Is it spying on us? Nasa could turn Juno towards interstellar object near Jupiter
Unlike prior interstellar visitors, 3I/ATLAS's trajectory will bring it relatively close to Jupiter, offering a unique opportunity for direct scientific investigation. The plan, proposed in a draft paper, involves a precise engine burn by Juno on September 9, 2025, to adjust its orbit around Jupiter. Utilising a gravity-assisted 'Jupiter Oberth Manoeuvre,' Juno would gain the velocity and directional change needed to intercept 3I/ATLAS about two days before the comet's closest approach to Jupiter, potentially as near as 27 million kilometers. This manoeuvre is fuel-efficient, requiring only about 110 kg of Juno's remaining propellant, just 5.4% of its original fuel load.Currently, Juno is equipped with advanced instruments capable of probing 3I/ATLAS's composition and behaviour. These include a near-infrared spectrometer, magnetometer, microwave radiometer, and cameras that together could reveal the object's makeup and the nature of its coma and dust tail—details unattainable from Earth-based telescopes.
There is also speculative intrigue around the nature of 3I/ATLAS. (Photo: Nasa)
Insights gained could dramatically deepen understanding of interstellar visitors and their origins, shedding light on the properties of materials from other star systems. There is also speculative intrigue around the nature of 3I/ATLAS, with some discussions about whether such interstellar travellers could be natural objects or potentially artificial probes. While this remains unconfirmed, the ability for Juno to closely observe 3I/ATLAS could provide critical data to clarify its nature. This mission extension could both rejuvenate Juno's scientific lifespan and represent a new frontier in interstellar object exploration, capitalising on a rare celestial visitor as it journeys through our cosmic neighbourhood.- Ends

Sturgeon moon 2025: When to watch and what makes this full moon special
Stargazers, take note: the August full moon, known as the Sturgeon Moon, will reach peak illumination at 3.55 am ET on Saturday, August 9, according to NASA. And while you might miss the exact moment, fear not, astronomers say the moon will appear full for nearly three days, offering plenty of opportunities to catch the show, reported Today. August full moon is also called Sturgeon Moon(Representative Image/ Pixabay) Why is it called the Sturgeon Moon? The name 'Sturgeon Moon' originated from the Native American tribes in the Great Lakes region, who found abundant sturgeon, large freshwater fish, during this time of the year. The Today report cited Old Farmer's Almanac recorded the name as a seasonal marker that has been passed down through generations. Other names for the August full moon include: corn moon, black cherries moon, and mountain shadows moon. Also Read: 3 zodiac signs are likely to receive luck and abundance before the August full moon 2025 arrives, says a tarot reader What is special about this full moon? Astronomer Catherine Pilachowski explained that the exact moment of full illumination will last only an instant, but the moon will appear full for nearly three days. The August Moon 2025 also aligns with lunar aphelion on August 7, when the moon is at its farthest point from the sun: a rare occurrence during a full moon. Adding to the spectacle, a planetary alignment of Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn may also be visible around moonset on August 9 and again on August 11. Pilachowski told Today that with the moon approaching fullness, the silver not illuminated gets smaller until the entire face of the moon public sees is in sunlight. Perseid Meteor Shower: Bonus night sky show Moon will not be the only thing to watch for the skygazers on August 12 and August 13. You might see the bright Perseid meteors zoom in the northern sky. The moon's glow may mess up the view a bit. Tips to watch it: go far from city lights, let your eyes get used to the dark, & look away from the moon, stated another Louisville Courier Journal report. Also Read: New Moon in Leo 2025: Power horoscopes for each zodiac sign Will Louisville have clear skies? According to the National Weather Service said Louisville will have some clouds on August 9, which should allow for partial moon visibility, though local conditions may vary, the Louisville Courier Journal report added. FAQs When is the August full moon? The full moon is on August 9 at 3:55 am EDT. How long will the moon appear full? For approximately three days, from the evening of August 8 to August 10. Why is it called the Sturgeon Moon? Named after the Great Lakes tribes who caught sturgeon in abundance during August. What are all the full moons of 2025? The rest of the full moons in 2025 are: September is the Corn Moon, October is the Hunter's Moon, November is the Beaver Moon, and December is the Cold Moon. Why is my anxiety worse during a full Moon? Some people report increased anxiety during a full Moon, possibly due to changes in sleep patterns or heightened emotional sensitivity.

Get Ready For The Most Epic Meteor Show Of The Year: Perseids Peak In August
The Perseid meteor shower, peaking in mid-August, is widely regarded as the best of the year. Known for its swift, bright meteors that often leave glowing trails, the shower typically produces 50 to 100 meteors per hour. Warm summer nights make it comfortable for viewing. However, this year's viewing may be impacted by an 84% full moon on the peak night, which could outshine the fainter meteors. While brighter meteors may still be visible in the early morning hours, moonlight will likely reduce overall visibility. Watch the video here: Hey skywatchers! What's Up for August? ✨ Jupiter and Venus have a morning meetup, we check out this year's Perseid meteor shower, and peek into the future of our own Sun. — NASA Solar System (@NASASolarSystem) August 1, 2025 For the best experience, head away from city lights, let your eyes adjust for about 30 minutes, and enjoy the show. What causes the Perseid meteor shower? The Perseid meteor shower occurs when Earth travels through debris left by comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, which orbits the Sun every 133 years. As Earth moves through the comet's dust trail from around July 14 to September 1, tiny particles - about the size of sand grains-hit our atmosphere at speeds of 215,000 km/h. The intense friction heats the air, producing glowing streaks of light. The shower peaks when Earth passes through the densest part of the stream, creating the most visible meteors. What Makes It Special Perseids are famous for their fireballs, large, bright meteors caused by bigger particles, often more visible than typical meteors. When and Where to Watch To view the Perseids meteor shower, look straight up to take in as much of the night sky as possible. The meteors appear to originate from the constellation Perseus, but it's best to look away from this point to spot meteors with longer tails. Locate Perseus by finding Cassiopeia, a W-shaped constellation, and look below it. The Perseids are visible from 10 pm onwards, especially during pre-dawn hours. Where Meteors Come From They originate from debris left by comets and asteroids. As Earth crosses this debris, the particles burn in the atmosphere, creating streaks of light. The meteors appear to radiate from the constellation Perseus, which gives the shower its name.

After conflict over tariff, US and China now fighting over treasure on moon, NASA will play... The United States is planning to send a nuclear reactor into space by 2030. The interim administrator of NASA, Sean Duffy, in a directive last week, mentioned that he is looking forward to sending a nuclear reactor to the South Pole Area of the Moon. There are many countries in line, and he clearly mentioned that the US wants to move ahead of China in this race. Mr Duffy proposed that several private companies are being contacted to give their proposals for the development of a powerful reactor. Where does the US want to send a nuclear reactor? The US wants to send a nuclear reactor to a special area of the moon, the South Pole area, where no country other than India has ever reached. What are the possible challenges in installing a nuclear reactor on the moon? The lunar surface of the Moon experiences two weeks of continuous sunlight accompanied by two weeks of continuous darkness. It implies that one lunar day is equal to four weeks on Earth. This can be a challenge to produce energy. Which countries are in line? Globally, many nations aim to reach on moon. Some are the US, China, Russia, India, and Japan. There are countries that aim to establish permanent human settlements too. The Antemis-III Mission NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) desires to send a nuclear reactor to the moon by the middle of 2027 under their Antemis-3 Mission. Under this mission, NASA aims to send the first woman and first human of color to the South Pole of the Moon.
