in disbelief that she was so young in the role.
'27???? I'm older than Ingrid Cortez???' a surprised user wrote.
'Wait I'm now older than she was when she filmed it?' another incredulous fan chimed in.
'She looked older than 27 tho lol, worked well,' observed someone else.
'Damn I thought she was 35 in Spy Kids, I think it was just the hair that made her look older,' commented
The original three Spy Kids films that also included the sequels Spy Kids 2: The Island Of Lost Dreams (2002) and Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over (2003).
Written and directed by Robert Rodriguez, the first of the spy action comedy films became a big hit with both critics and fans, grossing $147.9 million surpassing their budget of $35 million.
While Ingrid's age isn't revealed in the movie, her children (played by Daryl Sabara and Alexa Vega) are aged nine and 11, and Antonio Banderas, who played her husband, was 38
The success helped it earn the distinction of being among the top 20 highest-grossing films of 2001.
The cast also featured the likes of Danny Trejo, Alan Cumming, George Clooney, Teri Hatcher, Cheech Marin, Robert Patrick and Tony Shalhoub.
The core cast also starred together in Spy Kids 2: The Island Of Lost Dreams (2002), which was another box office hit raking in $119.7 million while working from a $38 million budget.
The last of the trilogy, Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over (2003), earned even more than the first two, grossing $197 million while spending $38 million on the production.
Spy Kids also saw some Hollywood stars make appearances in All the Time in the World (2011) with Jessica Alba, Joel McHale, Rowan Blanchard, Mason Cook, Ricky Gervais and Jeremy Piven joining.
Ultimately, the filmmaker rebooted the family-friendly action series entirely with last year's Netflix movie Spy Kids: Armageddon, this time co-starring Gina Rodriguez and Zachary Levi as super spy parents.

Woke writer slammed for branding Sydney Sweeney 'a butterface who looks great in jeans'

A prominent progressive political scientist has been met with outrage after calling actress Sydney Sweeney ugly. 'She's a butterface who looks great in jeans,' Rachel Bitecofer, 48, wrote Monday in a post responding to Sweeney's controversial American Eagle ad. 'You sound jealous,' a user replied. 'Yer [sic] jealous. Clearly,' another said, in a torrent of more than 2,000 posts that almost all panned Bitecofer, a former lecturer at Christopher Newport University. Most questioned how she came to such a conclusion. The term 'butterface' is an insulting British slang word derived for a person who has a good body but unattractive face. Sweeney, at 27, has surfaced as a sex symbol as of late. At the same time, an American Eagle tagline in her ad - 'Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans' - didn't sit well with left-leaning audiences. Some left-wingers have claimed that the ad's deliberate word play on the word 'genes' is racist. 'She's a butterface who looks great in jeans,' Rachel Bitecofer, 48, wrote Monday in a post responding to Sweeney's controversial American Eagle ad Bitecofer went on to say that 'no-one on the left' is concerned with the Sweeney advert and that it was 'all rage porn' on right-wing social media. She did so despite a slew of news stories and opinion pieces on the advert published in The New York Times, CNN, NPR and NBC News. Sweeney's new fans include President Trump, after it was revealed the Euphoria actress is a registered Republican in her home state of Florida. 'She's a registered Republican?' the president said with interest on the tarmac of the Lehigh Valley International Airport outside of Allentown, Pennsylvania, on his way back to Washington after spending the weekend in Bedminster, New Jersey. 'You'd be surprised at how many people are Republican,' he added, after expressing surprise himself over the development. That's one I wouldn't have known, but I'm glad you told me that,' he said, before hailing her ad as 'fantastic.' The backlash to the political commentator's 'butterface' declaration was swift and merciless Bitecofer - the author of Politicize Everything: A Blueprint for a Party That Fights - appeared to view the backlash as a distractions that's being propped up by Republicans American Eagle has shrugged off controversy over the Sweeney advert and insists its company is an inclusive one. In a statement posted on American Eagle's Instagram account on Friday, the retailer said the ad campaign 'is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story. 'We'll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone,' it concluded. Sweeney, meanwhile, is a member of the Republican Party of Florida, according to public voter records viewed by the Daily Mail. The campaign in question launched last week. It remains unclear if the company knew how much controversy the ad was going to generate.

Jennifer Aniston's new man sparks concern as he's seen hobbling on a date with her A-list pals

Jennifer Aniston 's new hypnotist hunk boyfriend Jim Curtis was seen with cane in hand as he limped on date with the A-lister. The 49-year-old guru was seen hobbling as he arrived for a night on the town in the West Village neighborhood of New York City with his 56-year-old ladylove on Monday. The two - who revealed their romance last month - enjoyed a double date with Jennifer's close pal Jason Bateman, 56, and his longtime wife Amanda Anka, also 56, for their second public outing together. Jim - who has been open about his struggle with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and past fight with severe nerve pain - looked visibly strained as he used a cane while gingerly walking into the hotel after a three-hour dinner. No doubt the two still want to keep their relationship under wraps as they left through different doors in the hotel despite using the same car. The former star of Friends looked stylish for the night out as she sported a white maxi dress with sandals. Jennifer - who was previously married to Brad Pitt from 2000 until 2005, and then Theroux from 2011 until 2017 - sparked romance rumors after she was spotted with the life coach on vacation in Mallorca, Spain, during Fourth of July weekend. 'She's dating Jim and is very happy, but she's still taking things slowly,' a source previously told They adding that Jen 'feels very connected to Jim, as they have the same level of emotional intelligence, unlike some of her previous suitors.' Before that Aniston appeared to be dropping hints about the new man in her life. On July 14, she took to Instagram Stories with a pair of cryptic posts that had fans reading between the lines. First, the Friends alum reposted a tweet that read: 'The Friends theme song was right, no one told us life was gonna be this way' - seemingly referencing an unexpected new chapter in her life. Then came the real eyebrow-raiser: a quote from 'mindfulness expert' Case Kenny that read, 'People who still radiate love in a world that has shown them its darkest sides, please never change.' Fans immediately began theorizing that the message was about Curtis, who's known for his uplifting, love-centric philosophy. The 49-year-old guru was seen hobbling as he arrived for a night on the town in the West Village neighborhood of New York City with his ladylove on Monday No doubt the two still want to keep their relationship under wraps as they left through different doors in the hotel despite using the same car The former star of Friends looked stylish for the night out as she sported a white maxi dress with sandals Curtis regularly posts inspirational quotes and 'manifestations' to help people 'break free from their past and patterns' to find love - and Aniston has been following him on the social media platform for almost two years. Meanwhile, Jen's Instagram clues came hot on the heels of Curtis expressing how meaningful their Mallorca getaway had been. 'I am back from vacation and what an experience!' he wrote in his newsletter, according to Page Six. 'When I was sick, sad, stuck and in pain I never thought I would have the abundance, joy and love I now experience on a daily basis. 'I just took one step, made one decision and the next followed — now I look back and realize, oh! That course, that life change, that pain, resulted in this magic.' Jim added: 'The same life that brings struggle also brings opportunity. The possibility of something better — more aligned, more free, more meaningful — is always here.' Curtis has had his own share of life-changing challenges. Beginning in the summer of 1995, right after his freshman year at the University of New Hampshire, when he was hit with severe nerve pain that would stay with him for years. An MRI later revealed lesions on his spinal cord, a diagnosis that pushed Curtis to pivot from his 'frat guy athlete' persona and explore a different path focused on healing and personal transformation. He credits a university professor for setting that new course into motion. 'He taught me to meditate and introduced me to the idea of mindfulness: focusing on just being present,' Curtis shared in a 2017 interview. Curtis was previously married to Rachel Napolitano, though their relationship reportedly ended not long after she gave birth to their son, Aidan, who is now a teenager. Aniston, of course, has had her own romantic history in the spotlight. She was famously married to Brad Pitt from 2000 to 2005 before their headline-making split when Pitt began a relationship with Angelina Jolie while filming Mr. & Mrs. Smith. She later tied the knot with actor and writer Justin Theroux in 2015, but the marriage ended in divorce three years later. In a 2022 interview, Aniston opened up for the first time about her private struggle to have children — and the emotional toll it took. 'It was a challenging road for me, the baby-making road,' she admitted. 'All the years and years and years of speculation... It was really hard. 'I was going through IVF, drinking Chinese teas, you name it. I was throwing everything at it,' she added. ' 'I would've given anything if someone had said to me, 'Freeze your eggs. Do yourself a favor.' You just don't think it. So here I am today. The ship has sailed.'

NFL rookie eyes up $12.5million Las Vegas mansion... before even playing his first game

NFL rookie Ashton Jeanty may not have suited up for the Las Vegas Raiders yet but that hasn't stopped him from shopping for a stunning property in the area. The highly-rated running back is gearing up for his first season in the NFL after being selected by the Raiders as the sixth pick in the 2025 draft. The 21-year-old signed a four-year deal worth $35.9 million with the franchise - which included a stunning signing bonus worth just under $22.75 million. Evidently, Jeanty is already looking to splash some of that cash and was seen eyeing up a beautiful $12.5million Las Vegas mansion in a video posted by Overtime SZN. The Raiders rookie was seen - alongside realtor Michele Sullivan in Nevada - touring the stunning property which features 'real platinum and gold' throughout. The video showed Jeanty being shown around and even discussed where he would place his Rookie of the Year trophy, should he win the accolade this season. The 21-year-old is eyeing up his first lucrative purchase in the form of a $12.5m mansion Pointing to a specific cabinet inside of one walk-in wardrobe, he said: 'If I were to win, I'd put it in this one right here'. Jeanty continued the tour and was shown the impressive games room, which boasted a view of the Vegas strip, along with a pool table and darts board. The Raiders rookie then toured the outside of the property and came across the stunning swimming pool located in the garden. Reflecting on it, he said: 'One of the things I always said, whenever I get a little bag and get a nice house, I'm going to use every single thing in it. I'm going to make the most of my house.' Jeanty ended his viewing by admitting that the property might be slightly out of his budget - but had helped motivate him to reach that level of status and wealth. He said: 'I've always dreamed of playing in the league and buying a big house. To be here, looking round, it gives me motivation. 'I don't know if these are in my price range right now! But one day, potentially, I could be here'. The Raiders are currently in the middle of their training camp, as they step up preparations for the upcoming NFL season. There's plenty of expectations for Jeanty after his impressive displays for Boise State saw him come runner-up in the Heisman Trophy last year. According to Sports Illustrated reporter Albert Breer, Jeanty has already impressed Raiders coaching staff during the training camp. Breer said, 'Ashton Jeanty has come as advertised. All the obvious stuff to all the coaches and scouts who evaluated him is the contact balance and the ability to hide behind his linemen as a shorter, more compact player. 'And get past defenders before they could even see him. He can take a 10-yard run and turn it into a 50-yard run. All that stuff is there. 'What's been a little surprising to coaches is how quickly he's adjusted in the passing game. Pass pro can prevent young players at that position from getting on the field early in their careers. 'And it's something that Ashton Jeanty, as a college player, like a lot of great backs, didn't do a ton of in college, but he's taken to it right away.'
