Three teachers dead, two injured in horror crash in Eastern Cape

Three female teachers have been killed, and two others severely injured, in a collision in the Eastern Cape.
The crash involving a bakkie occurred on a rural road near Canzibe Hospital in Ngqeleni, OR Tambo District on Tuesday.
Eastern Cape Transport Department spokesperson Unathi Binqose stated that the two injured individuals were transported to a hospital in Mthatha.
Accident
Binqose said the identities of the teachers are currently unknown.
'It is alleged that the bakkie, used as a staff transport, lost a tyre, the driver lost control, and the vehicle veered off the road, killing the three people on impact.
'It is believed that the vehicle was used as a staff transport by teachers from a nearby school. Teachers, all females, have died while two others, including the driver, also female, were critically injured from an accident involving a bakkie in Ngqeleni, OR Tambo District – Eastern Cape,' Binqose said.
Binqose said a case of culpable homicide has been opened for further investigation.
'Our primary responsibility at this stage is to save as many lives as possible,' Binqose said.

Massive crash
Last month, at least 15 people died, and five others sustained injuries in a head-on collision involving a fully loaded minibus taxi and a bakkie in the Eastern Cape.
The accident occurred on the R63 road between Adelaide and Maqoma (Fort Beaufort) at about midnight on Saturday.
Binqose said the cause of the accident is being investigated.
'It is alleged that a white Quantum, travelling from Qonce (King Williams Town) to Cape Town, collided head-on with an Isuzu double cab that was travelling from Adelaide to KwaMaqoma. The driver of the double-cab died on the scene, and 13 passengers in the Quantum were also declared dead on the scene, including the driver.
'Six injured occupants of the Quantum were rushed to Provincial Hospital for treatment, one of them later succumbed to injuries on arrival at the hospital, taking the number of deceased to 15,' Binqose said.

Church service turns into nightmare as armed robbers kidnap worshippers
The armed robbers stole three vehicles from the church congregants - a Mercedes Benz, a Volkswagen Polo and an Isuzu KB. Police have since recovered all the three stolen vehicles in Mpumalanga and Gauteng Image: SAPS A church service in Klipfontein, Witbank, was violently interrupted on Wednesday evening when a group of armed suspects stormed the premises, robbing and kidnapping nine congregants, including the pastor. Two suspects have since been arrested, and the victims have been safely recovered. 'According to a report, on this fateful day, a group of more than five armed males stormed into the church premises, threatening the congregants with firearms. About nine church members, including the pastor and church elders, were present at the time, and were ordered to lie down,' said Mpumalanga provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Donald Mdhluli. The victims were subsequently searched by the armed intruders, and tied with cable ties before being robbed of their mobile phones, wallets containing bank cards, laptops, as well as a computer screen belonging to the church. 'The suspects further demanded car keys and pin codes for the mobile phones that they took. The victims were also forced into three vehicles belonging to them (the victims). The suspects then drove off to a remote area in the bushes, where two of them remained to guard the victims while the others went away, only to return later and collected their two accomplices,' said Mdhluli. Family members of the victims later reported the incident to the authorities. 'The matter was escalated whereby a collaborative effort between the SAPS and Tracker Connect yielded significant results, as the vehicles were successfully traced (on Wednesday night), one near Vosman and the other in Silverton, Gauteng,' said Mdhluli. 'Thanks to the diligent work of Witbank detectives and Vosman Vispol, the law enforcement agencies managed to locate all victims in a bushy area in Kromdraai. One individual sustained minor injuries and was given medical treatment by the medical personnel.' In total, three vehicles were recovered: a Mercedes-Benz, which was found in Vosman in the possession of a 21-year-old suspect; a Volkswagen Polo, which was abandoned in Vosman; and an Isuzu KB bakkie, which was traced and recovered in Silverton, Gauteng. A 27-year-old man was arrested during the recovery of the Isuzu bakkie. 'The two suspects were arrested, with all the stolen vehicles recovered. The pursuit of the remaining suspects continues. Police urge anyone with information that may assist in apprehending these perpetrators to contact the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111 or send information via MySAPSApp,' said Mdhluli. 'All received information will be treated as confidential, and callers may opt to remain anonymous.' Meanwhile, acting provincial commissioner of police in Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, has applauded the effective collaboration between the police and private security. "We are concerned with the incidences of such crimes, especially in places that should be sanctuaries for individuals seeking solace,' said Mkhwanazi. Explosives unit called in after Pietermaritzburg cash-in-transit heist
A specialist explosives unit was last night sweeping the scene of a cash-in-transit (CIT) heist near Bisley Nature Reserve in Pietermaritzburg, amid concerns that a live explosive device may still be present. The Witness reports that Murray Road, leading to the nature reserve, was cordoned off from the Oribi Road intersection, with law enforcement securing the area. At least five bullet casings were visible on the road, indicating the intensity of the gunfire that erupted shortly before 17:45. Sources at the scene told The Witness the robbery was initially planned closer to the N3 area, but the cash vehicle driver changed the route, possibly disrupting the suspects' plan. Despite this, the attackers intercepted the vehicle at the Oribi and Murray Road intersection, where they bombed the FCS armoured van. A white Isuzu bakkie, believed to have been used in the robbery, was found burning at the scene. The number and identity of the getaway vehicles remain unclear, but it is believed about 12 suspects were involved. The Hawks and SAPS were on site, managing the scene and conducting a full forensic and bomb investigation. By 20:00, the area remained an active crime scene and members of the public were urged to avoid it until it was declared safe. A previous report by The Witness confirmed the cash van driver was shot during the armed ambush and the armoured vehicle bombed at the intersection of Oribi and Murray roads, near the entrance to the nature reserve. According to AET Security, the driver sustained gunshot wounds to the leg and hand during the attack. Emergency services responded swiftly and took him to hospital for treatment. Authorities have urged anyone with information that could assist the investigation to come forward. Police have not yet released details about the amount of money stolen or the exact sequence of events.
