Michelle Obama's relationship advice for her daughters: 'Date a lot'

Business Insider12 hours ago
Michelle Obama isn't afraid of a little trial-and-error, even when it comes to relationships.
During the Wednesday episode of her "IMO" podcast, which she cohosts with her brother, Craig Robinson, Obama spoke about dating and the guidance she shares with her two daughters regarding matters of the heart.
Her main piece of advice? Date a lot.
"I just try to get them to stay open to people, right?" Obama told Robinson. "The thing that I did do was date a lot. And so when Barack showed up, I had experiences to compare him against. Like, I knew a lot of the 'I didn't like this, I didn't like that.'"
Obama said she and her husband, Barack Obama, often shared stories from their own dating past to help their daughters learn what to look for and what to avoid.
"My whole thing is, date a lot. And if you run into a bad date or have a bad experience, move on quickly. Don't stay around. It's like, if it's not working, next," Obama said.
In 2023, Obama said that it took her some time to get used to her and her husband's different love languages. He is more verbally and physically affectionate, while she prefers acts of service and quality time, she said.
"One of the things that's different in how we show love is that because his family lived far away, and traveled a lot, he had to learn to love at a distance," Obama said. In contrast, her family was "always together."
Dating coaches and relationship therapists shared their top dating tips with Business Insider in 2022. These included strategies like starting a date with a compliment, practicing flirting with eyes, and ending a first date with a subtle "accidental" touch.
A representative for Obama did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent by Business Insider outside regular hours.

The deal includes season two of "With Love, Meghan," a holiday special, and new As Ever products. Related video Here's everything we know about Harry and Meghan's future with Netflix so far. A new phase with Netflix Archewell Productions' new agreement with Netflix is slightly different than the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's 2020 deal with the streamer, which was reported to have granted Netflix exclusive rights to the couple's film and TV work for $100 million. Instead, Netflix will essentially have first dibs on any film or television project Archewell creates, but Harry and Meghan will also be able to shop the projects to other companies if Netflix chooses not to pick them up. Eric Charbonneau/Archewell Foundation via Getty Images Netflix similarly transitioned its exclusive deal with Barack and Michelle Obama's production company, Higher Ground, into a multiyear, first-look deal in 2024, indicating a larger shift in strategy for the streamer. In July, multiple outlets reported that Archewell and Netflix's original deal wouldn't be renewed, leading to questions about Harry and Meghan's future with the streamer, though neither company ever confirmed the reports. Still, while the Duke and Duchess' docuseries "Harry & Meghan" and Meghan's lifestyle series "With Love, Meghan" performed well on Netflix, some of their other projects, like the docuseries "Polo" and "Live to Lead," didn't hit with viewers. In addition to the first-look deal, Netflix will continue to partner with Meghan on As Ever, her lifestyle business. The brand released its first rosés over the summer, and it has more drops with new products coming later this year. What's next from Archewell and Netflix Netflix and Archewell Productions are developing multiple projects together, including season two of "With Love, Meghan," which will premiere in August. Netflix said that the lifestyle series had become its "most-watched culinary show" since it aired in March 2025, amassing over 5 million viewers. Like season one, season two will see Meghan cooking and working on DIY projects with special guests, though Netflix has yet to announce who will appear in the coming episodes. In December, Netflix and Archewell will also release "With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration," a holiday special. Meghan Markle on "With Love, Meghan." Netflix Although Archewell Productions is Harry and Meghan's media company, Netflix's investment in "With Love, Meghan" and As Ever aligns with the divide-and-conquer strategy the Duke and Duchess seem to have adopted in the past year, with Harry focusing on philanthropic endeavors while Meghan leans into her lifestyle era. Harry was largely absent from "With Love, Meghan," which experts told Business Insider was a wise move from the duchess. In addition to Meghan's show, Netflix will air "Masaka Kids, A Rhythm Within," a documentary short produced by Campfire Studios in association with Archewell Productions, in the second half of 2025. Archewell Productions is also working on "Meet Me at the Lake," a film adaptation of Carley Fortune's bestselling novel of the same name. The production company bought the rights to the film back in 2023, though it hasn't announced any updates, like a director, screenwriter, cast, or release date, since.

Chappell Roan's hit song 'The Subway' has sparked a tourism boom in Saskatchewan

A Canadian province is experiencing a tourism boost after being named in Chappell Roan's new single. Searches for Saskatchewan, a prairie province, were up after it was featured in "The Subway." The Tourism Saskatchewan CEO said recognition from the famous pop star was "like a gift from heaven." A frequently overlooked Canadian province is seeing a surge in tourism interest thanks to America's favorite Midwest Princess. Chappell Roan, the pop star known for her drag queen-inspired aesthetic, referenced Saskatchewan — known for its sunsets and wheat production — in her latest hit single, "The Subway." On the track, she vows to move to the prairie province in central Canada if she can't get over her heartbreak in New York City. After Roan released the song and the subsequent music video on July 31, not only did Saskatchewan see its first spike in the US Google Trends in two years, but the province's tourism board has since seen around 50,000 interactions with its social media accounts and webpage. "We don't normally get this kind of publicity from an artist that's at the peak of their popularity," Jonathan Potts, CEO of Tourism Saskatchewan, told Business Insider. "This is like a gift from heaven." Potts said that in any given year, about 10% of the province's visitors come from the US, mostly for opportunities to fish, hunt, and stargaze, thanks to the rising demand in astrotourism. "I can see why we could be a cure for heartbreak," Potts added. "We only have a population of around 1.2 million people, we have sunshine and plenty of wide open space, and we have the darkest sky preserve just across the Montana border, free from any sound and light pollution." It's certainly not the first time a pop culture reference has put a tourism destination on the map. Montana and Wyoming experienced a surge in tourism thanks to the popularity of the TV show "Yellowstone," while HBO's "Game of Thrones" caused a tourism boost in Northern Ireland and Croatia, with fans visiting filming locations. Amir Eylon, president and CEO of Longwoods International, a market research consultancy specializing in the travel tourism industry, said music references can have the same effect. "Travel is an emotional thing," Eylon said, adding that if fans "feel a connection to that song or that piece of art, they're going to want to explore that place and see if they can feel that same connection within the destination." Saskatchewan embraces itself as a cure for heartbreak The sudden interest in Saskatchewan comes at a time when the relationship between the US and Canada is strained by the Trump administration's tariffs and the president's repeated comments about making the US's northern neighbor the 51st state of the US. Since March, Canadians have boycotted US-made products and canceled trips to the States in favor of Central American and European destinations. According to Statistics Canada, return flights of Canadian residents from the US saw a 22% decline year-over-year in June, while resident return trips by automobile from the US also fell by 33% in the same month. The decline doesn't seem to be caused by a lack of interest in traveling. In June, Statistics Canada, the national statistical office of Canada, reported a 7% increase in international travel compared to the same month in 2024. If you are an American in need of a cure for heartbreak, or just someone living in Montana and North Dakota seeking a quick escape, Saskatchewan welcomes everyone with open arms, Potts said. Tourism Saskatchewan's page now has a list of travel recommendations based on Chappell Roan songs, ranging from the cheerleader-vibe "HOT TO GO!" for the Mosaic Stadium, to "Red Wine Supernova" for Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park, where you are guaranteed a sky full of stars. Eylon said Saskatchewan was smart to capitalize on the moment, calling it a "fun, unique opportunity" to introduce the destination to Americans who may not be familiar with the province. "Travel is transformational," he said. "Showing that Saskatchewan can be a transformational destination for those who are seeking change could be a great vein to tap into with their marketing." If you are visiting Saskatchewan, whether you are a fan of Roan or not, Potts offers the biggest travel tip: dress appropriately for the season. "We're warm, welcoming people, and we are a very diverse place, with very clear seasons," said Potts. "From the biggest skies to the largest collection of Picasso linocuts, we will help you find something fantastic to do." Fans online also drew a connection between Roan's breakout 2023 album, "The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess," to Saskatchewan's similarities with the American Midwest. Apparently, "Midwest Princesses know no borders," as one comment on a Tourism Saskatchewan post read. Read the original article on Business Insider
