Paris FC secures return to Ligue 1

Paris FC will be back in action in the French top flight next season following an absence of 46 years after they secured promotion to Ligue 1 on Friday following a 1-1 draw at Martigues.
The result guaranteed them a top two finish in Ligue 2, with leaders Lorient also having secured promotion.
Paris FC will join champions Paris St Germain in Ligue 1, the first time in 35 years that two clubs from the French capital will compete in the top flight in the same season.
Paris FC were recently acquired by the family of French billionaire Bernard Arnault, who have said they aim to lift the club to be among the elite of French and European football.
The club earlier announced that next season they will move their home ground from Charlety stadium to Stade Jean-Bouin, which sits just across the street from PSG's home, the Parc des Princes.
Paris has not had two clubs in the top division since Racing Paris 1 (formerly Matra Racing) were relegated in 1990. REUTERS

Players from the top-flight North American league were expected to compete at the 2022 Beijing Games but NHL executives elected not to send players weeks before the Olympics began due to schedule disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The National Hockey League said it would release its talent this time around, clearing the way for the sport's biggest stars to take the Olympic stage. Matthews, the most prolific scorer in the league since joining in 2016, will ditch his Toronto Maple Leafs blue for the stars and stripes, while Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk will play alongside brother Matthew Tkachuk, whose Florida Panthers are one win away from a second straight Stanley Cup. The Vancouver Canucks captain and ruthless defenceman Quinn Hughes was also named to the U.S. first six, along with the Boston Bruins' Charlie McAvoy and the Vegas Golden Knights' Jack Eichel. "We've seen the unprecedented success of our U.S. teams on the international stage this past season and we need to keep our foot on the gas," the U.S. Olympic men's team general manager Bill Guerin said in a statement. "The players we've named today represent excellence. They're committed to the mission in front of us and excited about the opportunity to represent our country in the Olympics." Frech stuns sixth-seed Andreeva, lucky loser Jabeur powers through

The 18-year-old sixth seed looked to be cruising to victory when she bagged the first set with an audacious backhand slice dropshot on her fourth set point against Frech. The world number 25, however, was far from finished, breaking at the start of the second set with Andreeva losing her calm and hitting a ball high out of the court. With Andreeva's composure rapidly eroding and her unforced error count shooting up, Frech levelled when the Russian teenager's slice forehand sailed long. The Pole then powered past Andreeva with a bagel in the third, sealing her win when Andreeva sent another forehand wide. It is the first time Andreeva has lost a deciding set with a 6-0 scoreline in her professional career, and it was Frech's second top ten win of her career. Lucky loser Ons Jabeur, beaten on Sunday in the last qualifying round, made the most of her unexpected chance with a 7-6 6-1 win over American Caroline Dolehide. Jabeur, a two-time Wimbledon finalist, looked comfortable on grass ahead of the season's third Grand Slam in London starting on June 30.
