Club pays tribute to UK footballer twins, 20, killed along with mum, dad & 2 others in horror Portugal head on crash

A FOOTBALL club has vowed tragic twins Afonso and Domingos will be 'never forgotten' after they were among six killed in a horror head-on smash in Portugal. The 20-year-old siblings, their dad Domingos Serrano, 55, wife Maria Joao, 51, and two others all died in the early hours of Saturday. 5 A football club has paid tribute to twins, 20, and parents, 55 & 51, killed in head-on smash in Portugal Credit: 5 Domingos and Afonso, 20, used to play at Thetford Town Youth FC Credit: Solarpix 5 The family had just rented a Nissan Juke at Faro Airport before they smashed into another vehicle on the IP2 main road near Castro Verde. The 19-year-old girlfriend of one of the twins – believed to be of Polish origin but living in the UK – was also killed, along with the other driver, 36-year-old Ruben Goncalves. Local reports said Goncalves, from Almodovar, worked at the Neves-Corvo zinc-copper mine and had a four-year-old son. Thetford Town Youth FC, where the twins once played, paid tribute in a heartfelt Facebook post. It read: 'Thetford Town Football Club would like to pass on our sincere condolences to the Serrano family and the local Portuguese community after the recent tragedy while on holiday. 'Afonso and Domingo's were both an integral part of our U18's team in recent years, both brothers sadly passed away in Portugal with their parents and friends in a tragic car accident.' The club said their loss would leave a 'massive void' in the local community, signing off with a Portuguese phrase meaning: 'They are gone, but they will never be forgotten.' It added in a separate post: 'They will be sadly missed. Condolences to all their family. Rest in peace.' Shocked locals have also shared their condolences online. Heidi Smith commented: 'Absolute shock a lovely family and will be missed.' Brit granddad, 62, 'was in RELATIONSHIP with daughter-in-law, 33, he tried to drown in Florida resort pool' Michelle Jermy added: 'Absolutely heartbreaking. Such a loss, condolences to all those grieving and thinking of family, friends and the wider community processing the pain from this sad news. Rest in peace.' Louise McLaughlin, from Thetford, said: 'Absolutely heartbreaking. Rest in peace.' Tania Marques Da Cruz wrote: 'My most sincere condolences to all those killed. I hope their souls rest in peace. 'It's so sad to hear of people leaving their homeland and friends in search of a better life and then have their lives end like this. How unfair life is.' Cesar Caleiro said: 'My sincere condolences to the loved ones of those killed. Mourao must rally round to comfort the families of the victims.' The crash happened around 1.40am on a stretch of road where the speed limit is 49mph. The family – originally from Mourao in the Evora district but long settled in England – had landed at Faro Airport just hours earlier and were driving north for their summer break. Domingos, believed to live in Thetford, Norfolk, had celebrated his 55th birthday only two days before boarding the flight to Portugal. A source close to the investigation said the wreckage was so severe 'officers could only recover half a number plate' before piecing together who was inside. The grim discovery came after the couple's daughter called police, unable to reach her parents or brothers after hearing about the crash. The insider said: 'With the information she gave them officers made checks with the hire car firm at Faro Airport and tragically discovered a match. 'That was how they were able to confirm the identities of the five occupants in the car with the four members of the same family inside.' The GNR police force is investigating the cause of the smash. Mourao town hall has declared two days of mourning from Sunday. A spokesman said: 'There were four occupants in the car, all from Mourao, and a young woman with ties to the family. 'Residents of England, they were traveling from Faro to Mourao for their usual and well-deserved vacation. 'It is with great sadness that the Municipality announces this information, offering its condolences to the families and friends of the victims. 'We inform you that all activities and events promoted by the Municipality are cancelled for the entire weekend.' 5 Twins Domingos and Afonso, 20, dad Domingos Serrano, 55, and mum Maria Joao, 51, died in a horror car crash in Portugal Credit: Solarpix

UK family killed in car crash on holiday in southern Portugal

A UK family have been killed in a car accident while holidaying in southern Portugal, local authorities have confirmed. Domingos Serrano, 55, his wife, Maria, 51, and their 20-year-old twin sons, Afonso and Domingos, died when their car collided with another vehicle on Saturday on the IP2 motorway near Castro Verde, in the Alentejo region,. Also killed in the crash was a 19-year-old woman reported to have been the girlfriend of one of the twins, along with the 26-year-old driver of the other car involved. The family were reportedly on their way from Faro to Mourão, in Portugal's south-east, where they regularly spent holidays. The victims, originally from the Mourão area, lived in Thetford, Norfolk. Though they were resident in the UK, it is understood they were not British nationals, according to Sky News. In a statement, the municipal council of Mourão confirmed the deaths and declared two days of mourning. 'It is with great regret that the municipality announces this information, offering its condolences to the families and friends of the victims,' it said. 'In the car there were four occupants, of Mouranese nature, and a young woman with affinity to the family. Residents in England, [they] follow from Faro to Mourão, for the usual and deserved vacation.' The council announced the cancellation of all municipal activities and events across the weekend as a mark of respect. Tributes have been paid to the family by non-league Thetford Town Football Club, where the twins had played for the under-18s team. In a post shared on social media, the club said: 'Thetford Town Football Club would like to pass on our sincere condolences to the Serrano family and the local Portuguese community after the recent tragedy while on holiday. 'Afonso and Domingo's were both an integral part of our U18's team in recent years, both brothers sadly passed away in Portugal with their parents and friends in a tragic car accident. The loss of this lovely family will leave a massive void in the local community.' 'Partiram, mas nunca serao esquecidos,' the club said, which translates to: 'They are gone, but they will never be forgotten.' An investigation into the cause of the crash is under way.

The 19-year-old girlfriend of one of the twins, believed to be of Polish origin but living in the UK, also died. The other driver – 36-year-old Ruben Goncalves from Almodovar – was killed instantly. Local reports said he worked at the Neves-Corvo zinc-copper mine and had a four-year-old son. The family were travelling north from the Algarve towards Mourao, in the district of Evora near the Spanish border, for a holiday. Police sources said the twins' parents were originally from Mourao but had been living in England for years, with both boys born in the UK. It is not known how many years ago their parents left their homeland to move to the UK. Domingos, believed to live in Thetford, Norfolk, had celebrated his 55th birthday on Thursday just two days before flying to Portugal. A shocking picture from the scene seen by The Sun shows the mangled wreckage of one of the two cars involved, beside the road where the speed limit is 49mph. A source close to the investigation said the vehicle was so badly damaged that 'officers could only recover half a number-plate' and began using that to work out who was inside. Four friends killed in horror crash after concert as victim's aunt reveals tragic last phone call from inside doomed car Later, a daughter of the couple – unable to reach her family and fearing they were involved after hearing about the crash – contacted police, the insider added. China's DeepSeek faces questions over claims after shaking up global tech

After causing shockwaves with an AI model with capabilities rivalling the creations of Google and OpenAI, China's DeepSeek is facing questions about whether its bold claims stand up to scrutiny. The Hangzhou-based startup's announcement that it developed R1 at a fraction of the cost of Silicon Valley's latest models immediately called into question assumptions about the United States's dominance in AI and the sky-high market valuations of its top tech firms. Some sceptics, however, have challenged DeepSeek's account of working on a shoestring budget, suggesting that the firm likely had access to more advanced chips and more funding than it has acknowledged. 'It's very much an open question whether DeepSeek's claims can be taken at face value. The AI community will be digging into them and we'll find out,' Pedro Domingos, professor emeritus of computer science and engineering at the University of Washington, told Al Jazeera. 'It's plausible to me that they can train a model with $6m,' Domingos added. 'But it's also quite possible that that's just the cost of fine-tuning and post-processing models that cost more, that DeepSeek couldn't have done it without building on more expensive models by others.' In a research paper released last week, the DeepSeek development team said they had used 2,000 Nvidia H800 GPUs – a less advanced chip originally designed to comply with US export controls – and spent $5.6m to train R1's foundational model, V3. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has stated that it cost more than $100m to train its chatbot GPT-4, while analysts have estimated that the model used as many as 25,000 more advanced H100 GPUs. The announcement by DeepSeek, founded in late 2023 by serial entrepreneur Liang Wenfeng, upended the widely held belief that companies seeking to be at the forefront of AI need to invest billions of dollars in data centres and large quantities of costly high-end chips. It also raised questions about the effectiveness of Washington's efforts to constrain China's AI sector by banning exports of the most advanced chips. Shares of California-based Nvidia, which holds a near-monopoly on the supply of GPUs that power generative AI, on Monday plunged 17 percent, wiping nearly $593bn off the chip giant's market value – a figure comparable with the gross domestic product (GDP) of Sweden. While there is broad consensus that DeepSeek's release of R1 at least represents a significant achievement, some prominent observers have cautioned against taking its claims at face value. Palmer Luckey, the founder of virtual reality company Oculus VR, on Wednesday labelled DeepSeek's claimed budget as 'bogus' and accused too many 'useful idiots' of falling for 'Chinese propaganda'. 'It is pushed by a Chinese hedge fund to slow investment in American AI startups, service their own shorts against American titans like Nvidia, and hide sanction evasion,' Luckey said in a post on X. 'America is a fertile bed for psyops like this because our media apparatus hates our technology companies and wants to see President Trump fail.' In an interview with CNBC last week, Alexandr Wang, CEO of Scale AI, also cast doubt on DeepSeek's account, saying it was his 'understanding' that it had access to 50,000 more advanced H100 chips that it could not talk about due to US export controls. Wang did not provide evidence for his claim. Tech billionaire Elon Musk, one of US President Donald Trump's closest confidants, backed DeepSeek's sceptics, writing 'Obviously' on X under a post about Wang's claim. DeepSeek did not respond to requests for comment. But Zihan Wang, a PhD candidate who worked on an earlier DeepSeek model, hit back at the startup's critics, saying, 'Talk is cheap.' 'It's easy to criticize,' Wang said on X in response to questions from Al Jazeera about the suggestion that DeepSeek's claims should not be taken at face value. 'If they'd spend more time working on the code and reproduce the DeepSeek idea theirselves it will be better than talking on the paper,' Wang added, using an English translation of a Chinese idiom about people who engage in idle talk. He did not respond directly to a question about whether he believed DeepSeek had spent less than $6m and used less advanced chips to train R1's foundational model. In a 2023 interview with Chinese media outlet Waves, Liang said his company had stockpiled 10,000 of Nvidia's A100 chips – which are older than the H800 – before the administration of then-US President Joe Biden banned their export. Users of R1 also point to limitations it faces due to its origins in China, namely its censoring of topics considered sensitive by Beijing, including the 1989 massacre in Tiananmen Square and the status of Taiwan. In a sign that the initial panic about DeepSeek's potential impact on the US tech sector had begun to recede, Nvidia's stock price on Tuesday recovered nearly 9 percent. The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 rose 1.59 percent after dropping more than 3 percent the previous day. Tim Miller, a professor specialising in AI at the University of Queensland, said it was difficult to say how much stock should be put in DeepSeek's claims. 'The model itself gives away a few details of how it works, but the costs of the main changes that they claim – that I understand – don't 'show up' in the model itself so much,' Miller told Al Jazeera. Miller said he had not seen any 'alarm bells' but there are reasonable arguments both for and against trusting the research paper. 'The breakthrough is incredible – almost a 'too good to be true' style. The breakdown of costs is unclear,' Miller said. On the other hand, he said, breakthroughs do happen occasionally in computer science. 'These massive-scale models are a very recent phenomenon, so efficiencies are bound to be found,' Miller said. 'Given they knew that this would be reasonably straightforward for others to reproduce, they would have known that they would look stupid if they were b*********** everyone. There is a team already committed to trying to reproduce the work.' Falling costs Lucas Hansen, co-founder of the nonprofit CivAI, said while it was difficult to know whether DeepSeek circumvented US export controls, the startup's claimed training budget referred to V3, which is roughly equivalent to OpenAI's GPT-4, not R1 itself. 'GPT-4 finished training late 2022. There have been a lot of algorithmic and hardware improvements since 2022, driving down the cost of training a GPT-4 class model. A similar situation happened for GPT-2. At the time it was a serious undertaking to train, but now you can train it for $20 in 90 minutes,' Hansen told Al Jazeera. 'DeepSeek made R1 by taking a base model – in this case, V3 – and applying some clever methods to teach that base model to think more carefully,' Hansen added. 'This teaching process is comparatively cheap when compared to the price of training the base model. Now that DeepSeek has published details about how to bootstrap a base model into a thinking model, we will see a huge number of new thinking models.'
