Former batter Ambati Rayudu blind ranked some of India's finest all format captains from number one to six. In a video shared by ESPNcricinfo, Rayudu was asked to rank the likes of MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Sourav Ganguly, Rohit Sharma, Kapil Dev and Mohammed Azharuddin. As expected, Rayudu ranked Dhoni as India's finest ever leader, having won three ICC title during his reign as captain. For the unversed, Dhoni is the only India captain to win all three ICC white-ball events - 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy.
Dhoni's named had popped up after Rayudu had already ranked the other five former India captains. He kept Ganguly at no. 3, three followed by Kapil, who led India to their first-ever World Cup success back in 1983, at no. 4.
When it was Rohit's turn, Rayudu paused for a bit, before eventually ranking him as second. Next up was Kohli, India's most successful Test captain. Rayudu said that while Kohli would've been in the top two if Test cricket was the criteria, he decided to put him at no. 5 since it's an all format list.
Mohammad Azharuddin 's name followed next, and Rayudu swiftly assigned him the sixth spot.
With only one position left, the top spot, it has to be MS Dhoni for Rayudu. He placed his former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and former Team India skipper at number one with a big smile on his face. The two share a long association, particularly at CSK, and Rayudu has often publicly praised Dhoni.
Under Dhoni's captaincy, India played 332 matches across all formats, winning 178, losing 120 and drawing 15.
Under Dhoni's leadership, India completed a historic whitewash over Australia in the 2012/13 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, featuring at the pinnacle of India's distinguished achievements.
Ambati Rayudu's final ranking: (1) MS Dhoni, (2) Rohit Sharma, (3) Sourav Ganguly, (4) Kapil Dev, (5) Virat Kohli, (6) Mohammad Azharuddin.

Why Michael Vaughan believes ‘born leader' Harry Brook and not Ollie Pope should succeed Stokes as England captain?

After the shoulder injury-induced departure of England skipper Ben Stokes from the all-important fifth Test of the Anderson-Tenulkar Trophy against India, the home team appears to show cracks under pressure in the leadership of Ollie Pope against a young Indian team. England, who lead the five-match Test series 2-1 ahead of the Oval Test, require 374 runs in the last innings to seal the series. While England would back themselves to chase down the target, having been a successful chasing side in the Stokes-Brendon McCullum era, the prospect of India squaring up the series 2-2 still looms over the home side. And now, the former England captain Michael Vaughan has batted for Harry Brook to lead the side in Stokes' absence in future. 'Harry Brook, to me, looks a leader. He looks a born leader,' Vaughan told the Test Match Special podcast. Brook has taken over the captaincy of England in the ODIs after Jos Buttler stepped down from his role after a poor show at the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. 'If Ben Stokes is injured in the future can't Pope stay as vice-captain and Harry Brook gets the leadership role? I look at someone like Ollie Pope, who looks a fantastic vice-captain. He is a brilliant person to have next to the captain to come up with ideas. Sometimes vice-captains aren't brilliant captains,' added Vaughan. Vaughan is considered to be one of the finest brains to have led the English side. England have won 26 of 51 Tests under Vaughan's captaincy between 2003 and 2008, and he has led England to the famous 2005 Ashes win. Vaughan has been a staunch supporter of grooming Brook as future England captain. 'Marcus Trescothick was a magnificent vice-captain for me but you wouldn't want to give him the captaincy.' England are 50/1 and need 324 more runs to win the Test. England are also one batter short after Chris Woakes was ruled out of the remainder of the match as he injured his shoulder while fielding in the first innings. 'It is not Ollie Pope's fault England are in this position. It is the dropped catches. There were a couple of times he nipped off the field. It might have been for a comfort break, but it looked like he was going off for tactical advice. I don't know well enough and am not in the dressing room. I just want the best captain who is the best leader leading the England side. I don't think a good vice-captain will necessarily be a good captain,' said Vaughan. Pope is leading England in a Test for the fifth time.

IND vs ENG 5th Test: 'They empty the tank' – Former England captain draws parallel between Mohammed Siraj and Ben Stokes

Ben Stokes and Mohammed Siraj (X) Former England captain Graham Gooch believes the intense five-match Test series between India and England is crucial for the future of Test cricket, while expressing concerns about the format's sustainability if it remains dominated by just the "big three" nations - India, England, and Australia. Speaking on the sidelines of the fifth Test in London, the 72-year-old cricket legend emphasized the need for the ICC to support financially weaker cricket nations to ensure Test cricket's survival beyond the major powers. The current trend shows most Test cricket being played between India, England, and Australia in five-match series, while financially weaker nations like West Indies, South Africa, and New Zealand typically participate in shorter two or three-match series. I won't say smaller countries, but less financially (well off)," Gooch told PTI. India need EIGHT wickets, England 324 runs: Who will come out on top at The Oval? "Because you've got to preserve Test cricket. You can't just play three teams. If other teams, like New Zealand, West Indies, South Africa, play less and less Test cricket, no one will have anyone to play against. So they've got to support the game on a whole," said Gooch, who scored 8900 Test runs for England. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Access all TV channels anywhere, anytime Techno Mag Learn More Undo Gooch praised the quality of cricket displayed in the current India-England series, noting its importance for the Test format. "It's been an amazing series and really, really good for Test Cricket. Because we know that franchise cricket is all over the place in the world and Test cricket is under pressure," Gooch stated. Despite the retirements of veteran players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli , Gooch expressed confidence in India's new generation of cricketers. Poll Who do you think is the standout player in the current India-England Test series? Shubman Gill Ben Stokes Mohammed Siraj Other "Look, one door closes, another one opens. You can't expect, great players or any players to play on forever. There is a time when they decide that they've had enough or come to retirement or whatever. Those two players you mentioned, have been wonderful servants for India and for our great game. It's time for other people to step in. I think the young Indian players have done brilliantly," he remarked. Gooch particularly praised Indian captain Shubman Gill , who has scored 754 runs in the series, approaching Sunil Gavaskar's all-time Indian record. "The captain's an outstanding player. I think his technique is superb. His concentration and his temperament over this series has been brilliant. You've got to remember that your job, or his job, is to score runs. He's not put in the team just to be captain. He's in the team to score runs," Gooch commented. The former England captain addressed England's dependence on Ben Stokes , whose absence in the final Test affected the team's bowling capabilities. "Stokes, to me, has been a phenomenon this season. I mean, he's a key player for England because he balances the side. If he doesn't play, England have to go a batsman down. And if they go a batsman down, we're not good enough to have four bowlers. We need five bowlers. To have a four-bowler bowling attack, in my opinion, you need two world-class bowlers. And England don't have that at the moment," he explained. Gooch drew parallels between Stokes and India's Mohammed Siraj for their dedicated bowling performances. "Siraj, I've got a lot of time for him. Very passionate, puts it in every time. And Ben Stokes is a similar sort of character. When he walks across the white line, he empties the tank. You understand what I mean by that. He doesn't leave anything behind. He gives it everything," Gooch said. Regarding the on-field tensions during the series, Gooch viewed them as natural outcomes of competitive cricket. "There's a lot of passion in international cricket when you're playing against a country, when the series is very competitive and very tight. And sometimes, tempers flare a little bit and things are said that maybe you regret. But, it all happens in the spur of the moment. And I think it's two teams going very hard at each other and trying to win the game. I don't think it's carried on afterwards," he concluded.
