Six Indians miss out on World University Games medal due to alleged gaffe by officials
Alisha Khan, one of the players who were left out, wrote on her Instagram handle that half of the squad couldn't play because officials from the Indian team made a gaffe while submitting their names. 'They only submitted 6, forgetting the rest,' she wrote.
'As per FISU rules, 12 players are allowed—we were all eligible. We traveled, we trained, we sacrificed, and yet we were denied the chance to even participate.'
Alisha further wrote that this was 'career sabotage' and not just mismanagement. 'We demand answers, accountability, and that our voices be heard. We didn't lose a match – we lost our right to even participate,' she wrote Alisha.
Association of Indian University secretary Dr. Pankaj Mittal told PTI that the matter is being investigated but declined from making any further comments. 'We have been informed about this and the matter is being investigated,' he is quoted as saying by the news agency, which further reports that this wasn't just an error but stemmed from systematic irregularities.
Saneeth Dayanand, Sathish Kumar Karunakaran, Devika Sihag, Tasnim Mir, Varshini Viswanath Sri, and Vaishnavi Khadkekar were the six who competed in the mixed team event. India defeated Macau but lost to Hong Kong in the group stage, then beat the USA in the round of 16 and Malaysia in the quarterfinals before losing to Chinese Taipei in the semifinals.
Rohan Kumar, Darshan Pujari, Aditi Bhatt, Abhinash Mohanty, Viraj Kuvale, and Alisha Khan were part of the 12-member squad but did not get to play. Pujari has written to the Badminton Association of India (BAI), demanding a thorough investigation.
'This level of mismanagement has caused significant emotional distress to the affected athletes, especially when Team India went on to win a historic medal at the Games. The players who were left out of the nomination list have been unfairly denied the chance to contribute on the field and be acknowledged as part of this achievement,' he wrote in his email, according to PTI.
'To date, there has been no accountability or concrete explanation provided by the managers. A mere apology cannot suffice at this level of international representation, where the careers, dreams, and morale of athletes are at stake. Through this email, I respectfully urge the concerned authorities to take this matter seriously, conduct a thorough review, and ensure that such avoidable and damaging incidents are never repeated in the future.'

Duckett, Crawley onslaught give England advantage over India
Last Updated: Manchester, Jul 24 (PTI) Ben Duckett enabled England deliver a potential knock-out punch to India with a sizzling 94 as the hosts punished a wayward pace attack to end on 225 for two at stumps on day two of the fourth Test here on Thursday. Openers Duckett (94 off 100) and Zak Crawley (84 off 113) added 166 off 192 balls to put India on the backfoot after the visitors did well to post 358 in the afternoon session. Coming out to bat despite a broken foot, Pant's courageous 54 off 75 balls fuelled India past 350 on a pitch with plenty of seam movement. However, the Indian pace trio of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and debutant Anshul Kamboj was not accurate enough to trouble the England openers who returned to their aggressive ways after shifting gears at Lord's. Far too many freebies were offered on the leg side and England openers, especially Duckett, were happy to oblige. England scored at close to five runs per over while India struck at little over three. It was turning out to be a forgettable debut for Kamboj, a last-minute addition to India's injury-hit squad, before he had the dangerous Duckett caught behind with a length ball that bounced a bit more than usual. India's seam bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur leaked runs, summing up an ordinary day for the quicks in general. England openers batted in sunshine while majority of India's innings was played under overcast conditions. Having said that, due credit should go to Duckett and Crawley, who potentially gave England a decisive advantage in series they lead 2-1. In the second session, Pant struck a courageous fifty on a broken foot while England captain Ben Stokes took his first five-wicket haul in eight years to restrict India to 358 all out. The highlight of the session was Pant making a plucky half-century despite struggling to walk in the middle. Pant sensationally smashed a slower ball from Jofra Archer for a six between mid-wicket and square leg before driving Ben Stokes from the crease for a boundary through cover for a memorable half-century, drawing a standing ovation from a packed stadium. When Archer finally found Pant's stumps with a peach, the significance of Pant's courageous knock was not lost even on the opposition with Joe Root patting the Indian for his valiant effort. Stokes had Kamboj caught behind to complete his five-wicket haul. In the morning session, Pant remarkably came out to bat with a fractured foot while Shardul showed plenty of resolve to take India to 321 for six at lunch. Resuming the day at 264 for four, India did well to cross the 300-run mark in overcast conditions that offered plenty of seam and swing to the England pacers especially Jofra Archer, who was effectively unplayable for majority of his opening spell. England Ben Stokes got the odd ball to jump from length, creating more challenges for the Indian batters. Chris Woakes took the new ball immediately but it was in following over from Archer that England got the early breakthrough. The in-form Ravindra Jadeja (20 off 40) could not do much off an Archer beauty that shaped away after landing on the leg-stump to take the outside edge with Harry Brook holding on to a low catch at second slip. With the ball doing all sorts of tricks, Shardul (41 off 88 ) looked to attack and dispatched Woakes off the backfoot in the cover region for a fine boundary. Minutes later, Shardul creamed a full ball from Stokes through the cover a ball after getting a snorter from the England captain that almost kissed his glove. Stokes managed to get rid of Indian all-rounder eventually by luring him into the drive and getting his caught at gully by Ben Duckett, who pouched the flying ball. Much to the shock of everyone present at the ground, Pant limped out to bat following Shardul's fall. A standing ovation followed. Despite a broken right foot, Pant made a courageous call to face the England pacers. He could barely complete his singles but the fact that he was in the centre said a lot about his grit and character. Early lunch was taken when light rain returned to Old Trafford in fading light. Siraj, who is India's leading wicket-taker in the ongoing 2025 edition of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, lost his cool at England opener Ben Duckett during the third session of the second day's play at Old Trafford in Manchester and got engaged in a verbal fight with him. The clip of Siraj expressing his anger while pointing his fingers at Duckett was shared by Star Sports on X, and within no time it went viral on the internet. History Beckons: India's Koneru Humpy To Meet Divya Deshmukh In FIDE Women's Chess World Cup Final
Grandmaster Koneru Humpy held her nerves to score a come-from-behind victory over China'sTIngjie Lei in the tiebreaker to set up an all-Indian summit clash against Divya Deshmukh at the FIDE Women's World Cup in Batumi, Georgia on Thursday. Humpy will clash with Divya Deshmukh in the final starting after a day's rest starting on Saturday. With Humpy winning, both she and Divya have now qualified for the Women's candidates' tournament next year. Having drawn the first two games in the normal time control Humpy had to settle up with another 1-1 draw in the tiebreaker that comprised two games with 15 minutes for both players with an increment. After two draws here, Humpy had to really work hard in the next set of tiebreak games that had 10 minutes for both players with another increment. Lei got in the lad early in the set of these two games and Humpy erred in the middle game to lose a pawn and get in to a difficult endgame. What followed was pretty logical as Lei got in command and even thought the position was closer to a draw Humpy did not find the best defensive resources to equalize. Humpy lost another pawn on the queen side and despite the presence of opposite coloured Bishops in the endgame, white's influence on both flanks tilted things decisively in her favour. It was a win on demand wherein Humpy dominated the next game. The Queen pawn opening was good enough wherein Humpy was in command right from the word go. Humpy won with her superior technique and also her absolute determination to turn the tide in her favour from any given position. In the third set of tie-break games Humpy drew white in the first game and crushed Lei in all departments of the game. Winning this game meant that just a draw was needed for her to get in to the final and in the return game Humpy was at her technical best as she won again out of an Italian opening. If there is one title that has eluded Humpy it's the World Cup and world championship. Apart that Humpy has won everything under the sun.
