Trade pitch sees Toronto Maple Leafs part ways with breakout forward who may not fit in Craig Berube's lineup originally appeared on The Sporting News
Although the Toronto Maple Leafs have had a pretty solid offseason so far, they are still missing a couple key pieces for Craig Berube's new-look lineup.
Swapping out finesse for physicality, the Maple Leafs are looking to be meaner, tougher, and potentially downright nasty at points. Their added depth shows they have a clear goal in mind, but they still lack a solid playoff performer.
Instead of the typical names that have been thrown about, and all this talk about expensive top-six targets, perhaps it would best behoove Brad Treliving to think smaller, well at least in name value.
That's what Cole Shelton of Heavy.com thinks, as he believes the team should take a chance at swapping out Bobby McMann for Alexei Toropchenko, but would it actually work out for the Maple Leafs?
Looking at it from the outside, not really considering that McMann just scored 20 goals for the team, and Toropchenko only hit four goals last season, but does have 60 points in 259 games (30 goals, 30 assists).
But he has familiarity with Craig Berube, having played under him and finding some moderate success. He also adds a huge dynamic; literally. He's 6'6, 222 pounds and is a physical force (223 hits last season). If he can find his offensive success again, he can add roughly the same output as McMann, with a better fit in the overall lineup.
With how the Maple Leafs are built now, adding Toropchenko is a great way to keep that DNA change while also improving over McMann's inconsistencies (McMann had no goals this postseason, at least Toropchenko had two) and at only 26, clears the Leafs forward in age by a good few years; McMann just turned 29.
The Leafs would have to do some some shuffling to get Toropchenko in the lineup, where we could see something like this:
Matthew Knies -- Auston Matthews -- Max Domi
Matias Maccelli -- John Tavares -- William Nylander
Dakota Joshua -- Nicolas Roy -- Nick Robertson
Alexey Toropchenko - Scott Laughton -- Steven Lorentz
This all depends on Toronto moving Calle Jarnkrok and David Kampf out of the lineup, but overall this gives Craig Berube a massive amount of depth, while still giving him the physical presence he almost demands.
It may seem silly to sell on Bobby McMann especially after a 20-goal season, but the Maple Leafs are in the business of change, and there's no one better to bring that than Alexey Toropchenko.

Thomas Müller jokes he's missing Manuel Neuer as Vancouver adventure begins

MUNICH (AP) — Thomas Müller has a lot to adapt to with the Vancouver Whitecaps after 25 years at Bayern Munich. First up, flying without an old friend. Aboard the plane taking him to Canada and Major League Soccer, Müller joked it was the first time in 15 years he'd flown without Manuel Neuer, the goalkeeper who's been his longtime teammate for Bayern and the German national team. 'I'm on my flight to Vancouver. I'm looking for the GOAT. Can you help me? I cannot find him anywhere,' Müller said in a video on Instagram. 'It's my first flight without Manuel Neuer since maybe 15 years, I don't know. I'm very excited to come to Vancouver to play for the Whitecaps. Fingers crossed for my first games. See you there.' The 35-year-old forward admitted to feeling 'a little bit nervous' in comments to German broadcaster Sky Sport. 'It's the first time in a very long time that I'm joining a new team.' Müller joined Bayern's academy as a 10-year-old in 2000 and had spent his entire career with the German champion, winning a record 13 Bundesliga titles, two Champions Leagues and the World Cup with Germany in 2014. His last game for Bayern was a quarterfinal loss to Paris Saint-Germain at the Club World Cup in Atlanta, after a months-long farewell from the club. Bayern announced in April it wouldn't be extending his contract. Müller said he understood 'even if this did not reflect my personal wishes.' The following weeks saw emotional scenes with teammates, club officials and fans as Müller hit personal milestones — passing his 500th Bundesliga game and 750th game in total for Bayern — and wrapped up yet another German title. Vancouver said last week Müller will join the Whitecaps for the remainder of the season in an open roster spot, with a Designated Player option for 2026. ___ AP soccer: The Associated Press

Kansas receives $300 million gift from donor

Yahoo Sports' Jason Fitz and Caroline Fenton discuss the news that the Jayhawks received one of the largest single gifts in college sports history. View more Video Transcript Kansas Athletics have gotten a $300 million donation from David Booth. So, uh, that's a massive, massive donation for them, believed to be among the largest single gifts in the history of college athletics and it's huge. Lance Leipold, in full disclosure, is a close friend of mine, the head coach of the University of Kansas football team to watch the transformation that that program is gone under, uh, gone through under somebody that I just consider to be a great man, is really incredible. There was a moment where Kansas football was wildly irrelevant and there were questions about whether or not they should even play games, Carolina. Now, not only have they become a contender, a, an annual contender, this donation is going to set them up to begin to continue that next step. 100%. We had Andy Staples on the show yesterday, which, of course, you could find on the Yahoo Sports YouTube page. And we talked about, you know, in 2021, when NIL became legalized, there was so much fear about, well, the big are only going to get bigger. The Alabamas, the Ohio States, the Texases that have so much money, they're only going to get better. And Andy Staples said, Well, those people are idiots, um, because that's not how that works. And we have schools like Kansas that don't really have any sort of history or not a very strong program. They're a Blue Blood basketball program. They're not a football school. We have schools like Kansas that have very wealthy and dedicated alumni like David Booth here, and I don't even know who David Booth is. Looks like he's an American businessman, yes. Oh, American businessman. OK, well, there you go. That is detailed. Um, but I've just looked him up, it says he has a, a net worth of $2 billion, don't we all? Um, that would be great. But we now have programs like Kansas that have wealthy and passionate alumni that say, hey, I want my team to be good. And money doesn't necessarily equal championships. I think we have several examples of that. But Ohio State invested $30 million into their roster last year and they did what? They won a national championship. So money can equal success in college football. So good. Kansas with $300 million worth of playing money. I don't even know what I would do with that. Uh, some fun money there, but good for Kansas and in the Big 12 with Texas Tech. It has said we have zero price tag. Give us all the money that you possibly can. And for a school like Colorado that has been resurrected in the NIL era, that, you know, that conference all of a sudden just got really, really interesting. Yeah, by the way, uh, it, it's been pointed out, uh, Michael Farb, our great producer, got us this nugget. He's the chairman of Dimensional Fund Advisors. So, uh, there we go, uh, Chairman of Dimensional Fund Advisors. Close
