Cummins beats quarterly revenue estimates on generator demand; tariff concerns linger
Shares of the company were up about 3% in afternoon trading.
The company's power generation products, such as generators, have seen strong demand from AI-driven investments towards data centers.
However, it expects North America truck demand to sharply decline in the third quarter, as tariff uncertainties drag new truck orders to multi-year lows.
"We view current order levels as unsustainably low, but immediate catalysts for recovery are not yet clear," CFO Mark Smith said on a post-earnings conference call.
However, "favorable pricing within light-duty markets continued to benefit margin performance within engines," according to Jefferies analyst Stephen Volkmann.
Cummins declined to reinstate its full-year revenue forecast, withdrawn last quarter, stating it has not yet felt the full impact of tariffs, with their duration and scale still uncertain.
The company added it has worked to offset tariff impacts and expects to be near price-cost neutral by the fourth quarter, despite a hit to its second-quarter profitability.
Its power systems segment revenue rose 19% to $1.89 billion in the quarter, while the components segment fell 9% and the engine segment declined 8%.
Cummins posted second-quarter revenue of $8.64 billion, as compared to $8.8 billion a year earlier. Analysts, on average, had expected $8.44 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG.
The Indiana-based company reported a net income of $890 million or $6.43 per share, compared to $726 million or $5.26 per share a year ago.

Trump says he could impose more tariffs on China, similar to India duties, over Russian oil
WASHINGTON, Aug 6 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday said he could announce further tariffs on China similar to the 25% duties announced earlier on India over its purchases of Russian oil, depending on what happens. "Could happen," Trump told reporters, after saying he expected to announce more secondary sanctions aimed at pressuring Russia to end its war in Ukraine. He gave no further details. "It may happen ... I can't tell you yet," Trump said. "We did it with India. We're doing it probably with a couple of others. One of them could be China." Trump on Wednesday imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods, on top of a 25% tariff announced previously, citing its continued purchases of Russian oil. The White House order did not mention China, which is another big purchaser of Russian oil. Last week, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned China that it could also face new tariffs if it continued buying Russian oil.

CRH sees US market for low-carbon cement alternatives doubling by 2050
DUBLIN, Aug 6 (Reuters) - CRH (CRH.N), opens new tab expects the market for supplementary cementitious materials (SCM), a low-carbon alternative to cement, to double in the United States by 2050, the head of the largest building materials producer in the U.S. said on Wednesday. CRH CEO Jim Mintern made the comments after the industrial giant reported a better than expected 9% rise in second quarter core profit and forecast full-year earnings of $7.5 billion to $7.7 billion, versus a prior range of $7.3 billion to $7.7 billion. The Irish-based, U.S.-listed firm, which makes about 75% of its profit in North America, agreed to acquire U.S. SCM supplier Eco Material Technologies for $2.1 billion last month to meet growing demand for the alternative ash-based products. "In particular what attracted us (to the deal) is that when you look out in the U.S., we estimate that the SCM market is going to double between now and 2050," Mintern said. "This deal puts us right up there in terms of size and leadership levels in the U.S. (and) gives us a very good growth platform." The acquisition will boost CRH's capacity in the 135 million metric ton U.S. SCM market to about 25 million tons, he added. CRH is the third largest cement manufacturer in both North America and Europe. CRH's second quarter adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) of $2.5 billion were ahead of the $2.4 billion expected by an average of seven analysts polled by LSEG SmartEstimate. Mintern said the increase in the lower end of its full year guidance range was based on trading in the seasonally important month of July and a year-on-year increase in the volume and margins of contracted work across all major U.S. product lines.
