Conspirator in loot of explosives by Maoists held in Odisha
ROURKELA: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Rourkela police on Sunday claimed to have made a significant breakthrough in the loot of explosives by Maoists by arresting the main conspirator identified as George Munda alias Kullu (43).
Police said Munda of Banko village in K Balang area had set up links with the Maoists for his own personal interest and facilitated the loot of the explosives-laden truck by providing detailed information about the stone quarry near which the crime took place.
DIG (Western Range) Brijesh Kumar Rai said during investigation, the SIT questioned several villagers and the name of Munda emerged as the leading conspirator. Munda was grilled and he confessed to the crime. For his own selfish interest, the accused collaborated with the Maoists and assisted in the crime by providing minute details of the status and operational procedures of the Banko stone quarry.
Police sources said Munda was staying opposite to the stone quarry at Banko village. He was reportedly extracting stones illegally from the quarry prior to its legal allotment to a leaseholder. Later, he started objecting to the operation of the quarry and through some of his acquaintances in Jharkhand, contacted Maoist leader Anmol Hembram alias Samarjee.

Shillong, Meghalaya DGP Idashisha Nongrang on Monday said the investigators probing the murder of Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi in Sohra were not treating the love triangle as the only motive, and they are looking into various other angles. Raja was hacked to death on May 23 while honeymooning in the Northeastern state. His wife Sonam, her boyfriend Raj and three hitmen were arrested in connection with the murder on June 9. "We are investigating whether there is anything more to this case. It is unusual that within a few days of marriage, she would develop so much animosity against her husband," Nongrang told PTI. "We are exploring all possible angles for this murder to have taken place. We have enough evidence, and loose ends are being tied up. We have a solid case," she added. Sonam and Raja got married in Indore on May 11 and reached Meghalaya via Guwahati in Assam on May 21 for their honeymoon. Both of them went "missing" on May 23 in Sohra in East Khasi Hills district, hours after checking out of a homestay at Nongriat village. Raja's decomposed body was found in a gorge near Weisawdong Falls on June 2. A search continued for Sonam, who emerged in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur, around 1,200 km away, in the early hours of June 9 and surrendered as police arrested his boyfriend and the three hitmen. Sonam told the investigators that the Raja's jewellery that went missing was kept in a "particular place", the DGP said. "We will be looking into that," she said. All those arrested will be taken to Sohra around 12 pm on Tuesday for the reconstruction of the crime scene, police said The hitmen, who were Raj's friends, had attacked Raja on the head with a machete in front of Sonam at the parking lot of the Weisawdong Falls. They then pushed the body into the gorge, according to the police. Sonam fled the state following the murder, taking taxis, buses, and a train to reach Indore via Assam, West Bengal, Bihar and UP. She, however, left behind her 'mangalsutra' and a ring in her trolley bag at a homestay in Sohra, leading the police to suspect her, Nongrang had earlier told PTI. Meanwhile, a video posted by a tourist on Instagram went viral after Sonam and Raja were spotted in it. In the video, Sonam and Raja were seen ascending from Nongriat just hours before he was brutally murdered. Sonam, wearing black trousers with a white full-sleeved shirt similar to the one recovered from the crime scene, was seen walking a few steps ahead of Raja. Police confirmed the authenticity of the video to PTI. East Khasi Hills district SP Vivek Syiem told the news agency that Sonam has confessed to being a part of the conspiracy to kill her husband. "At first it appeared that Sonam and her boyfriend hired hitmen, but later we found out the three were close friends of Raj and they killed Raja as a favour to their friend," he said. The SIT probing the case has sought the assistance from the police of Assam and some other states, where the accused persons have been before and after committing the crime, an official said. The machete used in the murder was bought from Guwahati, where the hitmen stayed for a night, he said. The three hitmen and the couple arrived in Shillong around the same time before they travelled to Sohra, about 65 km away, Deputy Inspector General DNR Marak said.

Prime accused held in explosives loot case
Rourkel: Odisha police on Sunday arrested the prime accused and mastermind behind the loot of five tonnes of explosives by Maoists from a vehicle near a stone quarry in Sundargarh district on May 27, an official said. The arrested accused has been identified as George Munda alias Kulu (43) from Banko village under K Balang police station. Munda was passing information to the Maoists. He was the main conspirator from the beginning of the loot and actively passed information to the Maoists, said DIG (Western Range) Brijesh Rai. During the investigation, Munda's complicity was found by the police. He was living just opposite the quarry and was objecting to it, which was closed down subsequently, Rai said. It was he who had passed the information regarding the movement of the vehicle with explosives and ensured that the loot was carried out without any problem, the police said. Around 200 packets of explosives, mostly gelatin sticks, were looted by Maoists at gun-point on May 27 while those were being transported to a stone quarry for blasting rocks. A day after the looting, Odisha DGP Y B Khurania and other senior police officers visited the spot and an NIA team also started investigation into the matter. Odisha police also constituted an SIT (Special Investigation Team) to probe the incident. Security personnel on May 30 recovered a substantial amount of the explosives looted by Maoists in Sundargarh district following a fierce gun-battle with the red rebels. They found the stolen explosives in a dense forest in Jharkhand, around 3 km from the Odisha border. So far, 3.8 tonnes of explosives have been recovered while search is still going on to recover the remaining explosives. The State police, with assistance from CRPF, CoBRA, Jharkhand's Jaguar and Odisha's SOG and District Voluntary Force (DVF), had launched the search operation in the nearby forests on the night of May 27. The DGP admitted that the SOP meant for carrying explosives was not adhered to when the incident took place.
