UK family killed in car crash on holiday in southern Portugal

The Guardian2 days ago
A UK family have been killed in a car accident while holidaying in southern Portugal, local authorities have confirmed.
Domingos Serrano, 55, his wife, Maria, 51, and their 20-year-old twin sons, Afonso and Domingos, died when their car collided with another vehicle on Saturday on the IP2 motorway near Castro Verde, in the Alentejo region,.
Also killed in the crash was a 19-year-old woman reported to have been the girlfriend of one of the twins, along with the 26-year-old driver of the other car involved.
The family were reportedly on their way from Faro to Mourão, in Portugal's south-east, where they regularly spent holidays.
The victims, originally from the Mourão area, lived in Thetford, Norfolk. Though they were resident in the UK, it is understood they were not British nationals, according to Sky News.
In a statement, the municipal council of Mourão confirmed the deaths and declared two days of mourning. 'It is with great regret that the municipality announces this information, offering its condolences to the families and friends of the victims,' it said.
'In the car there were four occupants, of Mouranese nature, and a young woman with affinity to the family. Residents in England, [they] follow from Faro to Mourão, for the usual and deserved vacation.'
The council announced the cancellation of all municipal activities and events across the weekend as a mark of respect.
Tributes have been paid to the family by non-league Thetford Town Football Club, where the twins had played for the under-18s team.
In a post shared on social media, the club said: 'Thetford Town Football Club would like to pass on our sincere condolences to the Serrano family and the local Portuguese community after the recent tragedy while on holiday.
'Afonso and Domingo's were both an integral part of our U18's team in recent years, both brothers sadly passed away in Portugal with their parents and friends in a tragic car accident. The loss of this lovely family will leave a massive void in the local community.'
'Partiram, mas nunca serao esquecidos,' the club said, which translates to: 'They are gone, but they will never be forgotten.'
An investigation into the cause of the crash is under way.

Target shooter 'coldly executed girl, 4, in back seat of car after making her watch as he murdered her grandpa'

A crazed gunman ran into naked into a portaloo after allegedly shooting dead a Target worker, a grandfather, and his young granddaughter. Ethan Blaine Nieneker, 32, was subdued by police tasers during his mad dash after his alleged rampage through the store in northern Austin. Target worker Hector Leopoldo Martinez Machuca, 24, was killed along with Adam Chow, 65, and his four-year-old granddaughter. Austin police alleged Nieneker made the little girl watch him murder Chow and wound his wife before he callously executed her. The department released his booking photograph on Tuesday, showing him staring straight at the camera with several fresh cuts on his face. Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said during a press conference on Monday that he stole two cars after the shooting, and wrecked the first one while fleeing from cops. Nieneker was described as white and wearing a Hawaiian shirt at the time of the shooting. Police said they received calls about the shooting 15 minutes later and rushed to the scene within four minutes. They found three people bleeding out with gunshot wounds in the parking lot. Medics pronounced two of the victims dead at the scene, while a third died from their injuries while being rushed to hospital. The gunman fled the scene in a vehicle he stole from the parking lot at the Target store, which police said they believe belonged to one of the victims. Davis said he 'wrecked' the car and leapt into another vehicle from a Volkswagen dealership nearby, and continued leading police on a chase. Cops pursued the shooter for 18 miles through the heart of Austin. They caught him in the south of the city where they deployed a taser before taking him into custody. The Daily Mail has also unearthed photographs of Nieneker from social media, showing him grinning with friends at social events, posing while wearing a Covid-style mask by a trash bin, and posing beside a fireplace. Another Facebook image shows the alleged gunman holding a large brown leaf in front of his face and creepily peering over it, while a fifth photo shows Nieneker wearing an American flag as a bandana. Police Chief Davis told reporters on Monday evening that Nieneker has a history of mental illness and a prior criminal history. Records obtained by the Daily Mail show he has been arrested numerous times since 2011, including an apprehension in August 2015 for assaulting a family member. Nieneker was also previously arrested for driving while intoxicated twice, criminal mischief and a violation of a bond or protective order. A suspected motive for the shootings and the names and ages of the victims have not yet been disclosed. Shoppers and employees at Target said they ran for cover when they heard gunshots ring out in the parking lot. 'I was inside the store, but then I hear on the radio like shots fired, so then they just told us "active shooter..." so we just ran outside, we told guests to get out,' Target employee Freyen Sagastume told KXAN. 'I thought that this only happened like in the news and stuff and then like I kind of just froze at first, but then I saw everyone running.' Meanwhile, at the nearby Jiffy Lube, employees hunkered down and locked the store's doors when they became aware there was a shooting outside. One mechanic, Paul Smith, told Spectrum Local News he saw people running from their cars in the parking lot in a panic. 'I had just gotten back from the Target like a minute before,' he said. A spokesperson for Target also said it will be providing counseling to staff members who experienced the shooting. 'We are devastated by the violence that occurred today at our store in Austin, Texas. Our hearts are with the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives, our team in Austin and all those impacted by this tragedy,' the spokesperson said. 'We are working with law enforcement as they conduct their investigation and are grateful to the first responders who acted quickly at the scene. 'In the days ahead, we will continue partnering with law enforcement and will be providing support resources, including grief counseling, to our team.'

Chaotic surveillance video shows moment car slams into New York food truck, killing three people

The moment a car slammed into a New York City food truck, killing the driver and two pedestrians, has been captured in horrific surveillance video obtained by the Daily Mail. The New York Police Department said the wreck unfolded on Tuesday a little after 8:30am on 42nd Street near 19th Avenue in Astoria, a neighborhood in Queens. The video shows a gray Toyota Corolla flying down the road before striking two pedestrians and ramming head-on into the food truck. After the impact, the Corolla spun around and hit a Volvo sedan that was traveling northbound on 42nd Street while it was attempting to make a U-turn to go south. Debris from all the vehicles involved was scattered all over the street as police and paramedics rushed to the scene to render whatever aid they could. The 84-year-old man behind the wheel of the Corolla and the 70-year-old pedestrian were both transported to Elmhurst Hospital, police said. Neither of them survived. The other pedestrian who was hit, a 42-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. The driver of the Volvo was unharmed and no other injuries were reported. Giancarlo Caruso was standing right next to the men who were standing on the street who were killed and said the car 'missed me by a millimeter'. 'All of a sudden I hear loud screeching from tires and a really loud engine roar. It sounded like it was right on top of me. Someone screamed really loudly,' Caruso said. 'As soon as I heard that scream and the screeching, I stepped back and a vehicle going about 60 miles an hour mauled two of the customers that were with me,' he added. 'I felt the wind hit my leg and like I said, the gentleman right next to me got struck really bad.' Caruso said he went into 'fight or flight mode' after the collision. He saw someone trying to rip the door off the Corolla to help the driver out, so he ran over to help out before calling 911. When asked to describe the scene and the victims, Caruso said the two men who were hit were 'laid out and lifeless'. He also saw blood on the windshield of the Corolla. Francisco Neto, the owner of a doggy day care on the street where the crash happened, said he knew one of the pedestrians who was killed. He identified him only as Joaquin and said he managed Astoria Discount Tire right across the street from his business. Neto said he got close to Joaquin after he introduced himself about a year ago when the tire shop first opened. The NYPD declined to confirm the identity of any of the victims when contacted by Daily Mail. 'The guy who died, his name is Joaquin. Very nice guy. He helped us a lot with the cars here. He just replaced all four of my tires the other day,' Neto said, adding that he was in his mid-forties. 'It's sad,' he added. 'Everybody here is a mechanic, tow truck, tire shop, but I know them. I've been here for almost 10 years.' The NYPD told Daily Mail that no arrests have been made in connection to the crash, but clarified that they are still investigating what happened.
