Nurturing nature financing
As Singapore's financial sector builds momentum for the wider adoption of nature-related strategies, it will need greater support from non-financial players.
The Singapore Sustainable Finance Association, an industry group recognised by the Monetary Authority of Singapore, has published a guide to help financial institutions get started on nature financing.
At the heart of the nature financing movement is a recognition that nature-based issues present significant risks and opportunities for economies. The guide cited World Bank estimates that global GDP could decrease by US$2.7 trillion in 2030 if certain ecosystem services collapse. An analysis by Singapore government-owned investor Temasek figured that more than 60 per cent of GDP in the Asia-Pacific relies directly or indirectly on nature and ecosystem services.
On the opportunities front, the World Economic Forum sees US$4.3 trillion in business and 232 million jobs in Asia by 2030 from the nature transition to reverse negative impacts and restore nature. Globally, the nature transition could unlock US$10 trillion of business opportunities and 395 million jobs over the same period.

'We believe now is a good time for financial institutions to increase their proactivity in nature financing,' the authors write. 'That means understanding the materiality of nature risks and opportunities, embedding these considerations in internal processes and pursuing new business opportunities. In doing so, financial institutions will both address nature degradation in the real economy and grow their businesses.'
So why aren't banks rushing to provide nature financing?
The short answer is that it's hard right now to know what an acceptable level of nature performance is. One of the 2030 targets under the internationally recognised Kunming-Montreal Global Diversity Framework is to conserve at least 30 per cent of water areas, including marine and coastal ecosystems. But that number needs to be translated for local circumstances to work.
What is sorely needed is policy support to lay down locally contextualised nature targets and pathways. Without science-based zoning policies and nature transition strategies to guide the way, the financial sector will struggle to provide capital efficiently. Investments will have to price in the risk of being on the wrong side of eventual policy, and of reputational damage from critics calling for more stringent standards.
Policy guidance is also needed to resolve competing demands for resources with other developmental goals. For example, building utility-scale solar farms or mining minerals needed for batteries or agriculture can all harm local ecosystems. Banks and investors can support a national strategy for allocating natural capital, but shouldn't be the ones creating that strategy.
More importantly, financiers and businesses need confidence that the real-world outcomes of their activities are positive, and that's not possible without deliberate system-wide plans.
Industry sectors also need to step up. While policymakers can set jurisdictional targets, industry players need to commit to aligning with those targets. Guidance on best practices and the transition away from nature-negative operations should be a coordinated effort.
Both industry and government need to work together on creating better datasets. Doing so will facilitate the development of assessment models that can better price nature risks and opportunities.
The challenges are not trivial, but that's always true at the beginning. There are low-hanging fruit where banks and investors can start.
Some aspects of nature are better understood and developed than others. In Singapore, for example, water efficiency has been a national priority for decades, which means that policies and data are already in place to enable the financing of water-related projects.
In some ways, it shouldn't take much for businesses to understand the materiality of nature, especially in sectors such as agriculture, mining and real estate.
Compared with climate change, some of the impacts from changes to natural systems can be detected in shorter time frames and more visible ways. Fishermen know when there's overfishing because catches shrink, for instance.
Compared with climate change, nature-related issues are often local. Biodiversity loss in Australia doesn't affect biodiversity in Argentina. However, greenhouse gas emissions in Australia will certainly affect temperatures in Argentina and Angola.
This means that the levers for many nature-related issues are local as well; a company that protects the local ecosystem on its properties in Australia doesn't have to worry about whether its efforts will be undermined by what someone in Argentina is doing. This is very different from climate change, where the willingness to mitigate emissions is often affected by whether other countries are pulling their weight.
The point is that nature financing will be a long journey, and starting now will allow early adopters to develop effective systems and processes through gradual evolution rather than in a more disruptive way in the future.

Investors need to take the next step
The Asia Investor Group on Climate Change (AIGCC) polled 230 major Asian investors and found Singapore investors behind their regional peers in a number of areas.
Those were:
Linking board remuneration to climate performance;
Disclosing climate transition plans;
Having biodiversity or nature disclosures and strategies;
Disclosing physical risks or adaptation actions; and
Advocating for climate policy and regulation.
However, Singapore investors were ahead when it came to:
Recognition of climate risks and opportunities;
Conducting advanced climate scenario analysis; and
Setting policies on fossil fuels or other high-emitting sectors.
One limitation with the poll is that the lack of disclosure does not mean the absence of something. It was a well-known issue in the early days of corporate governance development in Singapore. Singapore-listed companies did not do so well in some rankings early on because they did not mention certain governance aspects in their disclosures, even though those aspects were quite basic, and the expectation was that they were being done.
It's possible that some of that is happening here, especially with industry wariness about getting accused of greenwashing. The less you say, the less that critics can scrutinise, goes the thinking.
But taking the findings at face value, it suggests that Singapore investors have quite a bit of catching up to do when it comes to turning climate risk and opportunity assessments into action.
Acknowledging climate risks and opportunities and conducting climate scenario analyses are kind of the early steps in formulating climate strategies. You start with an internal review, you engage with portfolio companies and limited partners, and then you figure out what's at risk, and where it's possible to make money.
And then, it seems, quite a number of Singapore investors just stop there. A number of them don't appear to take the next step, and formulate plans to address those risks and opportunities, and then hold the firms' leadership accountable for carrying out those plans.
That might be short-sighted. If you've spent all that money doing the analysis, at least make use of it.

[NEW YORK] Current and former OpenAI employees plan to sell approximately US$6 billion worth of shares to an investor group that includes Thrive Capital, SoftBank Group and Dragoneer Investment Group, in a deal that values the ChatGPT maker at US$500 billion, according to sources familiar with the matter. The talks are early and the size of the share sale could still change, said the sources, who asked not to be identified discussing private information. The secondary share investment is on top of SoftBank's commitment to lead OpenAI's US$40 billion funding round, which values the company at US$300 billion, according to another source familiar with the deal. That round remains ongoing, with OpenAI recently securing US$8.3 billion from a syndicate of investors. Representatives for Dragoneer and Thrive did not respond to requests for comment. Spokespeople for OpenAI and SoftBank declined to comment. All three firms are existing OpenAI backers. The secondary share sale will give OpenAI employees a chance to get cash-rich amid a high-stakes talent war in the artificial intelligence (AI) industry. Companies such as Meta Platforms are offering massive salaries to recruit AI talent from OpenAI and other startups. This year, several OpenAI employees have exited for Meta, including Shengjia Zhao, a co-creator of ChatGPT. Allowing employees to sell shares is an important tool for startups trying to retain top talent, without requiring the company to go public or be acquired. In some cases, early investors also use these deals to sell down their stakes, though OpenAI investors are not eligible to do so in this round, according to a source familiar with the matter. Current and former employees who spent at least two years at the company are able to participate. With its participation in the share sale, as well as its previous commitments, SoftBank is making a pivotal bet on the success of OpenAI. In addition to those deals, the Japanese conglomerate headed by Masayoshi Son recently closed a separate US$1 billion purchase of OpenAI employee shares at a US$300 billion valuation, according to a source familiar with the matter. Negotiations for that deal started before talks around the US$500 billion secondary valuation began, they said. The US$500 billion valuation would make OpenAI the world's most valuable startup, surpassing Elon Musk's SpaceX. The company expects revenue to triple this year to US$12.7 billion, up from US$3.7 billion in 2024, Bloomberg has reported. And the secondary deal talks come on the heels of the release of its highly-anticipated GPT-5 model. This week, OpenAI chief Sam Altman sat down with a group of reporters and shared his vision for the company, including that it wants to spend trillions of US dollars on the infrastructure required to run AI services in the 'not very distant future.' [SINGAPORE] Oil prices slipped in early Asian trade on Monday as the United States did not exert more pressure on Russia to end the Ukraine war by implementing further measures to disrupt Moscow's oil exports after presidents from both countries met on Friday. Brent crude futures dropped 32 cents, or 0.49 per cent, to US$65.53 a barrel by 2213 GMT while US West Texas Intermediate crude was at US$62.57 a barrel, down 23 cents. US President Donald Trump met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday and emerged more aligned with Moscow on seeking a peace deal instead of a ceasefire first. Trump will meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and European leaders on Monday to strike a quick peace deal to end Europe's deadliest war in 80 years. 'What was primarily in play were the secondary tariffs targeting the key importers of Russian energy, and President Trump has indeed indicated that he will pause pursuing incremental action on this front, at least for China,' RBC Capital analyst Helima Croft said in a note. 'The status quo remains largely intact for now,' she said, adding that Moscow will not walk back on territorial demands while Ukraine and some European leaders will balk at the land-for-peace deal. GOLD has long held its place as a strategic asset, valued not just for its scarcity and durability, but also for its reliability in times of macroeconomic stress. Historically, it has served as a hedge against inflation, currency volatility and geopolitical risk. From central bank reserves to exchange-traded fund holdings and option strategies, gold spans retail and institutional layers of finance. In today's environment, where uncertainty around the US Federal Reserve's policy and global trade dynamics continues to mount, gold remains firmly in focus for both institutional investors and retail traders. Heading into the second half of 2025, gold appears to be at a technical inflection point. After rallying sharply in the first quarter of 2025 amid global economic uncertainty and aggressive central bank buying, XAU/USD is now trading within a tight range. The key question here is: can the bulls maintain control, or is the bullish momentum starting to fade? Technical landscape: chart set-up and price action XAU/USD is consolidating within a range between US$3,245 and US$3,445. This price action forms an ascending triangle, typically considered a bullish continuation pattern in an uptrend. Bullish scenario Supported by the earlier occurrence of a golden cross, the 50-day SMA is currently trading above the 100-day SMA. With the price of XAU/USD trading above both SMAs, it reinforces the trend strength and suggests that dips continue to attract buyers. A decisive breakout above US$3,445 could open the path towards the US$3,500 to US$3,600 resistance zone. If a clean close is seen above the US$3,500 resistance level along with rising volume, this will confirm renewed upward momentum in XAU/USD. Swing traders may look to US$3,600 as a take-profit target. One of the fundamental reasons is the reigniting of global trade concerns by US President Donald Trump's new tariffs on over 20 countries, including Canada and Brazil. Such tensions typically fuel demand for safe-haven assets, especially if retaliatory measures disrupt supply chains. Additionally, central banks have added 50 tonnes of gold in the second quarter of 2025 led by China, India and Mexico (Bullion Mart, 2025). With 2025 expected to be the 16th consecutive year of net central bank gold buying, this structural demand remains a key stabilising factor for the market. Bearish scenario A loss of slope in the 50-day SMA, currently near US$3,330, would be an early signal of weakening short-term bullish momentum. A breakdown of the 50-day SMA below the 100-day SMA, a 'death cross', would represent a structural shift. Technical traders often interpret a fall below both moving averages as confirmation of a developing downtrend, prompting reallocation away from gold. A breakdown below US$3,245 may be compounded by macroeconomic signals that strengthen the US dollar and weigh on gold. If geopolitical tensions ease, the US Dollar Index could regain strength, while the US 10-year yield remains elevated near 4.42 per cent; a hawkish cut from the Fed could push yields higher. Rising yields will increase the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets like gold, especially for institutional portfolios seeking income. The XAU/USD current technical set-up reflects a balanced market, with the bulls defending key support zones and bears capping upside momentum. This aligns with a broader tug-of-war between structural bullish forces and bearish risks. A decisive break above US$3,445 could reignite the rally towards US$3,500 while a drop below US$3245 would shift the sentiment towards bearish. Until either scenario unfolds, traders may see a continued range-bound action between the US$3,245 and US$3,445 levels.
