With Bhujbal back in the cabinet, Dhananjay Munde's political revival in question
Mumbai: Senior NCP legislator and prominent Other Backward Classes (OBC) leader Chhagan Bhujbal's induction into the Maharashtra cabinet on Tuesday has put a question mark over the political revival of Dhanajay Munde, the man he is replacing.
Munde was forced to resign from the cabinet in March following the arrest of his close aide, Walmik Karad, in connection with the murder of Beed sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh. The 49-year-old Munde, another prominent OBC face in the NCP, was expecting to eventually return to the cabinet. But now, with Bhujbal occupying his vacant berth, there is uncertainty over his future.
Both Bhujbal and Munde were among the key leaders who pledged allegiance to Ajit Pawar when he split the Sharad Pawar-led NCP in June 2023. Munde was known as Ajit Pawar's close confidante and had also stood solidly behind him when he tried to split the party unsuccessfully in 2019, while Bhujbal had remained loyal to Sharad Pawar.
When Ajit Pawar's NCP faction joined the Eknath Shinde-led BJP-Shiv Sena government in 2023, he included both Bhujbal and Munde in the NCP's team of ministers. Then, during the Maratha quota agitation led by activist Manoj Jarange-Patil, Bhujbal was vocal against the demand for including Marathas in the OBC quota.
While there was anger against Bhujbal among the Marathas, he still managed to win the 2024 assembly elections from Yeola in Nashik district, as the Mahayuti returned to power. However, Ajit Pawar chose not to retain Bhujbal as minister and picked Munde as the party's OBC face in the NCP's team of ministers.
The brutal murder of Santosh Deshmukh in Beed on December 9, though, flipped things around for Munde. As the allegations and protests against Karad grew, several opposition leaders also trained their guns on his political benefactor, Munde. Not willing to risk the anger of the people, both chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar eventually asked Munde to resign. Ironically, Bhujbal had then stood behind Munde.
A senior NCP leader said that Munde was hoping for rehabilitation. 'When he resigned, he assumed that he would be re-inducted into the cabinet once all the accused were charge-sheeted and the trial began. It was considered that there could be a reshuffle of the cabinet after the local body polls, slated to be held after the monsoon. The vacant slot in the cabinet following his resignation was not filled immediately, which also gave him hope,' he said.
However, the central government's decision to have a caste census and the upcoming local body polls compelled Fadnavis and Pawar to bring Bhujbal back into the cabinet. The 77-year-old is a vocal OBC leader with a pan-Maharashtra presence. Having him in the government would make Mahayuti's OBC appeal stronger, the leader added.
Things would be further problematic for Munde as he is also locked in a silent power tussle with his cousin Pankaja Munde for the political control of Beed district. Dhanajay had defeated Pankaja in the 2019 assembly elections. The duo buried the hatchet ahead of the 2024 elections as Pankaja gave up her claim on the Parli constituency in Beed. She was then inducted as a minister by the BJP in the Mahayuti 2.0 government. Now, with Dhananjay out of the cabinet and no immediate chances of him returning as a minister, there could be a fresh tussle between the duo, according to NCP leaders.
Meanwhile, Munde himself welcomed Bhujbal's induction as a minister. 'Senior leader and our guide Bhujbal saheb took oath as a cabinet minister. Heartiest congratulations and wishes for his new tenure,' he posted on social media on Tuesday.

CM Siddaramaiah points to Congress high command, says re-enumerating caste population data not Karnataka govt's decision
A day after the Congress high command asked the Karnataka Government to re-enumerate the population figures of various communities in the state for its Socio-economic and Educational Survey, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the exercise was based on the directions issued by the party leadership and was not the decision of the state government. Responding to media queries at Gowribidanur in Chikkaballapur district, Siddaramaiah said, 'We will do whatever the high command says. It is not my decision. It is not the decision of the Cabinet. It is not the decision of our government. It is a decision of the high command. They have told us to go for re-enumeration,' he said. The directions from the high command had come ahead of a special Cabinet meeting convened by the Siddaramaiah administration Thursday, which was said to be keen on accepting the report. The decision was announced by Congress general secretary K C Venugopal after the high command held a meeting with Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar. The report had kept several communities on tenterhooks, especially the Lingayats and Vokkaligas who had publicly criticised it for being 'unscientific'. 'The high command has told us that they have received some complaints because the survey was done in 2015-16. Nine to 10 years have passed, and the data has become old,' Siddaramaiah said. The government will now conduct the survey 'in a short span of time', within 60-70 days, he added. This does not mean that the entire report will be rejected, the Congress leader stated, referring to the various recommendations made in it. 'Principally, the report is accepted, but enumeration will be done again,' he added. The survey was commissioned in 2015 during Siddaramaiah's first term as chief minister but was placed before the Cabinet only in April this year. Dominant communities have opposed the report as the survey found that Other Backward Classes (OBCs) formed 70 per cent of the state's population and dismissed assumptions about the size of the Lingayat and Vokkaliga communities. OBC groups, however, have asked the government to accept the report.

"Opposition has to play very constructive role": BJP MP Daggubati Purandeshwari
New Delhi [India], June 11 (ANI): BJP MP Daggubati Purandeshwari, who was part of an all-party delegation on Operation Sindoor on Wednesday, called on the opposition to play a 'very constructive role' and 'speak as countrymen', 'The Opposition has to play a very constructive role. Suppose there was anything that was a miss in this entire Operation Sindoor, it would have been nice if the opposition leaders had constructively brought it up and told the government that this is not enough; you probably could have done that. They may think that it is their duty to confront the government, but this Operation Sindoor was because 26 innocent civilians were killed. I think their opposition should understand this. They should rise above the party politics and speak as countrymen...' Purandeshwari told ANI. Her assertion came after Prime Minister Modi himself met with the members of the seven Parliamentary delegations that had been sent to multiple key partner countries. She further said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was keen to know other countries' responses to India's stance on terrorism. On meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Purandeswari told ANI, 'We thank PM Narendra Modi because he has actually met all of us, soon after we came back from the diplomatic tour that we had undertaken... He met us in small groups, and he interacted with us. He was very keen to know what the reaction of the other countries was...' The BJP MP asserted that the all-party delegations represented people cutting across party lines and spoke as Indians. 'When we went on a diplomatic delegation, we did not go as individual parties. So there is no question of somebody being an opposition leader or anything of that sort. We all went as Indians. We all went to a place before the international community, the cause of India and how India was suffering from terrorism...' The delegations, consisting of MPs from across party lines, former MPs and distinguished diplomats, highlighted India's stand against terror and commitment to world peace during their visits to various nations. Seven groups of all party delegations, including Opposition MPs such as Supriya Sule of NCP-SCP, Shashi Tharoor of Congress party, AIMIM chief Asaddudin Owaisi, and former ambassadors, completed their diplomatic efforts to visit various world capitals and promoted India's policy of zero tolerance against terrorism. The delegation was launched post Operation Sindoor, India's response to the Pahalgam attack in Jammu and Kashmir, in which 26 tourists were killed. Over 50 people, including members of Parliament from multiple political parties, former ambassadors, and former government officials, visited over 30 countries as part of India's diplomatic outreach post Operation Sindoor. IMFL prices to rise up to 85% as Maharashtra cabinet approves excise hike; rate on country liquor increased to Rs 205
The Maharashtra state cabinet has approved an excise tax revision, significantly increasing the price of ordinary whisky and rum by Rs 90-100 per quarter bottle, while premium IMFL brands will see a smaller increase of Rs 30-40. M UMBAI: The minimum price of Rs 115 for a quarter bottle (180ml) of ordinary whisky or rum will rise by Rs 90-100 with the state cabinet approving a revision in excise taxes Tuesday. While it is a rise of 78-85% for ordinary Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL), the hit on the pocket is softer for premium IMFL brands, which will cost Rs 30-40 more that the minimum price of Rs 330 today for a quarter, or a rise of 9-12%. Besides a 14% excise increase for country liquor, the cabinet also approved a rise in the licence fees for permit rooms. Manufacture of a new grain-based foreign liquor, to be called Maharashtra-made liquor (MML), was also approved. The state govt, which has been looking for ways to increase its revenue to fund schemes and election promises like the Rs 1,500 per month Ladki Bahin dole for women, hopes to mop up an additional Rs 14,000 crore with the excise hike. The meeting that cleared the proposals was chaired by CM Fadnavis. A secretary-level study group had been formed to increase the revenue of the excise department. This group studied the best practices and policies in other states and submitted its recommendations and reports to the govt.
