International Booker Prize Shortlist: 6 Books to Talk About

New York Times08-04-2025
A satire of expatriate life in trendy Berlin, a tale of an antiquarian book dealer stuck in a time loop, and a fictionalized retelling of a migrant boat tragedy in the English Channel, are among the six titles that will compete for this year's International Booker Prize, the award's organizers announced on Tuesday.
Perhaps the highest profile title on the shortlist for the prize for fiction translated into English is Solvej Balle's 'On the Calculation of Volume: 1' about a bookseller who relives the same day over and over again.
Balle's novel, translated from Danish by Barbara J. Haveland, was a nominee for last year's National Book Award for translated literature, and many critics have raved about it since its release last year. Hilary Leichter, in a review for the The New York Times, said that in Balle's hands 'the time-loop narrative takes on new and stunning proportions.'
The six shortlisted titles — four of which are under 200 pages — also include Vincenzo Latronico's 'Perfection,' translated from Italian by Sophie Hughes, about an expatriate couple living in a hip Berlin neighborhood and struggling to engage with life outside their bubble. Ryan Ruby, in a review for The Times, said that 'with ethnographic precision, Latronico taxonomizes the tastes, attitudes, vanities and blind spots of the people we now call digital nomads.'
Established in 2005, the International Booker Prize was originally given to an author for their life's work, but since 2016 has been awarded to a single book translated into English and published in Britain or Ireland. It comes with prize money of 50,000 pounds, about $64,000, which the winning author and translator share equally.
Last year's award went to Jenny Erpenbeck's 'Kairos' translated by Michael Hofmann. Previous winners have included Georgi Gospodinov's 'Time Shelter' and Han Kang's 'The Vegetarian.'
Max Porter, the author and chair of this year's judging panel, said in a news release that the 'mind-expanding' shortlist was 'a vehicle for pressing and surprising conversations about humanity.' The books 'don't shut down debate, they generate it,' he added.
Along with Balle's and Latronico's novels, the other shortlisted titles are:
The judges will announce a winner on May 20 during a ceremony at Tate Modern in London.

Will Cate Blanchett Star in a ‘Squid Game' US Spin-Off?

Ever since that shocking Squid Game season 3 ending, fans have been talking about the possibility of a US spin-off series starring Cate Blanchett (and helmed by David Fincher). And though Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk previously revealed to Variety that Cate's cameo in the series finale was 'not related' to the rumored spin-off, the actress is now weighing in on her future with the franchise. When asked about starring in an English-language spin-off or sequel series, Cate told Variety she is 'wildly open to anything,' adding, 'I mean, I'd love to work with David [Fincher] again. It's been ages. But no, I don't know anything more than you do. I'm not being coy. I really don't.' Way back in October 2024—long before the Squid Game series finale aired—Deadline reported that a brand-new spin-off was being developed for Netflix with David Fincher at the helm of the project. However, little else has been heard about the project since in June 2025, Hwang Dong-hyuk said he hadn't 'heard officially from Netflix about David Fincher creating a Squid Game.' But fret not, because the Squid Game creator is open to the possibly of a spin-off series. As he told Entertainment Weekly, 'I'm not trying to say that I'm going to close the door to spin-offs or sequels altogether because they say never say never.' And from the sound of it, Cate is down as chances are, even if she did know anything about a sequel series, she wouldn't be allowed to share any deets. While speaking about her Squid Game cameo with Variety (which she apparently landed 'out of the blue'), Cate noted how everything she learned about her role 'was on a need-to-know basis.' As she explained, 'I got a couple of storyboards. I had to [learn to] play the game very quickly. I had to practice and practice. I knew there were four or five setups that they were going to do, and I knew what they needed from every shot, and then I was given the sides. But it was one of the more mysterious jobs.'

World's ugliest dog crowned — see why a ‘gentle soul' bulldog named Petunia was tops: ‘Unique beauty'

This dog is a little ruff around the edges. A hairless English-French bulldog mix was crowned as the winner of the 2025 'World's Ugliest Dog' contest. In addition to the cash prize, Petunia will also be featured on limited-edition cans of Mug Root Beer, one of the sponsors of the canine event, and will appear on the 'TODAY' show on Aug. 11, the New York Times reported. And her looks are described as '… a mix between Yoda, she's a mix between a hippo, a bat — she's got it all,' NBC News correspondent Gadi Schwartz said on TODAY. 'The annual World's Ugliest Dog Contest is not about making fun of 'ugly' dogs, but having fun with some wonderful characters and showing the world that these dogs are really beautiful!' the site said. 5 Jinny Lu, a 5-year-old pug who was rescued from Korea, won second place and a spirit award. 'The contest speaks to the importance of advocating for the adoration of all animals and the benefits of adopting.' In this competition, the unique features of some pups, such as wild fur, missing teeth, dangling tongues and wandering eyes are badges of honor to wear proudly. 5 Little Prince Wonder, an 8-year-old Chinese Crested, competed in the World's Ugliest Dog Contest. Wild Thang survived distemper as a puppy and his teeth didn't grow in properly, which caused his silly tongue — a feature he was known and loved for. One of his front legs also constantly paddles around.
