The Eastern Cape Transport Department has urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads. The department shared videos with The Citizen showing snow-covered fields and hills. The road surface has a layer of snow on it. Snow Eastern Cape Transport Department spokesperson Unathi Binqose said the Wapadsberg Pass on the R61 between Nxuba (Cradock) and Graaff-Reinet is not yet closed. 'However, motorists are urged to use that road only if they really need to, and in doing that, proceed with caution. We are keeping a close eye on other mountain passes as well. JOHANNESBURG – A nighttime collision between a packed minibus taxi and a pick-up truck has killed 15 people in rural South Africa, a transport official said on May 4. Five people were in hospital with serious injuries after the crash at around midnight on May 3 near the Eastern Cape town of Maqoma, about 1,000 kilometres south of Johannesburg, provincial transport spokesman Unathi Binqose official told broadcaster Newzroom Afrika. The drivers of both vehicles were among the dead and an inquest would be opened to determine what happened, Mr Binqose said. The victims included 13 passengers in the minibus, which was reportedly travelling from the town of Qonce to Cape Town, a journey of nearly 1,000 kilometres. South Africa has a sophisticated and busy road network. It also has a high rate of road deaths, blamed mostly on speeding, reckless driving and vehicles that are not roadworthy. A horrific head-on collision involving a minibus taxi and a bakkie claimed the lives of 15 people on the R63 between Adelaide and Maqoma at midnight on Saturday. Provincial transport spokesperson Unathi Binqose said the Toyota Quantum minibus taxi was travelling from Qonce to Cape Town when it collided with the Isuzu Double Cab bakkie. 'The driver of the Double Cab and 13 passengers in the Quantum, including the driver, were declared dead at the scene,' Binqose said. Six people were rushed to hospital, where one later succumbed to injuries, bringing the death toll to 15. Five others sustained serious injuries. An inquest docket has been opened. Daily Dispatch

Fifteen people have died in a head-on collision between two vehicles in the Eastern Cape. The incident, which took place on the R63 road between Adelaide and Maqoma (formerly Fort Beaufort), resulted in five others sustaining injuries. According to Eastern Cape transport department spokesperson Unathi Binqose, a fully loaded minibus taxi and a bakkie collided head-on at about midday on Saturday. "It is alleged that a white Quantum, travelling from Qonce to Cape Town, collided head-on with an Isuzu double cab [bakkie] that was travelling from Adelaide to KwaMaqoma direction. The driver of the double cab died on the scene and 13 occupants in the Quantum were also declared dead on the scene," said Binqose. The taxi driver was among those declared dead at the scene. Six people were injured and rushed to local hospitals. One person died of their injuries at the hospital, according to Binqose. "An inquest docket has been opened for further investigations as both drivers died in the accident," he added.
