"None of them did it on purpose": Gambhir defends India players over catch-dropping 'fiasco' at Headingley

India Gazette7 hours ago

Leeds [UK], June 25 (ANI): Head coach Gautam Gambhir came out in defence of his side and declared that no player dropped a catch on 'purpose' in the aftermath of India's tantalising five-wicket defeat at Headingley in the five-match series opener against England.
India ushered in the new dawn in Test cricket without its batting bigwigs, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, with Shubman Gill taking up the captaincy mantle. The initial signs were positive from the young and inexperienced side, keeping the Headingley enchanted by putting up a batting masterclass on exhibition.
Despite a late collapse, India finished with 471 on the board and moved on to their plans of unsettling England's bustling 'Bazball' approach with the ball. Opportunities came and breezed past the Indian team in the first innings, and they conspired to dictate the outcome of the five-day contest.
India dropped six catches, with Yashasvi Jaiswal being the culprit for 50 per cent of those opportunities. On the final day, Jaiswal's face looked even more lugubrious after he dropped a sitter to give Ben Duckett an unprecedented lifeline on 97. Duckett taught India a lesson and went on to add 52 runs and finish on 149. While Indian players were lampooned for the horror show, Gambhir stayed by his side.
'Catches do get dropped. The best fielders have missed catches. None of them did it on purpose,' Gambhir told reporters while reflecting on the dropped chances in the post-match press conference.
Apart from India's lacklustre fielding, the tail-end collapse in both innings was at the heart of the visitors' downfall despite them being dominant for most of the fixture.
India's batting calamity echoed the difference between the top five batters and the bottom six. India's first half was the primary driving force and accumulated 721 runs, courtesy of five centuries. At the same time, the rest could only muster 65 runs, adding to India's agony.
'Yes, from a batting point of view, it's disappointing because, in the first inning, we lost seven wickets on 40 runs and six wickets on 30 runs in the second inning. When we had the opportunity to make around 600 runs in the first inning, we were in a situation where we could have dominated,' Gambhir said.
'But again, these things happen. So, hopefully, we can learn in the second test match. But the good thing was that we had opportunities all four or five days where we could have dominated this Test match,' he added.
After floundering in their attempts to defend 371 and England walking away with a 1- 0 lead, India will look to restore parity in Birmingham next week. (ANI)

Sanjay Manjrekar Goes Unfiltered, Tears Into Ravindra Jadeja's Flop Show Against England

More hits with the bat, fewer with the ball, as the Indian team suffered a 5-wicket defeat in the first Test of the 5-match series against England. In the entire match, India's lone spinner Ravindra Jadeja could bag only a single wicket, which came in the second innings, triggering chatter over his efficiency in the English conditions. The likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and even Shardul Thakur returned with better figures than the team's senior-most bowler in the match. Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar, who has been critical of Jadeja's performance in the past as well, didn't mince words as he fired shots at the spinner for failing to ustilise a Day 5 pitch effectively. "Funnily enough, the pitch didn't offer any lateral movement to India's seam bowlers. Even Bumrah couldn't get anything out of the pitch. Nothing in the air as well. Plus, the fact that Ben Duckett is tremendous against Bumrah and has one of the best records against him and against Jadeja. I don't think he's got out to Jadeja ever, and he's played Jadeja at home as well. So when you have an English batter who is very good against two of your frontline bowlers, then you're set for a win," he said after the end of the match on Tuesday, while speaking on Star Sports. In the two innings, young pacer Prasidh Krishna leaked runs at an economy rate of over 6. His inability to contain England batters also became a hot topic of debate. But, Manjrekar wasn't keen on criticising the pacer as these are still early days for him in the whites for India. "See, it's not fair to be critical of the younger players like Prasidh Krishna. There are obvious areas of improvement, but I'm going to be critical of Jadeja because this is a final-day pitch. There's a rough for him to play with. And in the end, I know there were a couple of chances there, but we have to expect more from Jadeja. These are not typical English conditions. This is not where the pitch has nothing to offer. I thought he didn't use the rough enough against Ben Stokes. He did, but against Ben Duckett very late in the day, in the innings, he came and started using the rough from experienced bowlers, experienced batsmen, you expect more. And somewhere, I think Jadeja was disappointing because the seamers had nothing in the pitch for them. But at least Jadeja has something," he said.

Former India Cricketer Slams Ravindra Jadeja: 'His Ineffectiveness Is Going To...'

Last Updated: Sanjay Manjrekar has questioned Ravindra Jadeja's impact against England in the Test series starting June 20 at Leeds. Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has said that Ravindra Jadeja might not be very effective against the England batters and that might be a major issue for India during their five-Test series against England, which begins on June 20 at Leeds, in what is being termed as a new era for Indian cricket. Manjrekar opined that it would be a massive problem for India if Jadeja couldn't make a significant impact with the ball. Manjrekar pointed out that the English batters did a brilliant job against Jadeja when England toured India last year. 'Jadeja's ineffectiveness is going to create problems. Ineffectiveness against the English batters, in the way they play him and played him in India," Manjrekar said while speaking on ESPNCricinfo. Jadeja bagged 19 wickets across eight innings in the five-match home Test series against England in 2024. Manjrekar said that having Kuldeep Yadav besides Jadeja in the playing XI can strengthen the spin attack. 'So, you might just feel that you need some more spin support, but it's unimaginable, in England, first Test, to go with Kuldeep Yadav. But Kuldeep Yadav is such a tempting option and that is where I think with Gautam Gambhir, somebody who'll not go by the book, who knows India might want to have both Jadeja and Kuldeep in their team," Manjrekar said. Jadeja has bagged 21 wickets from 21 innings on English soil in Tests, including two five-fors. Kuldeep, on the other hand, has played only one Test in England. There is the lure of playing the latter, who can turn the ball irrespective of pitches, but Jadeja, despite his shortcomings as a left-arm spinner in SENA nations, is still a solid No. 7 batter. The decisions that head coach Gautam Gambhir takes will define India's cricket philosophy during the next one and a half months. A new skipper, a headstrong coach, some from the old guard and a few fresh faces will be determined to create a compelling narrative during this time when an in-transition India takes on a combustible England. That just three Indian sides, Ajit Wadekar's batch of 1971, Kapil's Devils in 1986 and Rahul Dravid's bunch in 2007, have won a Test series in Old Blighty in the past 90 years does not make for a rosy picture.

Gautam Gambhir's firm verdict on Jasprit Bumrah plan after Sunil Gavaskar's special plea amid glaring cracks in Leeds

The glaring cracks in the Indian pace unit left the legendary Sunil Gavaskar making a request to Jasprit Bumrah to play all five Test matches against England in the ongoing tour. While the fast bowler maintained the mystery around the possibility, India head coach Gautam Gambhir issued a fresh verdict after the side suffered a five-wicket loss in the opening game in Leeds. India's Jasprit Bumrah picked no wickets in the second innings in Leeds(Action Images via Reuters) Gavaskar's words came amid Bumrah picking up a five-wicket haul in the first innings. He single-handedly dictated the terms for India and denied England a lead at home. But while he finished with five for 83 in India's first bowling innings, the rest of the fast bowlers - Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna - picked up the remaining five for 283 runs. It was initially planned that Bumrah would play not more than three matches in England to manage his workload and long-standing struggle with back issues, which had troubled him as recently as the tour of Australia earlier this year. The 31-year-old was forced to miss the Champions Trophy due to a back spasm during the Sydney Test. And even as Bumrah stayed tight-lipped after wife Sanjana Ganesan made him aware of Gavaskar's request, Gambhir clarified that India's plan will remain unchanged, although they have yet to ascertain which two other matches he will play. Shastri kept saying...: Nasser flags 'Jadeja' blunder as 'Hardik' talk returns "I think for us to manage Bumrah's workload is more important because there's a lot of cricket going forward and we know that what he brings to the table as well," Gambhir said. "So before he came on this tour, it was already decided that he's going to play three Test matches, but let's see how his body turns up. But we haven't decided which two other Test matches he's going to play." Bumrah had failed to pick a single wicket in the final innings of the match at Headingley, which allowed England to successfully chase down the large victory target of 371 to win. Gambhir also defended India's bowling attack amid criticism during the five days of the test match. "This bowling attack has one bowler with five Tests under his belt, one has four, one has played two and one hasn't yet debuted," Gambhir said in defence of his bowling group. "We will have to give them time. "Earlier, we used to have four fast bowlers in the squad with an experience of more than 40 Tests. It doesn't make such a big impact in one-day or T20 matches, but when you go to Australia, England or South Africa for Tests, experience matters. These are early days. "If we start judging our bowlers after every Test, how will be develop a bowling attack? Outside Bumrah and (Mohammad) Siraj, we don't have that much experience, but they have quality, which is why they are in this dressing room. But we have got to keep backing them because it's not about one tour. It's about building a fast-bowler battery that can serve India for long time in Test cricket."
