Bears reportedly sign Caleb Williams' backup Tyson Bagent to 2-year, $10 million contract after strong preseason

Yahooa day ago
One of the Chicago Bears' biggest player-development wins in recent memory is being rewarded with a new contract. Backup quarterback Tyson Bagent reportedly signed a two-year, $10 million extension with the team Wednesday, per multiple reports.
Bagent's deal can inflate to as much as $16 million based on incentives, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
After starring at Shepherd, a Division II college, Bagent, now 25, joined the Bears as an undrafted free-agent ahead of the 2023 NFL season. He worked his way up the depth chart in training camp, eventually winning the No. 2 job behind Justin Fields.
Bagent was pushed into action immediately, starting four games for the Bears after Fields was sidelined with an injury. Bagent won his first start with the team, becoming the first Bears quarterback since Craig Krenzel to win his inaugural NFL start with the franchise. The start also made Bagent the first undrafted Division II quarterback to start an NFL game since 1950.
Bagent led the Bears to a 2-2 record during his starts, though he saw his production decline after the promising debut. He finished the season completing 65.7 percent of his passes, with three touchdowns against six interceptions.
Bagent retained his role as the team's backup in 2024, but barely saw any time on the field after the team selected Caleb Williams with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Bagent threw just two passes, completing both of them.
The hiring of Ben Johnson put Bagent under an even bigger microscope. With a new coaching staff in town, Bagent needed to prove himself as the best backup option behind Williams. Both quarterbacks looked the part during the team's 38-0 preseason blowout win over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.
Following Williams' strong performance, Bagent came on in relief and immediately led the team to three straight scoring drives. He finished the contest 13 for 22, with 196 yards and a touchdown in the win.
Bagent's reported extension seems to indicate his work in camp — and in the preseason — won over Johnson's staff. That wasn't a guarantee, as the team signed veteran Case Keenum in the offseason. Keenum missed the team's second preseason game due to an injury, though could stick around in a mentor role to both Bagent and Williams during the regular season.
While Bagent's play has made him a fan favorite, he's not expected to see the field this season. Williams is fully entrenched as the team's starter and deserves an opportunity to show growth after an uneven rookie season.
In his brief bursts of playing time, though, Bagent has looked like a capable backup quarterback. That's quite the accomplishment for a player every team passed on in the draft.

Derrick Harmon injury update: Latest news on Pittsburgh Steelers rookie's status

Derrick Harmon injury update: Latest news on Pittsburgh Steelers rookie's status originally appeared on The Sporting News The Pittsburgh Steelers have an injury concern with their 2025 first-round pick, defensive lineman Derrick Harmon. Harmon suffered an injury in the first half of the preseason Week 3 game against the Carolina Panthers. Video from the broadcast showed Harmon on a cart with a towel over his head. Harmon appears to have suffered the injury in the second quarter. Here's what we know about Harmon's status thus far. Derrick Harmon injury update UPDATE: According to head coach Mike Tomlin, Harmon suffered a knee sprain, but he didn't offer any details beyond that. While we didn't get a timeline, the fact that it's a knee sprain is great news after Harmon's troubling reaction to the injury initially. END OF UPDATE UPDATE: Some good news to report on Harmon, as the Steelers rookie was back on the sideline with his teammates in the fourth quarter. "He's out here now on the sideline, sitting on the bench in between Cam Heyward and TJ Watt. The Steelers' locker room is on the opposite side of this sideline. He was able to walk out here in street clothes. So we're gonna take that as a good update," Steelers sideline reporter Missi Matthews said. The fact that Harmon was able to go back to the sideline under his own power strongly suggests he has avoided a significant injury. END OF UPDATE UPDATE: Steelers sideline reporter Missi Matthews spoke to head coach Mike Tomlin at halftime but he did not have an update and said Harmon is still being evaluated. END OF UPDATE UPDATE: Steelers Senior Director of Communications Burt Lauten has announced that Harmon is dealing with a knee injury and has been ruled out for the rest of the game. The severity of Harmon's injury remains unknown. Here's video of Harmon being carted to the locker room. The look on his face is not good. END OF UPDATE Here's the screen capture of Harmon on the cart from the aforementioned video. The exact injury remains unknown as of this writing. Brian Batko of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette had this to say about the look on Harmon's face as he was being carted to the back. "The look on Steelers first-round pick Derrick Harmon's face when they briefly showed a glimpse of him on the cart on the KDKA broadcast? Not good at all. Damn," Batko wrote. We'll update this page when more information is available. Taken with the No. 21 overall pick in April's draft, Harmon is expected to start in his first season in the NFL. It goes without saying that losing Harmon would be a tough blow to the Steelers' defensive front. Big Super Bowl bets highlight preseason hopes

Yahoo Sports senior NFL writer Frank Schwab, senior NFL reporter Charles Robinson and senior betting analyst Ben Fawkes discuss some of the notable preseason tickets placed by bettors. Hear the full conversation on 'Inside Coverage' - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript And since we're in Las Vegas here at the Venetian, not far from the Yahoo Sportsbook, gotta talk about some big Super Bowl bets here. Ben Fox is with us, our betting expert. A couple of them you ran down in a story you wrote for Yahoo Sports. Somebody bet $25,000 on the Raiders to win the Super Bowl at 101 odds, a nice $2.5 million dollar payout. I didn't know Jason Fitz had that kind of money, but good for him. Uh, 1000 on the Patriots at 80 to 1. I actually don't mind that too much. I, I, I don't think it's gonna hit, but 80 to 1. I like those odds. This is, how do you come up with this? Somebody bet the Jets at 250 to 1 odds, but bet $3,196.96. Is that just what they had left in their app? I, I don't know the numbers $96 a number. There are two I want to talk about. First of all, somebody bet $2,500 on the Saints at 300 to 1. Ben, what, why? Why? Can you just send us the money? We could split that up. We could have a fun time here in Vegas. Listen, I like to tell people I report on the odds. I don't explain the bets, right? So I'm just, I'm just saying what people bet on, not why they bet on it. I want a time stamp on the bets because I, I wanna know what time, yeah, because like every once in a while, not often in my life, but occasionally a package will arrive at my house and I'll be like, he bought a lawn gnome, and then I'll look at my eBay account and I'll be like, oh my God, I bought a lawn gnome at like 3:24 in the morning on this date. That's the Raiders or that's, yeah, that's the same Super Bowl bet or the Raiders. Yeah. Oh wow, I dropped $25,000 and the Raiders won a Super Bowl last night. That ain't good. Don't want to find that receipt in your pocket. The Raiders one is fascinating, uh, because there's also a $10,000 bet on the Raiders at 100 to 1. And these are two, as I confirm, two separate betters, not the same bet with, with two bets. Also, the Raiders now have worse Super Bowl odds than when it was placed, which is never, never what you want. I go the other way where you want, and look, there's a lot of reasons people place these futures bets. Ultimately there's also marketplaces you can buy and sell. Right, so if the value goes up, and again, Raiders, you're not sure if they're gonna be good, but if they are, right, you could potentially make some money off of that even if you don't actually take the ticket all the way to the playoffs or the Super Bowl. You're not taking a Raiders all the way unless Geno Smith suddenly What I do want to talk about that I thought was a pretty good one. It's the Detroit Lions 54,500 again, that's kind of why not just go 55,000? What's, what are you holding back on that extra 500 for at 10 to 1. And here's why both of you guys, I'll start with you, Ben. I think the Lions have been actually undervalued like 10 to 1 to win the Super Bowl. We forget this team went 15-2 last season. Every conversation we have had about the Lions this offseason is centered around two names, Ben Johnson, Aaron Glenn. I get it, they're great. They are. Are we over rating? Have we gone the other way? Is a pendulum swung too far? It's not like they're just dragging guys out of the stands on a raffle to call plays. They still have professional coordinators here. Calvin Shepherd learned from Aaron Glenn. John Morton learned from Sean Payton. It was with Lions before. Are lions a good value now at 10 to 1. They also didn't have Aidan Hutchinson, right? He's coming back. So I think, right, right, playing the 5th in the league in DVOA on defensive without all those guys. So I, I think I, I totally agree. Uh, the last two years they're 27 and 7, right in the regular season. 15 and 2 last year. They also are better's best friend. They've gone 24-10 in the regular season against because they're not sneaking up on the on the market, right? 70%. They're favored to win the NFC North win total of 10.5%, which is tied with last year for their best since 1989, right? So they haven't been good for a while, but recently they've been good, and those odds, like you said, 10 to 1, great website, sports odds history. Goes back to 1977. Those are the best Super Bowl odds since then, right? So high expectations even with the disappointments the last two years. You feel like the two years ago against the Niners, maybe it was a year too early, but they probably should have won that game. Then last year, kind of their year, they just Jane Daniels does what he does and obviously injuries on defense. I do think it's a good bet. I think they've almost been overlooked with how well the Eagles played and. You know, we're talking about the Bucks and matchups in the playoffs. Like it was just a bad matchup for the Lions, right? They just, they had some turnovers, they played a bad game. The offense was great for a lot of the game too, the defense just couldn't stop a cold, so that was, you know, that was the issue. I think they're gonna be good again this season. Close

Heat Legend Sends Message About Draymond Green's NBA Career

One of the things that will be remembered when Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green retires from the NBA is his ability to win. Green wasn't always a flashy player, and he doesn't boast a mind-boggling physique that gives him an advantage against his opponents. However, he makes the most out of the chances he gets. What separates him from other stars around the league is being one of the best teammates. In his time playing with Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, the star forward elevated the team's backcourt with his intelligence on the floor. Green's sacrifice isn't easy for any star to do. However, he was willing to do the necessary things to help his team win, which is why he's a four-time champion. NBA legend Dwyane Wade understands that. Wade Honored Green's Legacy On the latest episode of his podcast, "Wy Network," the former Miami Heat star recognized what makes Green special. He also honored the legacy of the 6-foot-6 forward, mentioning how he's a winner in the NBA. "I just think that if someone wants to argue about Draymond's individual ranking, they just want to argue," Wade said. "...Draymond Green's career would not be talked about him as an individual player. It would be talked about him as a winner, as a team player, as a leader, all these things. Like, if you're a Draymond fan, you can't care what Draymond is ranked as an individual player because he doesn't go out with that individual mentality." Some fans may have a different opinion on Green. However, his peers respect him for the work he's put in as the heart and soul of the Warriors, which is why they've won four titles with story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Aug 19, 2025, where it first appeared in the NBA section.
