Beta Band reform for new tour after 21 years away
They released two further albums Hot Shots II in 2001 and Heroes to Zeros in 2004.
The band said: "The Beta Band, as everyone knows, is an institution, like Bedlam, or the RSPCA, and as such has its own indelible stain on the bedsheet of Western culture. "It was the great John Noakes who said 'you have to shake it out at least once every couple of decades, if you want to know what the moths did.' "So with both those facts in mind, we realise the time has come to show the wall the Luminol, kill the lights and hit the UV."The line-up for the tour will be Steve Mason on guitar and vocals, Richard Greentree on bass, John Maclean on samples and keyboards and Robin Jones on drums.Their music featured in Hollywood film High Fidelity, where their track Dry the Rain was spotlighted by the main character, played by John Cusack. After the band split following an Edinburgh gig in December 2004, Mason released music as a solo artist while Maclean and Jones formed another band, the Aliens.Maclean also moved into film, directing Slow West in 2015 and this year's Tornado, which opened the Glasgow Film Festival last week.

What's Happening!! actress Danielle Spencer dies aged 60
Former child star Danielle Spencer has died of cancer aged 60. The American actress was best known for playing Dee Thomas in the sitcom What's Happening!!, which ran from 1976 until 1979. After being diagnosed with breast cancer and undergoing a double mastectomy in 2014, she then faced emergency surgery to relieve bleeding on her brain four years later. It was announced this week that she had died in hospital in Richmond, Virginia, however a cause of death is yet to be shared. 'Dr. Dee, our brilliant, loving, positive, pragmatic warrior, without fail, has finally found her release from the clutches of this world and a body. We celebrate Danielle Spencer and her contributions as we regret to inform her departure and transition from a long battle with cancer,' her friend and former co-star Haywood Nelson wrote on Instagram. 'We have lost a daughter, sister, family member, What's Happening!! cast member, veterinarian, animal rights proponent and healer, and cancer heroine. Our Shero. Danielle is loved. Born in the Bronx, New York, in 1965, Spencer began acting classes aged seven and was cast in What's Happening!! four years later. The show was loosely based on the film Cooley High and although it was originally only planned to air during one summer, it performed so well in its time slot a full season was greenlit. During the production of the season 2 episode Trial and Error in September 1977, Spencer and her stepfather Tim Pelt were involved in a severe car accident that left her in a coma for three weeks and caused his death. Pelt's fatal injuries were caused by trying to protect Spencer during the crash. She had no memories of the accident and spent six months recovering and undergoing physical therapy. After the series was cancelled in 1979, Spencer and her mother temporarily relocated to Africa. When they returned, she enrolled at the University of California-Davis, where she studied veterinary medicine. However, after syndicated reruns of the 65 What's Happening!! episodes rated well, a sequel series was ordered. Travis Kelce compares Taylor Swift to his mum as he shares details on their romance
Travis Kelce has opened up on his relationship with Taylor Swift, saying he wants to 'do good in the world' and be a 'role model' as he is 'influencing' people NFL superstar Travis Kelce has expressed his desire to use the heightened media attention, courtesy of his relationship with pop sensation Taylor Swift, to do "good in the world". The 35 year old Kansas City Chiefs tight end has been under the spotlight since he started dating Swift, who recently announced her 12th studio album, The Life Of A Showgirl. In a candid chat with British GQ, Kelce opened up about dealing with increased media scrutiny: "You can't block that (attention) out. If someone says something that they don't like about you, you have to be able to understand how you are portraying yourself for them to say that. "I don't want anyone to say anything negative about me. Some people don't give a toss. I'm someone who does care. I do want people to look at me like I'm doing good in the world, I'm influencing and using my platform for the better, being a role model, being somebody that has done it the right way." Despite this, Kelce admitted he wasn't bothered by being labelled a "meathead jock", even finding it amusing, and believes that "acting like you're the smartest one in the room just isn't the way to go". Apart from being the boyfriend of the 35-year-old Shake It Off singer, Kelce also confessed to being a "fan" of her music and enjoys watching her attend his matches. The American footballer went on to speak about Swift's similarities to his mother Donna, adding: "Their kindness, their genuineness, their ability to say hello to everyone in the room. "Their ability to show love and support no matter what. And on top of that, their work ethic. I saw my mother reach goals that she had set for herself, go from being a teller to working all the way up in the KeyBank building. "I've seen Taylor do the exact same thing of setting goals for herself and exceeding the expectations and really captivating the world in that regard." Throughout his NFL journey, Kelce has secured three Super Bowl victories and co-presents the New Heights podcast with his brother Jason, a former NFL star. The complete interview appears in the September edition of British GQ, which can be downloaded digitally or purchased from shops starting Tuesday August 19.

American in UK tries fish and chips but is told they've 'made a mistake'
Sarah Renee, an American who moved to the UK, frequently shares her thoughts on British foods and various UK brands. In her most recent review, she chose to sample the classic dish of fish and chips. Fish and chips, an iconic British dish adored by millions, is a staple in school canteens every Friday and countless shops across the nation specialise in this beloved classic. It seems our friends across the pond are also keen to sample this national treasure, including Sarah Renee, an American expat now living in the UK. Known for her TikTok reviews of British food and popular UK brands like Greggs, SpudBros and Toby Carvery, Sarah recently went on a five-hour journey to Bournemouth to taste the seaside town's famed fish and chips, comparing it to the fare back home in Orange County, Southern California. At Harry Ramsden's, she ordered a large cod with a regular portion of chips, gravy, mushy peas and curry sauce. Firstly, she took a bite of the fish, describing the flavour as "incredible" before dipping some into the gravy, mistakenly thinking it was meant for the fish and not just the chips. Finding the combination "unique", she then sampled the curry sauce with the fish, confessing: "I've never heard of curry and fish and chips but I'm gonna try it anyway." Deciding she preferred the fish with curry sauce over gravy, she next tried a chip dunked in gravy, declaring: "That's much better than the one at the Chinese." Wrapping up her review, Sarah enthused: "Okay this tastes nothing like California fish and chips so this is fantastic. "I'm giving Harry Ramsden a ten out of ten. This is phenomenal." Harry Ramsden's, a renowned fast food chain in the UK, is famed for its fish and chips. Its Bournemouth branch, situated on the seafront, boasts seating for up to 420 diners. While the restaurant 's signature dish is fish and chips, it also offers a variety of other options, including wholetail scampi, a selection of beef, chicken, cod or halloumi burgers and a classic caesar salad. Sarah's TikTok video has sparked more than 1,900 comments, with several viewers suggesting she should have avoided Harry Ramsden's. A local from Bournemouth commented: "I'm from Bournemouth, this is the worst fish and chips you can get. It's a chain restaurant, so many better places to go, always go local. Total tourist trap." Another viewer agreed: "Harry Ramsden's is a chain though, it's even better from an independent chippy." A third chimed in: "I hate to tell you this but Harry Ramsden's is the worst fish and chips going, it's a chain. Try Lakeside in Poole, if you're still in the area! It's the best." A fourth remarked: "Harry Ramsden's is not the best way to try British fish and chips as they're a chain." However, one Harry Ramsden's fan defended the chain: "I went to the exact same restaurant twice a couple of weeks ago because it was sooo good."
