Can Hong Kong's Cathay compete against rivals dishing out hefty bonuses?

Cathay Pacific Airways may find itself in a weaker position in the race for global talent, an analyst has said, after two of the airline's major rivals dished out heftier bonuses for at least two straight years.
Singapore Airlines (SIA) offered employees a profit-sharing bonus equivalent to 7.45 months' pay after reporting a record net profit of S$2.78 billion (US$2.15 billion) for 2024-25, surpassing analysts' expectations.
The amount is slightly lower than the 7.94 months' bonus it dished out last year, despite a 3.9 per cent increase in SIA's net profit.
Dubai-based airline Emirates' employees are also in line for a windfall after its group announced last week a record-breaking pre-tax profit of US$6.2 billion for the 2024-25 financial year, with staff set to receive a 22-week bonus payout.
Emirates, the most profitable airline in the world over the reporting period, has committed big bonuses to its ever-growing workforce for three years running. It awarded a 20-week bonus to employees in 2024 and a 24-week one in 2023.
By comparison, Cathay Group's net profit rose 1 per cent year on year to HK$9.9 billion (US$1.28 billion) in 2024, up from HK$9.78 billion in 2023, which was the first time it recorded a profit in four years. The company had accumulated a string of large deficits totalling HK$34 billion over three years when the Covid-19 pandemic crippled the travel industry.

Hong Kong's population has stabilised and remains 'virtually unchanged' for the first time in a decade, following an influx of talent in recent years after waves of emigration. The Census and Statistics Department said on Thursday that Hong Kong's midyear population stood at 7,527,500, a slight increase of 3,400 from 12 months ago, or a rise of about 0.005 per cent. 'The population remained virtually unchanged, as compared with that at mid-2024,' the government said, attributing it to ongoing measures to attract talent and import workers. 'Over the past few years, many people have moved to Hong Kong from mainland China and other places around the world.' The inflow had offset the impact of the natural population decrease to stabilise the overall number, the department said. The latest population marked an increase of more than 180,000 compared with mid-2022, it added. It is the first time since 2015 that the population has not changed by at least 0.2 per cent.

Hong Kong rail giant the MTR Corporation has reported a 15.7 per cent drop in recurrent-business profit to HK$3.39 billion in the first six months of this year from the same period in 2024 due to higher operating costs. After taking into consideration property gains and losses from a one-off revaluation of investment properties, the group said on Thursday that its net profit jumped 27.5 per cent to HK$7.7 billion during the first half of 2025. MTR Corp CEO Jacob Kam Chak-pui said that business over the period had been 'eventful'. 'The first six months of 2025 proved to be an eventful time that saw the MTR take meaningful steps forward in its expanding capital works programme, while rising patronage figures drove solid results for the company's operating revenue,' he said. Kam added that the company was in the 'harvesting stage' of its earlier property development projects. It recorded a property development profit of HK$5.54 billion in the first six months of this year compared with HK$1.74 billion in the same period in 2024, mainly from two packages near Ho Man Tin station and another two at The Southside mall near Wong Chuk Hang station.

Hong Kong revs up development of autonomous vehicles with new, expanded trials

Hong Kong is ramping up efforts to develop driverless vehicle services by launching a trial at Cyberport and expanding an initiative at the West Kowloon arts hub following road tests in other areas. The Transport Department said on Thursday that mainland Chinese tech giant Baidu was also interested in applying to test autonomous vehicles in Kai Tak, in addition to its trials in Northern Lantau and Tung Chung. The trial at the West Kowloon Cultural District was expected to move forward to road tests with passengers on autonomous minibuses on public roads this year, it added. The department said earlier that it had approved a trial to be conducted at Cyberport, the digital tech hub in Southern district, involving 10 driverless private cars. The licensee, Baidu Apollo International, has been running similar tests in northern Lantau and Tung Chung since December 2024 and June this year, respectively. A spokesman for the department said the tests had been smooth, with the vehicles maintaining a stable performance.
