Weak April Sales Hit Most Top Indian Carmakers As Demand Cools, Check Details
Maruti has held up better due to SUV demand and fleet sales, while Hyundai and Tata have struggled amid fewer new launches as they derive two-thirds of their sales from SUVs.
News18
Three of India's top four carmakers reported weak sales to dealers in April, company data showed on Thursday, as buyers delayed purchases amid concerns about slowing economic growth.
Market leader Maruti Suzuki posted a marginal 0.6% year-on-year rise, while Hyundai Motor India and Tata Motors clocked declines of 11.6% and 5.1%, respectively.
Mahindra & Mahindra, in contrast, reported a near 28% jump in monthly sales, aided by strong demand for its 'XUV 3X0' and five-door 'Thar' SUVs.
That helped the 'Scorpio' maker overtake Hyundai and Tata Motors to the no. 2 spot in India's car market for the second time this year.
The four automakers together account for 80% of a market that saw record sales of 4.3 million units last year. Their combined sales were up about 1.4% in April, led largely by Mahindra.
WHY IT MATTERS
India's auto sector makes up 7% of GDP and is a major employer.
The country's economic growth is seen slowing down, with the central bank projecting full-year GDP growth of 6.5% for fiscal 2025, lower than the 9.2% recorded the year before.
KEY CONTEXT
Car sales are cooling as the post-pandemic pent-up demand, which propelled sales to record highs in past years, has faded. Growth slowed to 2% in financial year 2025, from 8% the previous year and 27% in fiscal 2023, with industry experts attributing the moderation to a broader economic slowdown.
Manufacturers expect car sales to grow 1%-2% this year, although some analysts expect growth to pick up by June or September on lower interest rates and a cut in personal income tax.
Phillip Capital said that buyers were postponing purchases, with the trend likely to continue for up to four months.
Maruti has held up better due to SUV demand and fleet sales, while Hyundai and Tata have struggled amid fewer new launches as they derive two-thirds of their sales from SUVs.

Tata Motors returns to South African car market after six years
India's Tata Motors returned to South Africa's passenger vehicles market after a six-year absence, launching three ranges of SUVs and an entry-level compact hatchback to take on Chinese competitors. Growing demand for budget-friendly cars is luring global automakers to offer consumers more options, in a shift that spotlights rising reliance on low-cost imports from India and China, but puts a question-mark on future domestic production. "Our aspiration, as part of our mid-term plan, is to be one of the top five passenger vehicles in South Africa, with a 6% to 8% market share," Thato Magasa, the new country head for Tata Motor Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) said at Tuesday's launch. Tata unveiled the Punch compact sports utility vehicle (SUV), the Curvv coupe-inspired SUV, the compact hatchback Tiago and its flagship premium SUV Harrier, all combustion engine cars that go on sale from September. Its return pits Tata against a rising tide of Chinese automakers such as Chery Group, BYD, Beijing Automotive and GWM, which have offered competitively priced vehicles with different powertrains in recent years. Tata exited the passenger vehicles market in 2019 after selling brands such as its Indica hatchback, some of which were affordable but drew mixed reactions from consumers who opted for rivals. It retained commercial vehicle operations in South Africa, however. "We have listened, we have learned, and we have tailored our offering to meet South Africa's needs," Shailesh Chandra, managing director for TMPV and electric mobility, said at the event. In the second phase of its re-entry, Tata plans to bring its Nexon and Sierra SUVs to South Africa, operating through 40 dealerships nationwide, with plans to expand to 60 by 2026, Magasa added. Tata's passenger car division has appointed as its exclusive distributor Motus Holdings, South Africa's leading automotive group, which imports, distributes and sells cars.

Flash-charging 135-seater bus to cut costs by 30%: Union minister Gadkari
Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari revealed plans for a 135-seater bus powered by flash charging technology, while speaking at Business Standard's first Infrastructure Summit on Thursday. The bus, which is being developed in partnership with Tata group, will have all the modern facilities and will charge 30 per cent less than diesel powered buses, the minister said. Gadkari highlighted that the bus is one of the most ambitious projects aimed towards building a transport system of the international standard. "We have a lot of good roads, now we want to make a transport system that can be at par with the international transportation systems that can give relief to the people," the minister said. Gadkari suggested that the bus will have: Capacity of 135 seats Air-conditioning Comfortable executive chairs Television Space to keep a laptop in front of seats Flash charging for the bus Hostesses to serve fruits, packed food, and beverages (like air hostesses) The minister said that a pilot project is being carried out in Nagpur. Tata group has already started a new manufacturing plant in Dharwad, Karnataka. The technology has been taken from Siemens and Hitachi. "This will bring a revolutionary change in our transport system, people will not use their car for travelling from Delhi to Jaipur, Chandigarh or Dehradun," he said. The operating cost of these buses is estimated at ₹35-40 per km. Because of its flash charging technology, after a 40 kilometer long journey, it will halt at a bus stop and get recharged in just 40 seconds, enabling the next 40 km. During his address, the minister also said that hydrogen is the most important fuel for the future. Pollution has become a huge issue in India and the government has been promoting use of non-polluting sources to power personal and public transportation.
