Shafee asked by AG to show cause over ‘Nazi hearing' claim

PETALING JAYA: The attorney-general (AG) has asked lawyer Shafee Abdullah to show cause why committal proceedings should not be brought against him over his description of a court proceeding as 'a Nazi-Germany kind of hearing'. In a letter dated June 23 and handed personally to Shafee, the AG sought a reply from him within seven days. 'If you do not provide a satisfactory explanation within seven days from the date of this notice, criminal prosecution will be initiated against you,' the letter, sighted by FMT, read. The letter was signed by deputy public prosecutor Saiful Edris Zainuddin on behalf of AG Dusuki Mokhtar and sent pursuant to Order 52, Rule 2B of the Rules of Court 2012. The provision states that any formal notice to show cause why a person should not be committed to prison or fined must be served personally. The letter claimed that Shafee, who acts for ex-prime minister Najib Razak in his ongoing criminal charges and civil suits, made the remark during a press conference on May 29, which was live-streamed via Najib's Facebook page. The letter alleged that the words spoken as a whole could undermine public confidence and interfere in the administration of justice. Malaysiakini last month reported Shafee's criticism of a court order to temporarily stop all proceedings linked to Najib's royal addendum, during which the lawyer allegedly compared the decision to 'a Nazi-Germany kind of hearing'. Shafee clarified to the media that the remark was made during an exchange with a reporter and was intended to educate the public, not undermine the judiciary. He also said the remark was made solely in the context of explaining the meaning and essence of a 'judicial decision'. Najib has obtained leave from the Court of Appeal to begin judicial review proceedings to enforce a royal decree which allows him to serve the remainder of his jail sentence under house arrest. Housewife loses RM129,420 in Telegram job scam
JERANTUT: A housewife in Jerantut lost RM129,420 after falling victim to a job scam promoted via the Telegram messaging app, which falsely used the name of a legitimate company. Jerantut deputy district police chief Deputy Superintendent Mohd Azahari Mukhtar said the victim received the offer on Aug 8. The job was supposedly to evaluate products and write reviews in return for commissions. He said the woman then communicated with an individual posing as an agent, who instructed her to make several payments under various pretexts, including task fees, company collaboration charges, and technical service fees. "Starting from Aug 13, the victim made multiple bank transfers to several local accounts. The total losses amounted to RM129,420. "On Aug 14, she was asked to make another payment but became suspicious," he said in a statement today. The victim later lodged a police report at the Jerantut Police Station. "It is understood that the money came from her savings and her husband's business earnings. "The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating," he added. Police have urged the public to be cautious of online job offers promising high returns and to verify account numbers using the official portal before making any transactions.

UMNO man urges swift enforcement of Royal addendum in SRC case
THE Federal Court's confirmation of the existence of a Titah Adendum (Addendum Decree) linked to former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak has reignited debate over his prison sentence, with calls for its immediate enforcement. According to UMNO Tumpat information chief Che Muhammad Redzuan Jihad, a lawyer, the matter should no longer be brought to the High Court, as the highest court had already ruled on its existence. 'The Titah Adendum is an order from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, not a political document. Prolonged debate only wastes time and confuses the people,' he said, stressing that swift implementation would uphold the dignity of the Malay Rulers. UMNO deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan echoed the view, saying there was no need for further litigation after the Federal Court ruling. Nevertheless, lawyer Haniff Khatri Abdulla told a Malay-language online portal that Najib could begin serving his sentence under house arrest as early as November if the High Court affirms the decree's validity. He noted administrative matters would not hinder enforcement once the court confirms it. Najib is currently serving a 12-year prison sentence for corruption involving SRC International, partially reduced through a royal pardon. Meanwhile, SRC International Sdn Bhd and its subsidiary Gandingan Mentari Sdn Bhd have filed a RM42mil civil suit against Najib. They alleged the funds, intended to secure Malaysia's energy future and benefit pensioners, were diverted into Najib's personal accounts. The High Court trial, before Judge Raja Ahmad Mohzanuddin Shah, resumes on Sept 8. 'The facts are stark: the RM42mil of public money, funds meant to secure Malaysia's energy future and intended for the benefit of civil service pensioners, ended up in the personal bank accounts of our former prime minister, the defendants. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the move included the recent approval of about 40,000 acres of land to be gazetted as villages in areas such as Sipitang, Tenom and several other districts. He said the gazetting exercise demonstrates the government's commitment to resolving long-standing issues faced by villagers, many of whom have lived on the land for generations. Hajiji said this assurance means villagers will no longer be seen as squatters but recognised as legitimate residents in settlements they have called home for decades. He was speaking at the Land Allocation Ceremony for the gazettement of Kampung Karamunting Baharu at SK Karamunting Open Hall on Friday, where he witnessed the handover of land owned by the Sandakan Municipal Council to be gazetted as Native Reserve Land. Hajiji described the event as a historic moment for the community, not only as a handover of land but also as recognition of the rights and history of residents who have lived in the area for more than 30 years.
