MPAJ: No foreigners on frontline

The Star30-04-2025
FOREIGN workers are still manning counters at businesses in Ampang Jaya, Selangor, although this is not permitted, says Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ).
Its president Dr Ani Ahmad reminds business owners that foreigners are prohibited from serving in frontline roles, including at service counters.
She said MPAJ would be sending out reminders on the ruling to operators.
'This is a needed reminder as there are many instances where we find foreign workers manning the counters,' she said during the local council's monthly full board meeting at Menara MPAJ yesterday.
Licensing and Entrepreneurial Development Department director Addy Hissham Elias said only foreign workers with valid Immigration Department permits were allowed to work in any business.
'Even with a valid permit, they are not allowed to work in frontline positions like manning the counter.
'Only the business owner or a Malaysian employee is allowed to handle transactions.
'If violations are found, enforcement action can be taken,' he said.
Their response came after councillor Engku Faizan Azhar Che Engku Husin urged MPAJ to clarify its position following a new directive from Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) banning foreign workers from operating or working at food stalls and kiosks under its jurisdiction starting June 1.
MBDK states that only Malaysians are allowed to work at stalls and kiosks, regardless of whether the foreign workers had valid immigration permits.
On another matter, Ani said MPAJ recorded a 30.47% rise in assessment tax collection this year, with RM44.3mil collected as of March 31.
This is a RM10.3mil increase in collection compared to the same period last year, she added.
Based on MPAJ's 2025 Budget, Ani said the local council aimed to collect RM93mil in current assessment tax.
'The Revenue Department has taken action against defaulters by issuing Form E for assessment tax arrears for April in commercial and residential areas.
'This involves 566 accounts with total outstanding arrears amounting to RM556,976.93.'
The areas include Taman Pandan Perdana, Taman Bukit Pandan, Taman Mawar, Taman Bukit Permai, Kampung Cheras Baru and Taman Ukay Perdana.
'An assessment tax operation in Taman Melawati on April 23 recovered RM13,454.80 of the total RM43,795.50 in outstanding arrears,' the council chief disclosed.
At the close of the meeting, Ani said this was her final full board session as MPAJ president, as her tenure ended on April 30.
'I would like to take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt thanks to council members and all MPAJ staff for their support throughout my two years here.
'I hope the efforts to enhance MPAJ's tax and non-tax revenue, as well as its Endowment Fund, will continue in the future.
'There have been many memories and valuable experiences during my time at MPAJ, which I will carry with me to my next posting,' she said.
Ani was appointed MPAJ president in May 2023.
Prior to that, she was the former district officer of Hulu Langat.

Absen A25 Series Brings 3D Panda to KL's Golden Triangle

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA - Media OutReach Newswire - 15 August 2025 – Absen has transformed the McDonald's intersection in Kuala Lumpur's Golden Triangle into a global digital landmark with its A25 series outdoor giant screen and a groundbreaking naked-eye 3D panda animation. The first project in Absen's Global 20 Super Landmark Cases Plan, it marks a milestone in company's 20-year global journey, merging cutting-edge display tech with creative storytelling to turn one of Asia's busiest hubs into an international destination for digital art and public engagement. Located near the Petronas Towers, the site draws over 500,000 pedestrians daily. To stand out, Absen partnered with a Spanish visual design team to create an immersive narrative: a giant panda peeks from behind curtain, slips while reaching for bamboo, floats in zero gravity, and is pulled into a swirling vortex—before 'I Love KL' appears and the panda lands playfully, sparking cheers and social sharing. Each scene breaks screen boundary, delivering powerful visual impact with strong viral potential. 'Malaysians have a natural affection for pandas,' said Sophia, Absen's Malaysia Outdoor Advertising Manager. 'This isn't just advertising—it's an urban-scale interactive experience that makes the screen part of city's collective memory.' Built for high-traffic, high-challenge urban environments, the A25 features IP66 full-sealing and a five-layer waterproof interface, ensuring reliability in high heat, humidity, and monsoon rains. Its advanced power-saving technology reduces energy consumption by over 50% compared to conventional displays, saving up to USD 200,000 in electricity over five years for a 300㎡ screen—dramatically lowering total cost of ownership. A client representative said: 'We chose Absen for efficiency, durability, and image quality. But more importantly, it helps us create something iconic—not just another ad. With 3D storytelling and custom pandas, we make it fun, not boring.' Since launching its first overseas screen in Saudi Arabia in 2005, Absen has deployed over 2 million displays worldwide. 'We make low power consumption a core focus of our R&D,' said Shaun, Absen VP & R&D Director. 'The A25 redefines the 'low-carbon landmark' — energy-smart, reliable, and city-activating. Backed by a 10-year warranty, it sets a new standard for outdoor displays.' As the first of 20 global landmarks, the Kuala Lumpur project embodies Absen's vision: where technology, creativity, and urban culture converge to shape future of public spaces.

Chinese and Asean experts gather to explore the region's digital future

KUALA LUMPUR (Xinhua): South-East Asian nations are poised to accelerate their adoption of new technologies and the digitalization of their societies, Malaysian Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo has said. China's significant advantages in artificial intelligence (AI), cross-border systems, and other emerging high-technology fields will enable members of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (Asean), including Malaysia, to ensure their efforts reach all levels of society, ensuring inclusive and sustainable development, Gobind said in his remarks at the 2025 China Mobile Southeast Asia Cooperation Conference. "Building a digital future requires deep cooperation with partners such as China. China holds significant advantages in next-generation network deployment, edge intelligence, AI applications, and cross-border digital platforms. Malaysia highly values its cooperation with China in the digital domain, and we welcome further collaboration," he said. For his part, Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia Ouyang Yujing said in his remarks that in recent years, digital economy cooperation between China and Asean has entered a new stage of comprehensive depth, with Malaysia and China in particular having signed memorandums of understanding (MoU) to enhance investment and cooperation in the digital economy. "These emphasize the importance of seizing opportunities brought by the digital economy, green development, and AI. This not only brings development benefits to the people of both countries but also sets a new benchmark for regional digital economy development," he said. Meanwhile, China Mobile Communications Group Co., Ltd. Executive Vice President Li Huidi said that AI is now at the forefront of a new wave of technological and industrial transformation, becoming increasingly user-friendly and widely accessible, and emerging as a new driver of social progress. "Southeast Asia is emerging as a global hub for AI, driven by a young population, strong economic growth, and supportive national strategies. Its rapidly improving computing infrastructure is laying a solid foundation for AI development and deployment," he said, adding that China Mobile is willing to work with partners from all sectors through close collaboration. Under the theme "Envisioning Intelligent Ecosystems, Empowering the Digital Future," the conference, organized by China Mobile, brings together leaders from government, the telecommunications industry, and academia to discuss the region's digital landscape. - Xinhua
