Monsoon Shield: NMC distributes safety kits to sanitation workers
Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) launched a city-wide drive to equip its sanitation workers — known as 'Swachhta Doots' — with essential safety gear ahead of monsoon.
Often working in hazardous and unsanitary conditions, these frontline workers are now receiving protective kits aimed at safeguarding their health during the rainy season.
Acting on the directives of municipal commissioner and administrator Abhijeet Chaudhari, and under the guidance of additional commissioner Vasumana Pant, the initiative is being implemented across all 10 zones of the city. The drive is being supervised by deputy commissioner Rajesh Bhagat and chief sanitation officer Dr Gajendra Mahalle, with special funds allocated for the effort.
The kits include masks, rubber and cloth hand gloves, high-visibility jackets, and gumboots — each tailored to tackle monsoon-specific challenges like waterlogging, slippery surfaces, and increased exposure to disease-causing pathogens. Distribution is being carried out in a phased, zone-wise manner, covering not only the core zones but also high-risk areas like the Bhandewadi dumping yard, nallah cleaning units, shelter homes, and the municipal slaughterhouse.
Laxmi Nagar, Hanuman Nagar, Dhantoli, Sataranjipura, Ashi Nagar, and Mangalwari each received 1,280 masks, while zones like Dharampeth, Gandhibagh, and Lakadganj were given 640 each. Additional supplies were sent to Nehru Nagar, NMC headquarters, and field sanitation workers. Thousands of gloves were also distributed, with Nehru Nagar, Laxmi Nagar, and Sataranjipura receiving over 2,000 pairs each. Safety jackets were dispatched in batches ranging from 100 to 400 per zone, and gumboots were prioritised for areas prone to flooding and waste exposure.
Sanitation workers, often invisible yet indispensable to the city's hygiene system, face increased health hazards during the monsoon. NMC's gesture is being seen as both a practical intervention and a symbolic recognition of their vital role. One worker remarked, "We are used to working without expecting much. But receiving these items before the rains gives us the feeling that someone is thinking about our safety too.
It matters."
By prioritising the well-being of its sanitation force, the NMC not only ensured preparedness for monsoon-related challenges but also underlined the value of those who work tirelessly to keep Nagpur clean.

PG medical student arrested for hoax bomb threat to skip seminar in Mangaluru
MANGALURU: The Mangaluru City police arrested a postgraduate medical student for making a hoax bomb threat to a private hospital under Ullal Police Station limits. The accused has been identified as Dr Chalasani Monica Choudary. City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy CH stated that the preliminary investigation revealed the accused was scheduled to present a seminar on the day of the incident. In an attempt to avoid the presentation, she allegedly made a hoax call to the hospital. The incident occurred on June 4 at around 8.45 am when the hospital received a threatening call claiming a bomb was planted on the premises and instructing that the hospital be evacuated by 11 am. The hospital reportedly received at least five such calls. Following the alert, around 25 to 30 police personnel, including members of the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) and dog squad, rushed to the spot and thoroughly searched the hospital, its parking facility, and surrounding areas. However, no explosive device was found. The hoax created panic among doctors, staff, and patients. This fake cardiologist performed 50-plus heart surgeries at Faridabad hospital in 7 months
Faridabad: An MBBS doctor masquerading as a cardiologist performed more than 50 heart procedures over seven months before his fraudulent practice was discovered. Though a qualified doctor, Pankaj Mohan Sharma put countless lives at risk at a heartcare centre in Badshah Khan civil hospital because he was not authorised to perform critical cardiac surgeries. Dr Sharma came under cops' scanner when Sanjay Gupta — a lawyer and social activist — lodged a complaint at NIT Faridabad police station on April 11, quoting sources to allege he bagged additional degrees based on forged documents. Preliminary probe revealed that the accused had been operating under a stolen identity, misappropriating national medical commission's registration number assigned to Dr Pankaj Mohan, a legitimate cardiologist practising in the city. Police said Dr Sharma was hired in July last year by Mediterina Hospital, which runs the heartcare centre at Badshah Khan on a public-private partnership mode. "The hospital management continued to employ an unqualified and fraudulent doctor who lacks any degree or recognised specialisation in cardiology. Dr Sharma falsely claimed qualifications of MD and DNB (cardiology), which are entirely fraudulent," said lawyer Gupta. After coming to know about the fraud, Dr Mohan lodged a complaint with IMA in Jan this year, alleging illegal use of his credentials by the other doctor. He also slapped a legal notice on Dr Sharma. What raised eyebrows was that Dr Sharma suddenly stopped attending the centre in Feb after being asked to produce his medical degree. "Many patients began enquiring about him and eventually visited the real Dr Pankaj Mohan. When Dr Mohan clarified that he had never worked at the heart centre, the allegations strengthened," said a doctor at Badshah Khan. Adding another layer to the deception, Dr Sharma maintained a Facebook profile under the name 'Kshitiz Mohan' and was listed as the director of a film production firm, raising more questions on his medical credentials. Dr M Pratap Kumar, CMD of Mediterina Hospital who also heads the heart centre at Badshah Khan, confirmed that Dr Sharma had been removed. "He applied through formal HR channels as a general physician. We always had suspicion about his DM (cardiology) degree and acted on it," he said. "We have sought details related to the doctor from the CMO. We want to know how he was recruited as he served in the civil hospital for months. We are, however, yet to get any record. Only after we have all the details, we will initiate legal action," said Yashpal, a spokesperson for police.
