KOTA KINABALU (Aug 1): Agrobank has earmarked RM200 million for its Agrofood Financing Fund (DPA) 2025 to support national food security and promote the long-term sustainability of Malaysia's agricultural and agrofood sectors.
The fund provides financing facilities to farming communities engaged in agricultural and agrofood production activities — ranging from upstream to downstream — including related support services. The goal is to encourage the adoption of agrotechnology and enhance the resilience of the agrofood industry.
Agrobank Chief Executive Officer Dato Tengku Ahmad Badli Shah Raja Hussin said the bank, as the implementing agency, offers financing between RM50,000 and RM5 million to eligible agricultural entrepreneurs at a profit rate of just three percent per annum.
'The financing covers fixed capital needs such as asset purchases and development costs, as well as working capital,' he said. 'It also supports the entire agrofood value chain, including food production like planting, farming and fishing, along with processing, distribution, marketing, and food preparation services.'
Tengku Ahmad said the initiative reinforces Agrobank's role as a development financial institution (DFI) committed to providing inclusive, sustainable and accessible financing to farming communities and agro-industry players.
'This effort is aligned with the government's aim to boost the competitiveness of the nation's agri-food sector,' he added.
The handing over of the DPA 2025 was witnessed by Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup during a ceremony held at the Sabah International Convention Centre here today.

Malaysia approves RM11.62 bln in furniture projects as of March 2025

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 1,533 furniture projects worth RM11.62 billion have been approved as of March this year, according to Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Liew Chin Tong. He revealed that 62% of these investments were domestic, while 38% came from foreign sources. The government continues to support the industry through the Market Development Grant (MDG), administered by MATRADE. Eligible companies receive RM25,000 for overseas trade promotions and RM5,000 for local events. Liew noted that 314 furniture firms have benefited from the MDG, with 4,148 applications approved—the highest among all sectors. 'From January 2021 to July 2025, MDG-assisted furniture companies generated RM1.46 billion in export sales,' he said during a Dewan Rakyat session. The grants disbursed to the sector total RM12.25 million. Addressing concerns about foreign competition, Liew stated that while Malaysia imposes no restrictions on furniture sector investments, MIDA will no longer actively encourage foreign participation, particularly in labour-intensive projects. 'Malaysia's furniture industry is already globally competitive, and we aim to prioritise local growth,' he added. - Bernama

Two businessmen remanded over RM800,000 bribery case in Kuching

The two suspects are seen being escorted by enforcement personnel in the courthouse. KUCHING (Aug 5): The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Sarawak has remanded two business owners for allegedly soliciting and receiving more than RM800,000 in bribes to facilitate an application for a non-existent commercial land lot in Kuching. Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan issued a six-day remand order until Aug 11 at the Kuching Magistrate's Court today, following an application by MACC. Sources said the two male suspects, both in their 50s, were arrested around 8pm yesterday when they turned up at the MACC Sarawak office to give their statements. 'Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects allegedly conspired to solicit and receive bribes as an inducement to help process an application for a commercial development land lot in Kuching. However, such an application never existed,' the source said. It is believed the alleged offences took place between 2020 and 2021. MACC Sarawak director Hasbilah Mohamad Salleh, when contacted, confirmed the arrests, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009. bribery case businessman Court lead Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission

#SHOWBIZ: Iqbal Zulkefli: 'Owning luxury cars is financially draining'

KUALA LUMPUR: Entrepreneur and influencer Iqbal Zulkefli has admitted that owning a luxury car can be a financial burden, saying that the upkeep is not as glamorous as it seems. In a post on X, he wrote: "For celebrities with luxury cars, it's a huge monthly expense. For example, road tax and insurance for a Lamborghini can cost up to RM100,000 a year." He added that many luxury car owners, including himself, delay these payments, especially if they rarely use the vehicle. "I've done the same, but it's risky as any accident would be even more expensive to fix. Honestly, owning expensive cars is financially draining," he said. This follows yesterday's viral news that several influencers and celebrities have been flagged for delaying road tax payments on their luxury vehicles. The issue came to light after a social media user shared images of luxury cars, reportedly belonging to these public figures, that had been seized by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) due to unpaid road tax. It was noted that some of these cars are only used on weekends.
