Investigation in Raja Raghuvanshi murder case not just confined to love triangle: Meghalaya DGP
Shillong, Meghalaya DGP Idashisha Nongrang on Monday said the investigators probing the murder of Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi in Sohra were not treating the love triangle as the only motive, and they are looking into various other angles.
Raja was hacked to death on May 23 while honeymooning in the Northeastern state. His wife Sonam, her boyfriend Raj and three hitmen were arrested in connection with the murder on June 9.
"We are investigating whether there is anything more to this case. It is unusual that within a few days of marriage, she would develop so much animosity against her husband," Nongrang told PTI.
"We are exploring all possible angles for this murder to have taken place. We have enough evidence, and loose ends are being tied up. We have a solid case," she added.
Sonam and Raja got married in Indore on May 11 and reached Meghalaya via Guwahati in Assam on May 21 for their honeymoon. Both of them went "missing" on May 23 in Sohra in East Khasi Hills district, hours after checking out of a homestay at Nongriat village.
Raja's decomposed body was found in a gorge near Weisawdong Falls on June 2. A search continued for Sonam, who emerged in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur, around 1,200 km away, in the early hours of June 9 and surrendered as police arrested his boyfriend and the three hitmen.
Sonam told the investigators that the Raja's jewellery that went missing was kept in a "particular place", the DGP said.
"We will be looking into that," she said.
All those arrested will be taken to Sohra around 12 pm on Tuesday for the reconstruction of the crime scene, police said
The hitmen, who were Raj's friends, had attacked Raja on the head with a machete in front of Sonam at the parking lot of the Weisawdong Falls. They then pushed the body into the gorge, according to the police.
Sonam fled the state following the murder, taking taxis, buses, and a train to reach Indore via Assam, West Bengal, Bihar and UP.
She, however, left behind her 'mangalsutra' and a ring in her trolley bag at a homestay in Sohra, leading the police to suspect her, Nongrang had earlier told PTI.
Meanwhile, a video posted by a tourist on Instagram went viral after Sonam and Raja were spotted in it. In the video, Sonam and Raja were seen ascending from Nongriat just hours before he was brutally murdered.
Sonam, wearing black trousers with a white full-sleeved shirt similar to the one recovered from the crime scene, was seen walking a few steps ahead of Raja.
Police confirmed the authenticity of the video to PTI.
East Khasi Hills district SP Vivek Syiem told the news agency that Sonam has confessed to being a part of the conspiracy to kill her husband.
"At first it appeared that Sonam and her boyfriend hired hitmen, but later we found out the three were close friends of Raj and they killed Raja as a favour to their friend," he said.
The SIT probing the case has sought the assistance from the police of Assam and some other states, where the accused persons have been before and after committing the crime, an official said.
The machete used in the murder was bought from Guwahati, where the hitmen stayed for a night, he said.
The three hitmen and the couple arrived in Shillong around the same time before they travelled to Sohra, about 65 km away, Deputy Inspector General DNR Marak said.

Guard blackmailing women to make calls in the buff held
Mumbai: A watchman who was well-versed in computer use was arrested after he created fake social media accounts of young women and posted obscene content to blackmail the women into having nude video calls with him. Police said he would take screenshots or film these video calls. Over 13,500 images of women were retrieved from his cellphone. The police expressed suspicion that the accused, Shubham Singh (25), had been harassing women online for nearly a year, but it is the first time that he has been arrested. On January 31, a woman in her mid-twenties approached Dahisar police station with a complaint about an unidentified man having created a fake Instagram account in her name and was posting obscene content about her on it. She said he was defaming her and blackmailing her. An FIR was registered. They wrote to Meta for more information on the harasser. After obtaining information from Meta about Singh's location, a police team headed by senior inspector Ashok Honmane and comprising inspector A Desai and cyber officer Ankush Dandge tracked him down to Karnataka. He was arrested on June 6. The police learnt that Singh, who hails from Bihar, had done a diploma course in computers and soft skills in Delhi in 2015-16. He was currently working as a watchman at a firm in Karnataka. Explaining the modus operandi, assistant commissioner of police Kishore Khairnar said Singh would send friendship requests over Instagram to random young women. If someone accepted his request, he would then take screenshots of photos from her profile. He would then send her a direct message with the screenshot and obscene messages added to it. He would threaten the woman into calling him up in the nude. If the woman refused, he would create a fake Instagram ID in her name and post the screenshots on it along with obscene messages, to defame her and force her into calling him in the nude. Police said as of now they have not found any evidence of Singh wanting to sell the nude videos and photos. "We have found 100 fake email IDs on his phone which he used to create fake social media accounts in the names of women. Currently, the police have found 11 such fake accounts live. Many fake accounts and nude photos/videos are likely to have been deleted," an officer said.

Meghalaya DGP indicates there could be more to honeymoon murder — ‘Motive doesn't sit very well'
The Meghalaya Police are still probing to unearth a motive beyond the one the relationship between the accused Raj Kushwaha and Sonam Raghuvanshi, Director General of Police Idashisha Nongrang said Monday as police investigation into the murder of Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi. At a press briefing, the DGP said that the motive currently cited in the case 'doesn't sit very well'. Raja was hacked to death on May 23 while honeymooning in the northeastern state. His wife Sonam, her boyfriend Raj and three hitmen were arrested in connection with the murder on June 9. 'I find it very difficult to accept the motive given by the accused… I am looking to see if there's anything additional because I find it very difficult to believe that a person would generate so much animosity that within a couple of days of marriage you plot to kill a person… On the surface, it appears to be a love triangle but personally I wouldn't believe that it's the only motive,' she said. She said that the investigation is probing all possible angles. 'The investigation is going on, a lot of the loose ends are being tied up and we are leaving no stone unturned to ensure that the investigation is foolproof and that we have a very solid case. We have enough evidence and are working to ensure that the case is chargesheeted within the mandated time,' she said. This comes at a time when a video showing Raja trekking through a forest with Sonam has now surfaced, capturing his final hours before he was killed by hired assassins in Meghalaya's treacherous terrain. The footage, recorded by an unsuspecting tourist on May 23 at approximately 9:45 am, shows the couple trekking up a steep mountain path in Meghalaya's lush landscape. Tourist Dev Singh, who was descending the same trail, captured the pair climbing steadily upward—with the prime suspect, Sonam Raghuvanshi, leading the way in a distinctive white T-shirt, her husband Raja following close behind. The white T-shirt she was wearing would later be discovered by Meghalaya police near the crime scene. The tourist who shot the video, Dev Singh wrote on Instagram: 'Yesterday, I was checking videos and I found a recording of the Indore couple. It was around 9:45 am when we were going down, and the couple was going up. I think this was the last recording of the couple, and Sonam was wearing the same white T-shirt, which was found near Raja. I hope this will also help Meghalaya police in connecting the dots.' He added with obvious distress: 'Every time I watched Raja in the video, I felt very bad about him. He was looking normal but unaware of what would be waiting for him'. Following the questioning of the accused, the police said the newlywed couple checked out of Shipara Homestay in Nongriat at 5:30 am, setting out for what Raja believed would be a romantic trek through Cherrapunji's scenic trails just 30 minutes later. Unknown to Raja, three hired killers—Anand Kurmi, Akash Rajput, and Vishal Chauhan—had allegedly checked out of their nearby accommodation at precisely the same time, shadowing the couple's every move as part of an elaborate murder plot orchestrated by his own wife and her alleged lover, Raj Kushwaha. By 10:00 am, after completing approximately 2,000 steps along the treacherous mountain path, fate intervened. The couple allegedly encountered the three assassins at a predetermined location, with a local guide later reporting he had spotted all five individuals together, noting how Sonam had begun walking conspicuously behind the group as the killers engaged her husband in conversation. At 12:30 pm, in what would prove to be a calculated deception, Sonam allegedly called Raja's mother, Uma Raghuvanshi, complaining of exhaustion from the demanding trek. Raja himself allegedly spoke to his mother during this call—their final conversation forever etched in tragedy. Just one hour later, the group of five allegedly drove from Mawlakhiat to the parking area near Wei Sawdong Waterfalls. There, in the isolated wilderness, the hired killers allegedly murdered Raja before disposing of his body in a remote gorge. What initially appeared to be a missing person''s case took a sinister turn on June 2 when police discovered Raja's remains, immediately launching a murder investigation. The web of deception began unravelling on the night of June 7, when the 'missing' wife was allegedly found unconscious at a roadside dhaba in Ghazipur.
