US military deploys 700 Marines to Los Angeles as anti-ICE protests turn violent, spread to San Francisco
The US military will temporarily deploy 700 Marines to Los Angeles, according to an official cited by Reuters. The deployment, intended to bolster National Guard forces already on the ground, marks a rare use of active-duty troops for domestic unrest.
'This violence that I've seen is disgusting,' LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell said. 'Looking at the violence tonight, I think we've got to make a reassessment.'
California leaders, including Governor Gavin Newsom, condemned President Donald Trump's move, calling it unconstitutional and authoritarian.
'This is a manufactured crisis,' Newsom wrote on X. 'He is creating fear and terror to take over a state militia and violate the U.S. constitution.'
'We're suing him,' added California Attorney General Rob Bonta.
President Trump urged aggressive enforcement and even suggesting that California's governor be arrested.
'I would do it if I were Tom,' Trump said when asked whether his immigration czar should arrest Newsom.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump called the protests 'migrant riots' and claimed Los Angeles was being 'invaded and occupied by illegal aliens and criminals.'
As of Sunday, US Northern Command confirmed 300 National Guard troops were stationed at key locations in the LA area, including around the Edward R. Roybal Federal Building, which houses a detention facility at the heart of the controversy.
Anti-ICE graffiti covered windows and walls around the site as demonstrators clashed with law enforcement. Guard troops could be seen at entrances and surrounding intersections.
The protests, initially sparked by federal immigration raids on Friday, have intensified into full-blown confrontations with police. On Sunday night, demonstrators reportedly set self-driving Waymo vehicles ablaze, shut down major freeways, and vandalized businesses.
LAPD reported 31 arrests across the weekend for offenses ranging from assault on officers to attempted murder with Molotov cocktails. Five police officers were injured.
Unrest has not been confined to Los Angeles. In San Francisco, 60 protesters were arrested on Sunday night after a demonstration turned violent near an ICE office.
'Everyone has a right to protest peacefully,' said San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie, 'but we will never tolerate violent and destructive behavior.'
The standoff between California and the White House is now legal, political, and military — with protests esclating.

As NDA 3.0 completes its first anniversary today, the perennially in election mode apparatus of the alliance must already be working overtime for the slate for the later part of the year. Bihar, one of the states readying for the Assembly elections, is slowly but surely seeing changes, ostensibly in favour of an overwhelming saffron win at present. Whatever that may be, the 2026 elections must be making the war rooms of various political parties working with a different game plan as it is where the INDIA bloc sees its chances. Tamil Nadu, by this time, next year would have had a new government in place. The question is, which party will get to run the state which is now seeing aggressive posturing by NDA and counter attacks by the DMK government. Once a formal alliance was sealed by the Centre with the principal Opposition party and old ally, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), the BJP must have felt relieved that it has made the first move, well. Given that the MGR-founded party is facing an identity and existential crisis in its 53rd year of existence, the cobbling together of the alliance with smaller parties being wooed establishes the fact that the saffron party is happy to ride piggyback on the Dravidian big brother this time around. Amit Shah's latest statement that the new alliance will sweep the 2026 polls has not entirely been rejected by the political pundits and as expected, pooh poohed by the DMK leaders. Its top-rung icons say that if the Dravidian ideology resonates with the people, it is nigh impossible for the BJP to set its foot in Tamil Nadu. While a few still consider the earlier elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha polls as a 'lost opportunity' for the BJP to have made inroads into the Tamil psyche, the highly unpopular way the administration has gone about its business has made the average public take a critical look at the goings-on in the State. Dynastic politics – that of Udayanidhi being groomed to take over from the present CM, M K Stalin - is still being helplessly accepted by the party machinery and followers as a 'natural' progression of the first family in retaining power. What is not left unnoticed is the increased presence of Karunanidhi's daughter and the CM's step-sister Kanimozhi in the central scheme of things, Stalin's blow hot blow cold with Modi government and the stench of corruption in the governance of the State which has been allowed to grow (the TASMAC case, for one), for a surgical strike later by the central machinery, closer to the poll dates. It is surely a work in progress for the non-DMK formation, but it is a known fact that the DMK has till date never managed a second successive stint in office. Will they break the jinx this time or will a currently docile anti-DMK alliance spring a surprise? If it is the final chance for the AIADMK to retain its political relevance, it is also the best-ever opportunity for the BJP in nearly five decades to make its presence felt in the state's corridors of power. Whether they can make or mar will be in the hands of the Tamil electorate.

Chhattisgarh: Additional SP killed in IED bast days before daughter's birthday
Raipur : Akash Rao Girepunje, additional superintendent of police Akash Rao Girepunje was killed in a Naxal-planted IED blast in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district on Monday, just two days before his daughter's sixth birthday. The 42-year-old officer, posted in the insurgency-hit Konta division of Sukma since March 2024, was critically injured when a pressure-IED exploded during a patrol in the Konta area. He succumbed at a hospital shortly after. Two other police personnel were also injured in the explosion. Girepunje, a native of Raipur, had planned to visit his in-laws' house in Bhandara, Maharashtra, for his daughter's birthday on June 11. 'He had promised his daughter he would be there, no matter what,' said his younger brother, Adarsh Girepunje. 'We never imagined that his recent visit home on May 20 for his son's birthday would be our last meeting.' Adarsh, an MBBS graduate preparing for post-graduation, recalled receiving a call at around 9:30 AM on Monday from his brother's security staff informing him about the blast. 'At first, I was told he was injured. But just half an hour later, I got the devastating news that he was no more,' he said. Girepunje is survived by his wife Sneha, their two children—a 7-year-old son and a 6-year-old daughter—and his elderly parents. His father, Govind Rao Girepunje, runs a small garage in Raipur. Akash was the second among five siblings. A commerce graduate from a government college in 2004, Girepunje had aspired to become a government officer since childhood. He prepared for the UPSC in Delhi, clearing the preliminary exam four times but failing to crack the mains. He cleared the Chhattisgarh Public Service Commission exam in 2008 and was appointed Deputy Superintendent of Police in 2013. He also cleared public service exams in multiple states and briefly worked in a nationalised bank before joining the police. 'Bhaiya had a passion for teaching and mentoring UPSC aspirants. He inspired two of our cousins to take up civil services preparation,' Adarsh said. Known for his fearless service in Naxal-hit regions like Mohla-Manpur and Konta, Girepunje was instrumental in establishing new police camps and strengthening security infrastructure. 'Fighting Naxalites was not just a job for him, it was a mission. He never flinched in the face of danger,' Adarsh added. Girepunje's mortal remains were brought to Raipur and taken to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Memorial Hospital for post-mortem. A large crowd gathered at his Kushalpur residence to pay their final respects. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, who postponed his scheduled visit to Rajnandgaon, visited Girepunje's family and paid tributes. 'He showed unmatched courage and dedication to his duty. His sacrifice will not go in vain,' the CM said in an official statement. The CM later chaired a high-level meeting to review anti-Naxal operations and also visited a private hospital to check on the condition of the two injured officers. He was accompanied by senior state officials including Forest Minister Kedar Kashyap, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Manoj Pingua, DGP Arun Dev Gautam, and ADG (Anti-Naxal Operations) Vivekanand Sinha.
