Former India Cricketer Slams Ravindra Jadeja: 'His Ineffectiveness Is Going To...'

Sanjay Manjrekar has questioned Ravindra Jadeja's impact against England in the Test series starting June 20 at Leeds.
Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has said that Ravindra Jadeja might not be very effective against the England batters and that might be a major issue for India during their five-Test series against England, which begins on June 20 at Leeds, in what is being termed as a new era for Indian cricket.
Manjrekar opined that it would be a massive problem for India if Jadeja couldn't make a significant impact with the ball.
Manjrekar pointed out that the English batters did a brilliant job against Jadeja when England toured India last year.
'Jadeja's ineffectiveness is going to create problems. Ineffectiveness against the English batters, in the way they play him and played him in India," Manjrekar said while speaking on ESPNCricinfo.
Jadeja bagged 19 wickets across eight innings in the five-match home Test series against England in 2024.
Manjrekar said that having Kuldeep Yadav besides Jadeja in the playing XI can strengthen the spin attack.
'So, you might just feel that you need some more spin support, but it's unimaginable, in England, first Test, to go with Kuldeep Yadav. But Kuldeep Yadav is such a tempting option and that is where I think with Gautam Gambhir, somebody who'll not go by the book, who knows India might want to have both Jadeja and Kuldeep in their team," Manjrekar said.
Jadeja has bagged 21 wickets from 21 innings on English soil in Tests, including two five-fors. Kuldeep, on the other hand, has played only one Test in England.
There is the lure of playing the latter, who can turn the ball irrespective of pitches, but Jadeja, despite his shortcomings as a left-arm spinner in SENA nations, is still a solid No. 7 batter.
The decisions that head coach Gautam Gambhir takes will define India's cricket philosophy during the next one and a half months.
A new skipper, a headstrong coach, some from the old guard and a few fresh faces will be determined to create a compelling narrative during this time when an in-transition India takes on a combustible England.
That just three Indian sides, Ajit Wadekar's batch of 1971, Kapil's Devils in 1986 and Rahul Dravid's bunch in 2007, have won a Test series in Old Blighty in the past 90 years does not make for a rosy picture.

India should play Kuldeep Yadav in second Test: Monty Panesar

NEW DELHI: Former England spinner Monty anesar believes it's time for India to unleash Kuldeep Yadav at the expense of seam-bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur in the second Test in Birmingham where spin is likely to play a bigger role. India lost the first Test on Tuesday at Leeds as the hosts chased down a stiff 371 on the final day courtesy a brilliant 149 by opener Ben Duckett. "At Edgbaston, India could probably play (Ravindra) Jadeja and could actually go for the X-factor spinner in Kuldeep know that the Edgbaston wicket does turn a little bit. So you have that bit of an X-factor, which I think would be a better option. There's something about him," Panesar told PTI Videos. Panesar, who played a pivotal role in England's last Test series win in India (2012), feels the numbers are strongly in Kuldeep's favour. The left-arm wrist-spinner has taken 56 wickets in just 13 Tests at an average of 22.16. Thakur, in comparison, has 33 wickets in 12 Tests at a costlier average of 29.36 and a strike rate of 46.8. "He doesn't need turning tracks. This IPL showed that even without exaggerated turn, he can bowl tough lines that make life difficult for batters," he added. Thakur bowled just 16 overs and took two wickets giving away 89 runs in the first Test at Leeds and failed to make a meaningful impact with the bat, raising questions about his all-round value on English pitches that are no longer seaming as much. "If Shardul Thakur is only going to bowl six to eight overs and not give you 15 overs in the day, there's no point in playing him," Panesar pointed out. Pressed on whether India should pick Kuldeep instead of Jadeja, Panesar didn't hesitate. "I think they need to play Kuldeep because he has more of an X factor. There's something about him. Jadeja bowls too quickly. So I think, yeah, they need to bring in Kuldeep Yadav instead of Jadeja. He becomes the main attacking option," he said. But Panesar acknowledged India may hesitate to play only one spinner, especially given Jadeja's ability to contain runs. "I just think India won't go with that. Because India likes a defensive spinner. And they can then use Kuldeep. Because Kuldeep can't defend. He only attacks. So if he goes the distance, then they're in deep trouble," he said. "So I think they will probably play two spinners. Jadeja can then be the defensive guy. And then Kuldeep will be the attacking guy," added Panesar who represented England in 50 Tests, 26 ODIs and 1 T20I.
