Nitish Kumar hails Bihar's free electricity scheme, benefiting 1.89 crore consumers

Time of India2 days ago
Patna: Bihar Chief Minister
Nitish Kumar
on Tuesday interacted via video conferencing with electricity consumers from multiple districts to discuss the state's free power scheme, which provides up to 125 units of electricity at no cost.
The initiative, he said, has been a "revolutionary step" in improving the lives of ordinary citizens.
"Free electricity up to 125 units is benefiting 1.89 crore consumers in Bihar. It is a revolutionary step for the welfare of the common people of Bihar. We are also promoting solar energy - it is now installed on all government buildings, and if any consumer wishes to install it at home, the government will help," CM Nitish said.
Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary noted that, unlike other states, where exceeding the subsidised limit by even one unit triggers charges on the entire bill, Bihar's policy bills consumers only for the units used above 125.
"The Bihar government under the leadership of CM Nitish Kumar is giving a total electricity subsidy of Rs 20,000 crore," he said.
Bihar Energy Minister Vijendra Yadav appealed to residents to use electricity responsibly.
"Don't misuse electricity if you are getting it free," he cautioned.
The state has begun depositing the July subsidy amount directly into consumer accounts, with August consumption under 125 units also exempt from recharge. To engage the public, special awareness programs are being held at 3,000 locations across Bihar.
During Tuesday's interaction, around 15 lakh consumers shared their feedback and experiences with the Chief Minister. The main event was held at the auditorium of the Energy Department in Patna, where CM Nitish, Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary, Energy Minister Yadav, Additional Chief Secretary S Siddhartha, Secretary to the Chief Minister Kumar Ravi, Patna divisional Commissioner Chandrashekher Singh, Patna DM Tyagarajan SM and many other dignitaries were present.
The government has redesigned electricity bills to feature CM Nitish's photo, seen as both an information tool and a political image-building measure.

PCMC recovers 167cr property tax in amnesty period

Navi Mumbai: Panvel City Municipal Corporation recovered Rs 167 crore property tax paid by 60,082 property holders. Since the launch of the amnesty scheme, 37,519 property owners have taken 90% fine exemption with a day left (Aug 15) and collectively availed Rs 64.8 crore. A protest was held on Wednesday on the property tax. The scheme was effective from July 18 to Sept 20 but split into four tiers. Those clearing their outstanding property tax between Aug 16 and Aug 31 would get 75% rebate, between Sept 1 and Sept 10 would get 50% discount and from Sept 11 to Sept 20, a 25% waiver of the fine amount. Thousands hit the streets in Panvel to take part in a protest rally covering about 1 km between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk and PCMC head office. Seven major political parties besides various social and other forums joined the protest terming the property tax levied as unlawful, impractical and intended to divert public attention. Kharghar Colony Forum president, Leena Garad, had appealed to the residents not to pay the property taxes even under the amnesty scheme. Later, leaders jointly handed over a memorandum to the PCMC chief, Mangesh Chitale. Talking to the media, Patil alleged that the ruling party had promised to not hike any tax for five years but started collecting the property tax with fine/interest. There is no rebate offered on the basic property tax but the amnesty scheme launched is only to provide relief on the fines/interest amounts. The parties have alleged that despite PCMC being a 'D' class municipal corporation, the property tax levied is equivalent to that of 'A' class civic body like Mumbai. IGMC faces dry taps as Shimla's water supply collapses

North Shimla, Aug 14 (UNI) The Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) and other hospitals in Shimla are bracing for severe water shortage after heavy rain, flash floods, and rising turbidity crippled all major pumping stations supplying the city. Authorities have warned that IGMC could run dry as total water intake on Thursday plummeted to just 3.76 MLD against the normal 22 MLD. Hospital administrations have issued orders to halt washing activities, use stored water only for drinking, and rely on rainwater for hygiene purposes. 'We do not maintain separate storage, and supply is made directly to maintain pressure in all distribution tanks. With negligible intake today, Shimla will not get water,' said Sahil Sharma, spokesperson for Shimla Jal Prabandhan Nigam Limited (SJPNL). The crisis has also hit around 192 other water schemes across Himachal Pradesh, with estimated damage to water infrastructure pegged at Rs 600–700 crore. The inauguration function will be held at the Jessore Road metro station of the Yellow Line in the northern suburbs of the city The Esplanade-Sealdah Metro section will finally complete the East-West Metro line, linking it to the existing Howrah Maidan-Esplanade and Sector V-Sealdah stretches. The new 4.39-kilometre extended stretch of the Orange Line from Hemanta Mukhopadhyay to Beleghata will serve four new stations, improving access for residents in areas like VIP Bazar, Ritwik Ghatak (Topsia), Barun Sengupta (Science City), and Beleghata. The Noapara-Jai Hind (Biman Bandar) section will introduce four new stations — Noapara, Dum Dum Cantonment, Jessore Road, and Jai Hind Bimanbandar—with a mix of elevated and underground tracks, providing a direct metro link to the airport.
