Centre to spend Rs300 crore in setting up 3 horticulture facilities in Maharashtra, says Chouhan
Pune: Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Tuesday announced that Central govt will set up three horticulture facilities for grapes, oranges and pomegranates in Pune, Nagpur and Solapur at a cost of Rs300 crore under its clean plants programme.
These facilities among others will offer farmers healthy saplings for production of disease-free crops.
"State has shown a path to the entire country by producing fine qualities of grapes, pomegranates, oranges, vegetables, and other agricultural produce. Centre will help the farmers increase production and get better returns for their crops," he said while attending an agri hackathon organised at Agriculture College in Pune on Thursday.
Calling Maharashtra the horticulture hub of the country, the minister said during his recent visits to various states, farmers came up with complaints of not getting healthy saplings. "Some private companies are also providing saplings that appear to be healthy, but when the yield comes, some bacteria or viruses are found in them," he said.
He said Centre will set up nine facilities across the country to boost horticulture production, of which three will be in Maharashtra.
"The one in Pune will focus on grapes, while the facilities in Nagpur and Solapur will work on saplings of oranges and pomegranates respectively."
Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, in his speech, said state govt will provide the necessary help to winners of Agri Hackathon so that they can convert their innovations into successful start-ups. "Climate change has affected agriculture production, and the use of technology can address the problem."
Deputy CM Ajit Pawar and state agriculture minister Manikrao Kokate were also present in the event.

The visit intends to facilitate interaction with farmers and provide strategic guidance to enhance the campaign's impact, an official release said. During the visit, the minister will interact with the farmers in Mansanpally and Ramachandraguda villages of the district. Delhi: Dwarka Expressway-Vasant Kunj tunnel approved; full details of mega project
Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta said on Sunday that multiple projects worth ₹24,000 crores have been approved by the centre to reduce pollution and streamline traffic in Delhi and its adjoining areas. This will include a five-km tunnel between Shiv Murti-Mahipalpur (Dwarka Expressway) and Nelson Mandela Road (Vasant Kunj). The projects, which were approved during a recent meeting with Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, will commence from early next year. The tunnel between Dwarka Expressway and Vasant Kunj will be constructed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) at an estimated cost of ₹3,500 crore. The project will include the construction of two underground tubes, with each tube having three lanes, which will offer a signal-free alternate route between South Delhi and Dwarka/Gurugram. Moreover, the tunnel will be equipped with facilities like ventilation, fire safety, CCTV, electro-mechanical systems, surveillance, control rooms, cross passages and emergency exits for efficient travelling. She explained that the tunnel will help in easing traffic congestion on Rangpuri, Dhaula Kuan, Rao Tula Ram Marg, and National Highway 48 (NH-48). The tunnel will also become significant in connecting multiple major expressways including the Delhi Expressway (NE-5), NH-44, NH-10, Delhi-Jaipur Highway (NH-48), and Delhi-Dehradun Expressway (NH-709B) via the Urban Extension Road (UER) and Dwarka Expressway, she added. CM Rekha Gupta called this project, the "foundation for the Delhi of the future," and said the tunnel will give a new direction to infrastructure in the national capital and bring relief to millions of citizens. Somanna urges Karnataka govt to reconsider dropped railways projects
Mysuru: Union minister of state for railways V Somanna, on Sunday urged Karnataka govt to reconsider its decision to drop the Chamarajanagar–Hejjala and Mysuru–Kushalnagar railway projects. Following a review meeting with Mysuru division railway officials, Somanna said he wrote to the state urging it to take up both projects and plans to personally follow up with chief minister Siddaramaiah in the next 15 days. "State govt earlier returned both proposals citing an inability to implement them," the Union minister said. "I've since written requesting a reconsideration. I also spoke to Chamarajanagar MP Sunil Bose and Mysuru district minister HC Mahadevappa, but there has been no progress so far. I will increase pressure and ensure that these projects are approved at the earliest. Developmental initiatives should go beyond party lines. " On electrification progress between Mysuru and Chamarajanagar, he said only a 1.2km stretch near Kadakola, close to Mysuru airport, remains incomplete. He said this is due to "technical challenges". He expressed satisfaction with the current pace of work and reaffirmed the central govt's commitment to improving regional connectivity. He praised chief minister Siddaramaiah for his cooperation in land acquisition matters, which enabled significant railway infrastructure progress in Karnataka. "Karnataka is seeing the implementation of 13 major projects worth around Rs 39,000 crore, including the Rayadurga–Tumakuru, Tumakuru–Davanagere, Kuduchi–Gadag, and Gadag–Wadi lines," he said. "Under the Viksit Bharat initiative, a greenfield corridor is being planned in Tumakuru, which will connect major factories directly via rail. This move is expected to drastically reduce transportation costs—from Rs 13/km by road to Rs 6–7/km by rail."
