KUCHING (Aug 17): The Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) Technical Committee meeting tomorrow will discuss Sarawak's demand to use English as the medium of instruction for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), said Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.
The Deputy Prime Minister said one of the challenges in fulfilling this demand is ensuring uniformity of curriculum nationwide.
'We have a national policy which applies across Malaysia. So if Sarawak moves away from this policy, there may no longer be uniformity.
'So we will have to find a way to facilitate Sarawak's demand to use English in the learning of STEM,' he said when met by reporters after attending a function at Jalan Sultan Tengah here today.
When asked whether this demand is in line with the Dual Language Programme (DPL) being implemented in Sarawak, Fadillah said: 'That will be among the matters to be discussed tomorrow.'
He added that another matter that will also be deliberated is the proposed Sarawak Cancer Centre.
Recently, Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the development of the Sarawak Cancer Centre will be tabled and discussed at MA63 Committee meeting tomorrow.
The state Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister said discussions with the Sarawak Health Department had also been held to ensure the centre's planning meets the actual needs of end-users.
According to Dr Sim, the proposed plan has been finalised, as Sarawak is going to build a hospital.
'As for the number of beds, I stated during the meeting in April that Sarawak specialists and Sarawak General Hospital had proposed 310, so I am sticking to that figure. I strongly support them because 200 beds will not be enough,' he said.
On Saturday, Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong called for an update on the proposed Sarawak Cancer Centre, urging the Sarawak government to keep Sarawakians informed.
The Democratic Action Party lawmaker added that the centre, recently discussed at the federal level, is a life-saving necessity rather than a luxury.

Saifuddin dismisses washing machine claims on Zara's death

KUALA LUMPUR: Justice for Zara Qairina Mahathir should not be based on half-baked facts or reckless, irresponsible allegations. The case of a teacher spreading fake news claiming Zara had been murdered after being put into a washing machine is a case in point, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. He said the police's investigation is grounded in facts and legitimate legal procedures. "Justice and truth must be based on facts and a legitimate legal process. It cannot be founded on half-baked facts or irresponsible, baseless accusations. It must rest on facts and the proper legal process. "We reject any attempt to play up political sentiments, or to make malicious speculation and accusations. "There was a case of a teacher who created content claiming Zara was murdered in a washing machine. When we interrogated her, she said, 'I just want to make content,'" said the English teacher. "We have arrested (the teacher) and, God willing, if the Attorney-General agrees, she will be charged. But that content was swallowed whole by a large part of the people, inside and outside the Dewan, which led to swelling sentiments and forming a wave," he said in his ministerial statement. A 39-year-old woman was arrested in Rawang earlier this month for investigations over fake news involving Zara's death.

Detained teacher put up TikTok ‘to make content' about Zara Qairina, says Saifuddin Naution

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have detained a teacher who produced a TikTok video claiming Zara Qairina Mahathir was killed by being put into a washing machine, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail reveals. 'When questioned, the English teacher said it was just to 'make content'. 'Yet the way the sentence was structured made it appear as though that was the actual cause of death. 'Shockingly, the content was swallowed whole by many people inside and outside of this Parliament. This is how dangerous it becomes,' he told the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (Aug 18). He cautioned against politicising the case or fuelling speculation, reiterating that only verified evidence could form the basis of justice. 'We reject any attempt to play up political sentiment or spread malicious allegations. 'Demands and accusations must be backed by evidence, not half-baked facts or irresponsible claims. 'The police are committed to uncovering the truth and upholding justice,' Saifuddin added. Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel for breaking news alerts and key updates!

Home minister: Justice for Zara Qairina must be based on facts, not baseless claims

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 — Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail today stressed that justice for the death of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir must be pursued based on facts and the rule of law. Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat, he said it could not be built on half-baked information or irresponsible, baseless allegations. 'In this matter, there is a common ground among all of us. We want to seek the truth and we want to uphold justice. This is the motivation that brings us together. Justice and truth must be based on facts and a legitimate legal process. 'It cannot be founded on half-baked facts or irresponsible, baseless accusations. It must rest on facts and the proper legal process,' he said in his speech when delivering the minister's statement. 'We reject any attempt to play up political sentiments, or to make malicious speculation and accusations,' he added. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had also earlier today reminded all parties not to turn the death of any bullying victim into a political weapon. This comes after tens of thousands rallied nationwide in a powerful show of solidarity over the unsolved death of Zara Qairina. Saifuddin cited an example of an English teacher who made a TikTok video falsely claiming that Zara had been murdered after being put into a washing machine. 'When we interrogate, why must it be done like that? 'I just want to make content,' said the English teacher. 'We have arrested [the teacher] and, God willing, if the Attorney-General agrees, will be charged,' he revealed. Saifuddin however regretted how that contact was swallowed whole by many in the public, even among some MPs, which he said led to swelling negative sentiments. 'This is where I must say that we cannot rely on emotional sentiment,' he stressed. Earlier, the Kota Kinabalu's Coroner's Court had fixed September 3 for the start of the inquest into the death of Zara Qairina to determine any criminal elements. Lawyer for the family, Hamid Ismail, said that the inquest will be heard before coroner judge Azreena Aziz and could involve up to 195 witnesses, though the final number will be determined by the Attorney General's Chambers.
