2025 Hall of Fame: Jared Allen was an all-time pass rusher and an even bigger personality
"I'm not sure Canton is ready for this redneck," Allen said.
That's a good way to sum up Allen, who grew up on a horse ranch in California. He was entertaining as a player, with 136 career sacks during stints with the Vikings, Chiefs, Bears and Panthers, and also unapologetically himself. His famous calf roping celebration after sacks was a part of who he was, and maybe the most memorable part of a great career.

"Authenticity. I think I left authenticity," Allen said, when asked during the Hall of Fame "knock" segment what he left the game. "I don't know how to fake anything. It's probably why I can't be a politician."
He did that sack celebration often, as one of the best pass rushers in NFL history.
Jared Allen had an unlikely path
Idaho State had never had a Pro Bowl player in the NFL before Allen. Now the Bengals have a Pro Football Hall of Famer.
Allen was a dominant player at Idaho State but still a bit of a mystery entering the NFL, having played at an FCS program. He was a fourth-round pick of the Chiefs in 2004, at 126th overall.
He'd quickly make a name for himself in the NFL. He had nine sacks as a rookie, giving a glimpse of what was to come. He had 11 sacks his second season and 7.5 his third season but didn't make a Pro Bowl in any of his first three seasons. It took him a while to get his proper due. That would prepare him for his Hall of Fame wait.
Allen did make the Pro Bowl his fourth season when he had an NFL-best 15.5 sacks. That was the first of seven straight seasons with double-digit sacks. Allen's best season was 2011, after he had joined the Vikings, when he led the league with 22 sacks and finished second in the NFL Defensive Player of the Year voting. That season marked his fourth time being a first-team All-Pro.
Usually, 136 sacks, five Pro Bowls and four first-team All-Pro honors over a 12-year career would be enough for a quick election into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. But Allen had to wait a bit.
Allen had to wait for Hall call
When Hutchinson showed up to offer Allen the news, Allen's authentic self came out.
"Longtime overdue," Hutchinson said.
"I agree. I agree," Allen replied. "I thought it was going to be like three years ago."
Allen's 136 sacks are tied for 16th all time. Of the 15 players with more, 14 are in the Hall of Fame and the 15th is Terrell Suggs, who was a finalist in February but wasn't voted in during his first year of eligibility. Allen making it in seemed like an inevitability, though he was passed over the first four times he was on the ballot.
Allen's career had an interesting turn. He was an established star with the Chiefs, but Kansas City traded him to the Vikings for a first-round pick and two third-round picks before the 2008 season. He played six seasons with the Vikings and posted 85.5 sacks for them. He had a memorable legacy with two franchises.
Allen went to the Bears for a little more than a season after leaving the Vikings and, early in the 2015 season, he was traded to the Panthers. Carolina went 15-1 and made the Super Bowl, although it lost to the Broncos in that game. That was Allen's last game. He announced his retirement in a fitting way, posting a video to Twitter of him riding off on the back of a horse.
"Well everyone, I just want to say thank you for an amazing 12-year career," Allen said on the video. "This was the part where I was supposed to ride into the sunset, but since there's no sunset — I'm just going to ride off."
Allen's ride now includes a stop in Canton.

Stetson Bennett throws 2 TD passes, looks sharp in Rams' 31-21 preseason victory over Cowboys

(AP) — Stetson Bennett passed for 188 yards and two touchdowns in a strong start to the preseason, leading the Los Angeles Rams to a 31-21 victory over the Cowboys on Saturday night in new Dallas head coach Brian Schottenheimer's debut. Blake Corum rushed for short TDs to cap the Rams' first two offensive drives behind Bennett, the two-time national champion at the University of Georgia attempting to secure his job as the Rams' third-string quarterback for another season. Looking much sharper than he did a year ago against the Cowboys, Bennett went 16 for 24 and hit Cody Schrader and Brennan Presley for touchdowns in the second half. Bennett's only interception resulted from an exceptional play made by Dallas' Israel Mukuamu on a long pass. Joe Milton passed for 143 yards before injuring his elbow in the fourth quarter of a solid debut with the Cowboys, throwing a touchdown pass to Rivaldo Fairweather with 8:48 to play. The second-year pro, who had one interception while going 17 for 29, is looking to cement his job as Dak Prescott's backup. Will Grier replaced Milton for the final series and rushed for a TD with 2:31 left. Both teams rested as many key players as possible, with Prescott and CeeDee Lamb headlining a host of Cowboys starters on the sideline. Micah Parsons attended the game with his Dallas teammates even after requesting a trade last week during his seemingly interminable contract negotiations with owner Jerry Jones. The Rams didn't even play second-string quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo — but Matthew Stafford, who didn't participate in training camp due to a back injury, went through a lengthy workout before the game ahead of his anticipated return to practice Monday. Schrader rushed for 59 yards for Los Angeles, while rookie Jarquez Hunter had 41 yards and Corum added 32. The game was largely cordial after the Cowboys hosted the Rams four days ago for a joint practice during Dallas' annual training camp in Oxnard, California. Schotty starts The game was the head coaching debut for the 51-year-old Schottenheimer, a well-traveled career assistant coach with stops including USC, the San Diego Chargers and two stints with the St. Louis Rams. He spent the past two years as Dallas' offensive coordinator before becoming Jerry Jones' surprising choice to replace Mike McCarthy last January. Although he has no intention of showing much of his offensive tendencies in the preseason to start his first year as Dallas' play-caller, Schottenheimer got right to work in the other privileges of his new job: He unsuccessfully challenged a sideline catch by the Rams' Xavier Smith on a 39-yard pass from Bennett on the game's opening drive. Kyler Murray looked good with big mistake in preseason opener
Most of the Arizona Cardinals' starting offense played just over a quarter in their preseason opener against the Kansas City Chiefs. That included quarterback Kyler Murray. The offense had two possessions and scored three points. For Murray, it was both a good performance but had one glaring negative. He ran operations very well. The offense moved the ball, going eight plays in the first drive and 10 on the second. Murray completed 7-of-8 passes for 96 yards. He completed passes to Marvin Harrison Jr., Trey McBride, Zay Jones, Michael Wilson, Trey Benson and two to Greg Dortch. The problem was he threw a red-zone interception. Neither drive ended with a touchdown. He was picked off and then they kicked a field goal. It was uncertain what he saw on the interception. He seemed to throw it right to Chiefs safety Jaden Hicks. Harrison was farther down the field and McBride was shorter but at the sideline. Now, teams do not game plan for opponents in the preseason, so we will see what is said about the play. For those looking to see that the offense can move, it was a positive. For those looking for finished drives and consistency, this performance did nothing to quell concerns. Travis Hunter plays offense and defense in pro debut as Jaguars lose to Steelers in preseason
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Travis Hunter's professional debut included 10 snaps on offense, eight on defense and no highlights. The Heisman Trophy winner and second overall pick in the NFL draft was relatively quiet in Jacksonville's 31-25 loss to Pittsburgh in a preseason game Saturday. He caught two passes for 9 yards, with a long gain of 6, and missed an open-field tackle. Hunter did, however, have a front-row seat for the most exciting play of the night: Cam Little drilled a 70-yard field goal on the final play of the first half, a kick that would have broken the NFL record had it happened during the regular season. Little and the Jaguars celebrated widely as the half ended. Holder Logan Cooke lifted both arms shortly after the ball took flight. Little leaned forward a little and then raised an arm as it cleared the crossbar. Cooke pushed Little to start the party, and then Hunter greeted Little on the field with a midair body-bump. Baltimore's Justin Tucker holds the NFL mark, having made a 66-yarder at Detroit in 2021. Little, a sixth-round draft pick from Arkansas in 2024, made 27 of 29 field-goal attempts as a rookie and all 27 extra points. His long was 59 yards. He seemed to know his latest one was good from the onset. He watched intently and pumped his fist as it slid a little left and cleared the bar by several yards — far enough that the ball boy caught it. The Steelers had much more to talk about after their preseason opener even though most of their starters watched from the sideline. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers, receiver DK Metcalf, linebacker T.J. Watt and cornerback Jalen Ramsey were among the Pittsburgh stars who got the night off. They witnessed backup Mason Rudolph complete 9 of 10 passes for 84 yards and a touchdown. Rudolph carved up Jacksonville's starting defense on Pittsburgh's opening drive. Third-stringer Skylar Thompson was just as good in relief, throwing for 233 yards and three scores. Pittsburgh's first two QBs combined to complete 29 of 38 passes for 317 yards and four TDs, with no turnovers. Jaguars first-year coach Liam Coen may have wanted a restart before Little's kick. His offense was flagged twice on its opening drive and hampered by four dropped passes in the first half. Parker Washington, Tank Bigsby, Trenton Irwin and Hunter Long all let balls slip through their fingers. And Coen's first-team defense was gashed early. Lawrence returns Trevor Lawrence, playing in his first game since sustaining a harrowing concussion against Houston last December, completed 6 of 7 passes for 43 yards in a series of work. Lawrence's one incompletion was a ball thrown late down the field to Brian Thomas Jr. He also scrambled for a 3-yard gain that ended with a hard hit. Flipping out Steelers rookie Max Hurleman, who signed as an undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame, celebrated his 3-yard TD catch in the second quarter with a backflip. It was a clear sign of Hurleman's athleticism. He spent four years playing running back at Colgate before joining the Fighting Irish and switching to defensive back for his final collegiate season. He's back at running back now and trying to make Pittsburgh's roster as a backup and a special teams ace. Sitting out Nine Jacksonville players did not dress for the game, including starting defensive tackle Arik Armstead (back). The list also included rookie safety Caleb Ransaw (foot) and cornerback Montaric Brown (lower leg).
