Three of India's top four carmakers reported weak sales to dealers in April, company data showed on Thursday, as buyers delayed purchases amid concerns about slowing economic growth.
Market leader Maruti Suzuki posted a marginal 0.6% year-on-year rise, while Hyundai Motor India and Tata Motors clocked declines of 11.6% and 5.1%, respectively.
Mahindra & Mahindra, in contrast, reported a near 28% jump in monthly sales, aided by strong demand for its 'XUV 3X0' and five-door 'Thar' SUVs.
That helped the 'Scorpio' maker overtake Hyundai and Tata Motors to the no. 2 spot in India's car market for the second time this year.
The four automakers together account for 80% of a market that saw record sales of 4.3 million units last year. Their combined sales were up about 1.4% in April, led largely by Mahindra.

The country's economic growth is seen slowing down, with the central bank projecting full-year GDP growth of 6.5% for fiscal 2025, lower than the 9.2% recorded the year before.
KEY CONTEXT
Car sales are cooling as the post-pandemic pent-up demand, which propelled sales to record highs in past years, has faded. Growth slowed to 2% in financial year 2025, from 8% the previous year and 27% in fiscal 2023, with industry experts attributing the moderation to a broader economic slowdown.
Manufacturers expect car sales to grow 1%-2% this year, although some analysts expect growth to pick up by June or September on lower interest rates and a cut in personal income tax.
Phillip Capital said that buyers were postponing purchases, with the trend likely to continue for up to four months.

The upcoming high-performance electric sedan was hinted at earlier this year, and it builds on the success of the Ioniq 5 N, which was launched two years ago. Hyundai is aiming to expand its N portfolio of high-performance variants with the Ioniq 6 N being the latest entry on the list. While the teaser images do not reveal much, they do show off the electric sedan's silhouette, rear wing, and taillights, among other details. The Ioniq 6 N carries over the design changes made with the MY26 Ioniq 6, comprising an aerodynamically streamlined design with a sharp bonnet and sleek LED DRLs. It features flared-out fenders, which bring a much wider stance, and gets new lightweight wheels. The rear end features a ducktail spoiler and a large wing, designed through numerous tests for aerodynamic efficiency. Although the car does not seem to have a connected taillamp, it will feature a dotted line of smaller pixels arranged horizontally across the boot lid. Hyundai Ioniq 6 N: Technical details The Ioniq 6 N will likely be built on the same E-GMP platform as the Ioniq 5 N and will share its 641 bhp electric powertrain. Hyundai says the Ioniq 6 N embodies three core performance pillars, which are 'Corner Rascal', 'Racetrack Capability', and 'Everyday Sportscar'. To this end, the electric sedan is not expected to fall short of expectations. While there are no available details regarding the specifications, the Ioniq 6 N is expected to carry over the same 641 bhp AWD electric powertrain that underpins the Ioniq 5 N. The Ioniq 5 N is built on the E-GMP (Electrified-Global Modular Platform) that also underpins the Ioniq 6 and Kia EV6. It brings a dual-motor setup, with the front electric motor putting out 222 bhp and the rear delivering 377 bhp. With this, the Ioniq 5 N can accelerate from 0-100 kmph in 3.4 seconds, topping out at a speed of 260 kmph. It is propelled by an 84 kWh battery pack, enabling a single-charge driving range of 355 km. The Ioniq 6 N will most likely be built on the same platform and is expected to feature similar specifications, if not identical. Hyundai will officially debut the Ioniq 6 N at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July 2025. India's Tata Motors plans to invest up to 350 billion rupees ($4.1 billion or Rs 35,000 crore) over the next five years, aiming to cement its position as the country's top electric vehicle maker amid rising competition and a push to adopt clean cars. The maker of the Nexon and Punch sport utility vehicles will nearly double its portfolio from eight models to 15, launch more EVs and compressed natural gas cars as well as enhance the vehicles' technology features, according to its investor day presentation released on Monday. India, the world's third-largest car market, is planning stricter emission norms starting 2027 and wants EVs to form 30% of all car sales by 2030. Tata Motors did not share its investment plan for the current year to March 2026, but said last month the domestic businesses, including commercial vehicles, would have a capital expenditure of about 80 billion rupees. Intense competition in the combustion engine market has allowed rival Mahindra & Mahindra to overtake Tata. China's MG Motor has also challenged Tata's EV dominance with the "Windsor" model, outselling its products since late last year. Car dealers sit on ₹52k cr stock as sales slow, inventories hit record high

Car dealerships in India are facing mounting pressure as unsold vehicle inventory has reached an all-time high of ₹51,000–₹52,000 crore in value terms. This sharp rise comes despite a year-long trend of muted retail demand, according to a report by The Economic Times. The current stock level by volume — estimated at 440,000 units or 34-38 days of inventory — is only slightly below last year's Diwali peak of 40-45 days. However, the sharp increase in vehicle prices and gradual stock build-up has pushed the total value to unprecedented levels. The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) has pegged the inventory even higher, estimating 52-53 days of stock at dealerships. This growing mismatch between wholesale dispatches and retail sales has raised concerns over working capital stress for dealers, many of whom are struggling with stock that remains unsold for extended periods, The Economic Times reported. Retail sales slump despite wholesale push Retail car sales in May stood at 302,214 units — a 3.14 per cent decline compared to the same month last year. The decline in monthly volumes marked the slowest growth in eight months and the lowest monthly figure so far in the current calendar year. Cars have remained in dealer yards for over 50 days on average for nearly 14 consecutive months — more than double the industry norm of 21 days, noted Vigneshwar, a dealer representative, the news report mentioned. Despite concerns raised by dealers, major carmakers such as Hyundai and Maruti Suzuki maintain that their inventory levels remain within acceptable limits. Hyundai Motor India's COO Tarun Garg said the company is maintaining a 'healthy inventory level of four weeks' across its dealership network, similar to the same period last year. High demand, controlled stock levels Partho Banerjee, head of sales and marketing at Maruti Suzuki India, echoed this view, claiming an improvement over last year. 'Our inventory levels are much better than the previous year,' he said during a monthly sales call on June 2, adding that Maruti's inventory stood at around 35 days. Some specific models continue to see strong demand, with waiting lists in place. These include Maruti's Brezza and Ertiga, and Mahindra's Thar, Thar Roxx, and Scorpio-N. Select variants of Toyota's Hyryder and Hycross are also in high demand, with waiting periods ranging from four to ten weeks, according to a note by Nomura.
