Himanta calls Rahul ‘traitor', slams Priyanka's proposed visit to Dhubri

Time of India4 days ago
Guwahati: Assam CM
on Sunday called the Lok Sabha's leader of opposition,
, a 'traitor', alleging that the Congress leader was siding with Bangladeshi and Pakistani Muslims.
Speaking on the sidelines of a campaign rally, ahead of the Bodoland Territorial Council election, in lower Assam's Tamulpur, Sarma said, "Rahul Gandhi is an anti-India person.

He is only with Bangladeshi and Pakistani Muslims, not with Indian Hindus and Indian Muslims. He is a pakka deshdrohi (traitor)."
Sarma's comments came on the back of queries put forward to the CM after reports emerged that Rahul and
were likely to visit Assam.
While Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi said Rahul and Priyanka's visit would soon materialise, with the latter keen on visiting lower Assam's Dhubri district, Sarma launched a scathing attack on Priyanka, saying that even women from self-help groups (SHG) were more advanced than her.
"I don't have any objection to Priyanka Gandhi coming to Assam. But our women from self-help groups are a hundred times more advanced than Priyanka Gandhi. Our women, especially those working with SHGs, will defeat Priyanka Gandhi in every sphere. She won't even be in the contest," Sarma said.
The CM added that Assamese women were far more advanced and were experts in preparing traditional delicacies like laroo and pitha, and transplanting paddy, besides taking care of the education of their children.
Sarma also took a dig at Priyanka, questioning her intent to visit Dhubri. "People of a particular religion attract the
. They think Assam means Dhubri. I have no problem with their Dhubri visit, but any person, who's coming to Assam, should first say that he or she will come to Kamakhya, Batadrava, Charaideo Moidams and Rangghar," Sarma said.
"Congress only recognises a section of the religious minority in Dhubri. They do not understand the love of any other people," he added.

Earlier in the day, Gogoi said several senior national leaders will visit Assam from time to time and interact with the people, as part of their bigger strategy, ahead of the 2026 assembly polls. "Priyanka Gandhi has informed us that she wants to visit Assam and meet the people. Last time, she went to Dhubri and promised people there that she will come again, if Congress wins (in the Lok Sabha election)," Gogoi added.
While Congress managed to win three out of 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam, Congress's Rakibul Hussain won in Dhubri by a huge margin of over 10 lakh votes.

‘His brain has been stolen': Maharashtra CM Fadnavis hits out at Rahul Gandhi over voter fraud claims

Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and his deputy Eknath Shinde on Thursday dismissed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's allegations that the 2024 Maharashtra assembly elections were 'stolen', accusing him of spreading falsehoods to mislead the public. Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis rejects Rahul Gandhi's claim that the Maharashtra assembly polls were 'stolen". Fadnavis, speaking to reporters near Panaji, said Gandhi's remarks were baseless and laced with personal attacks. 'I feel that, may be, he (Gandhi) should get it (brain) checked,' he said. 'Either his brain has been stolen or a chip in his brain is missing. That is why he is making such statements often,' PTI quoted Fadnavis as saying. The Maharashtra chief minister was in Goa to attend an event as the chief guest. Meanwhile, in an interview with PTI, deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde said, 'With his false allegations, Rahul Gandhi is trying to create a perception, but it won't be accepted by the people.' Their remarks came after Gandhi, addressing reporters at the AICC headquarters in New Delhi, claimed that the Maharashtra election results confirmed the Congress party's suspicion that the polls had been manipulated. 'Not giving machine-readable voter list convinced us that the Election Commission (EC) colluded with BJP to 'steal' elections in Maharashtra,' alleged the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. He further said, 'They said we are going to destroy the CCTV footage. This was surprising to us because there was a question in Maharashtra about a massive voting after 5.30 pm for the numbers to add up. Our people knew that in the polling booths, no such thing happened. There was no massive voting after 5.30 pm.' 'These two things made us believe with reasonable certainty that the Election Commission of India was colluding with the BJP to steal elections,' Gandhi added. The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance had secured a sweeping victory in the November 2024 Maharashtra assembly elections, winning 230 of the 288 seats. The BJP alone bagged 132, followed by allies Shiv Sena and NCP with 57 and 41 seats, respectively. In contrast, the Congress-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) performed poorly, with Congress winning only 16 seats, Sharad Pawar's NCP (SP) 10, and Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena (UBT) 20. Gandhi also alleged irregularities in the voter list in Karnataka, claiming a 'vote chori' of over 1,00,000 votes in one constituency. He cited 11,965 duplicate entries, 40,009 fake or invalid addresses, 10,452 single-address voters, 4,132 invalid photos, and 33,692 instances of misuse of Form 6. In response, the Karnataka chief electoral officer asked Gandhi to submit a signed declaration with the names of the allegedly excluded or ineligible voters. Gandhi replied, 'What I say to the people is my word. Take it as an oath. This is their (EC) data, and we are displaying their data.'

Russian Prez Putin to visit India for annual summit, but dates not finalised yet

NEW DELHI: A specific timeframe has not been finalised for Russian President Vladimir Putin's proposed visit to India for an annual summit, people familiar with the matter said on Thursday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi receives Russian President Vladimir Putin for a meeting at Hyderabad House in New Delhi in December 2021. (PTI FILE IMAGE) Putin's visit figured during National Security Adviser Ajit Doval's meetings with senior Russian officials in Moscow on Thursday. Russia's state-run media inaccurately cited Doval as saying that Putin would travel to India in late August, the people said on condition of anonymity. 'The NSA, during his visit to Moscow, said that the dates of President Putin's visit to India are being worked out,' one of the people cited above said. 'The time of end-August being reported is incorrect,' the person said. Doval did not indicate a specific date or time during his engagements in Moscow, the people said. Putin is expected to travel to India this year for the annual India-Russia Summit, following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Moscow for the summit in 2024. Though the two sides have been involved in initial preparations for the visit, they have so far not finalised any specific timeframe for the trip, the people said. Doval is in Moscow for meetings with senior Russian officials to strengthen security and economic ties. The trip had been scheduled earlier but gained importance following US President Donald Trump's decision on Wednesday to impose an additional 25% punitive tariff on India for purchasing Russian oil. External affairs minister S Jaishankar is also expected to travel to Russia in the third week of August for a meeting of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation (IRIGC-TEC), the primary mechanism for overseeing trade and economic cooperation.

AHMEDABAD: A controversial anti-BJP post from the Facebook account of former Bhavnagar city BJP president Yogesh Badani triggered outrage and was deleted within 13 minutes, causing a stir within the party's internal circles. The post, which bore the explosive slogan 'BJP Hatao, Desh Bachao' (Remove BJP, Save the Nation), was shared from Badani's official account, stunning party workers and sending shockwaves through the local leadership. As the controversy snowballed, Yogesh Badani broke his silence, telling local media that his Facebook account had been compromised.
