KOTA KINABALU, Aug 17 (Bernama) -- Sabah's first locally developed e-hailing application, Borneo VeGO E-Pengangkutan (Borneo VeGo), has been officially launched, marking a new milestone in the state's journey towards digital innovation and community-driven entrepreneurship.
The launch was officiated by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun, representing Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajij Mohd Noor, yesterday in the presence of cooperative leaders, entrepreneurs, and community stakeholders
Cooperative of Borneo Transport Entrepreneurs (KUPBB) advisory chairman Rosli Awang Damit said Borneo VeGO was more than just a transportation service. Built under KUPBB, the app is a digital entrepreneurship platform designed to empower local communities.
'Borneo VeGO is not just an e-hailing app. It is a symbol of modern cooperative strength, developed with the spirit of togetherness, fair income distribution, and shared benefits. In terms of functionality, effectiveness, and user comfort, Borneo VeGO can stand alongside global players such as Grab,' Rosli said in a statement to Bernama.
He explained that, unlike conventional platforms, Borneo VeGO was created to ensure fairer commission structures and to allow more local drivers, particularly those from rural areas, to participate in the digital economy without depending on external companies. Beyond transport, Rosli said the app also includes food and beverage delivery as well as daily essentials, opening new opportunities for small traders, night market vendors, and traditional food entrepreneurs. 'This initiative will inject fresh momentum into Sabah's micro, small and medium-sized enterprises,' he added.
Rosli said the launch was only the beginning, as KUPBB plans more collaborations, training, and incentives to enable more Sabahans to participate and benefit from this digital transformation.
'While challenges lie ahead, with government support, strong community cooperation, and the determination of our cooperative members, Borneo VeGO will continue to grow and become a pride of Sabah,' he continued. 'Borneo VeGO is not just an e-hailing service. It is a unifying platform that connects passengers and drivers, while building a sustainable digital economy for the people of Sabah.'

Ringgit ends lower vs US dollar ahead of FOMC minutes release this week

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit closed lower against the US dollar ahead of the release of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting minutes this week. At 6 pm, the local note slid to 4.2200/2240 from last Friday's close of 4.2085/2155. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said mixed signals from US Federal Reserve (Fed) officials along with weakening economic data make the call for a rate cut in September look increasingly daunting. "Thus far, the odds for 25-basis point rate cut in September are about 84 per cent based on the federal funds futures contract,' he told Bernama. The FOMC minutes meeting will be released next Friday, Aug 22. He said the US producer price index (PPI) for July released last week was much higher than expected, with the headline PPI rising 3.3 per cent on an annual basis, the largest increase since February when core PPI increased 3.7 per cent. "So the impression is that inflation risk would limit the odds for a rate cut,' he added. At the close, the ringgit settled mixed against a basket of major currencies. It strengthened versus the Japanese yen to 2.8632/8661 from last Friday's close of 2.8653/8702. However, it slid against the British pound to 5.7139/7193 from 5.7050/7145 at the end of last week and eased vis-a-vis the euro to 4.9290/9336 from 4.9185/9267. The ringgit traded lower against other ASEAN currencies. It decreased versus the Singapore dollar to 3.2902/2936 from 3.2820/2877 at last Friday's close and weakened against the Thai baht to 12.9942/13.0121 from 12.9760/13.0032. The local currency also declined vis-a-vis the Philippine peso to 7.40/7.42 from 7.37/7.39 previously and edged down against the Indonesian rupiah to 260.4/260.9 from 260.2/260.8. - Bernama

19 High-impact Programmes For Indian Community This Year, Says Ramanan

GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- A total of 19 high-impact programmes across three core areas under the Socioeconomic Development Programme for the Indian Community (PPSMI) have been planned with an allocation of RM22.27 million for this year, the Dewan Rakyat was told today. Deputy Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Datuk Seri R. Ramanan, who is also responsible for addressing issues related to the Indian community and the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (MITRA), said the three focus areas for community development include education and training, spirituality and culture as well as social well-being. In this regard, he urged parties not to play up sentiments inside or outside the House and on social media by claiming that the Indian community is being neglected by the Prime Minister and the MADANI Government. 'It is evident that the MADANI government today has done more to protect and safeguard the welfare of the Indian community compared to previous administrations,' Ramanan said when winding up the debate on the motion of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) in the Dewan Rakyat today. Ramanan also dismissed claims that MITRA had failed to utilise its allocations for 2023 and 2024, stressing that the agency had spent 100 per cent of its funds in 2023 and 99 per cent in 2024. He said in 2023, MITRA fully utilised RM100 million across 221 initiatives benefiting 134,510 members of the Indian community, while in 2024, RM98.9 million was spent on 13 programmes, benefiting 122,082 individuals across different age groups. 'Each year, MITRA is allocated RM100 million to implement PPSMI. Its implementation is intervention-based, focusing on entrepreneurship and careers, education and training, spirituality and culture and social well-being,' he said. He stressed that coordination was necessary to prevent overlap and duplication of resources, particularly in areas such as Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), which fall under the jurisdiction and management of the National TVET Council. On the 13MP, Ramanan said the document outlined measures to uplift the socioeconomic status of the Indian community through initiatives and programmes based on the Malaysian Indian Blueprint and the Indian Community Action Plan.
