Apple increases U.S. commitment to $600 billion, announces American Manufacturing Program

Business Wire14 hours ago
CUPERTINO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Apple® today announced a new $100 billion commitment to America, a significant acceleration of its U.S. investment that now totals $600 billion over the next four years. Today's announcement includes the ambitious new American Manufacturing Program (AMP), dedicated to bringing even more of Apple's supply chain and advanced manufacturing to the U.S. Through AMP, Apple will increase its investment across America and incentivize global companies to manufacture even more critical components in the United States.
'Today, we're proud to increase our investments across the United States to $600 billion over four years and launch our new American Manufacturing Program,' said Tim Cook, Apple's CEO. 'This includes new and expanded work with 10 companies across America. They produce components that are used in Apple products sold all over the world, and we're grateful to the President for his support.'
Apple parts and components manufactured in the U.S. ship to customers around the world; in fact, roughly two-thirds of the components made in the U.S. are exported to customers outside the U.S.
Today, Apple partners with thousands of suppliers across all 50 states, supporting more than 450,000 supplier and partner jobs. In the next four years, Apple plans to directly hire 20,000 people in the U.S. — the vast majority focused on R&D, silicon engineering, software development, and AI and machine learning.
Apple American Manufacturing Program
Apple is working with its suppliers to accelerate manufacturing in the U.S. through the new American Manufacturing Program. The first AMP partners include Corning, Coherent, GlobalWafers America (GWA), Applied Materials, Texas Instruments (TI), Samsung, GlobalFoundries, Amkor, and Broadcom. This builds on Apple's July commitment to buy American-made rare earth magnets from MP Materials.
The American Manufacturing Program will help fund a major expansion of Apple's long-standing partnership with Corning, bringing the world's largest and most advanced smartphone glass production line to a factory in Harrodsburg, Kentucky. The expansion means that soon, every iPhone® and Apple Watch® sold around the world will be built with Kentucky-made cover glass. The two companies will also open a new Apple-Corning Innovation Center in Kentucky.
Apple has also entered into a new multiyear agreement with Coherent, a longstanding partner that produces the VCSEL lasers that enable multiple features — including Face ID® — on iPhone and iPad® devices shipped around the world. This work takes place at Coherent's Sherman, Texas, facility.
In July, Apple also committed to buying American-made rare earth magnets developed by MP Materials — the only fully integrated rare earth producer in the United States — significantly expanding their flagship Independence facility in Fort Worth, Texas. These magnets will become part of Apple devices shipped around the world. The two companies will also establish a cutting-edge rare earth recycling line in Mountain Pass, California.
Apple Expands End-to-End American Silicon Supply Chain
With these new partnerships, Apple is leading the creation of an end-to-end silicon supply chain in the United States, with partners in every key aspect of silicon production.
This U.S. silicon supply chain is on track to produce more than 19 billion chips for Apple products in 2025. That includes TSMC in Arizona, which is producing tens of millions of chips for Apple using one of the most advanced process technologies in America. Apple is this factory's first and largest customer.
'Apple engineers work closely with suppliers across the United States to create silicon chips that are on the leading edge of innovation,' said Sabih Khan, Apple's chief operating officer. 'We're committed to supporting U.S. suppliers involved in every key stage of the chip-making process — from the earliest stages of research and development, to final fabrication and packaging. We want America to lead in this critical industry, and we're expanding our efforts to grow a silicon manufacturing ecosystem that will benefit innovators across America.'
Wafers are the building block of any silicon chip, and Apple is partnering with GlobalWafers America in Sherman, Texas, to produce advanced wafers for use in U.S.-based semiconductor fabs for the first time. American chip fabs like TSMC in Phoenix, Arizona, and Texas Instruments in Sherman, Texas, will use GWA's 300mm wafers to produce chips for iPhone and iPad devices sold in the U.S. and around the world. GWA uses silicon from U.S. sources, including from Corning's Hemlock Semiconductor, to produce the world's most advanced silicon wafers.
Apple is also partnering directly with Applied Materials to boost the production of semiconductor manufacturing equipment in the U.S. The Applied site in Austin, Texas, is a pivotal hub for manufacturing cutting-edge chip equipment.
Fabs take bare wafers and turn them into chips. Apple and Texas Instruments are expanding their partnership to increase future product collaboration and critical U.S. capacity for this work. Apple is making a new commitment with TI, which will support additional tool installations at its facility in Lehi, Utah, and a new facility in Sherman, Texas. These facilities are home to TI's most advanced process technologies and use American-made chip manufacturing equipment from Applied Materials' factory in Austin, as well as advanced silicon wafers from GlobalWafers America. These facilities will manufacture critical foundational semiconductors used for Apple products, including iPhone devices shipped in the U.S. and around the world.
Apple is also working with Samsung at its fab in Austin, Texas, to launch an innovative new technology for making chips, which has never been used before anywhere in the world. By bringing this technology to the U.S. first, this facility will supply chips that optimize power and performance of Apple products, including iPhone devices shipped all over the world.
GlobalFoundries and Apple have also entered an agreement to bring more semiconductor manufacturing to the United States, focused on manufacturing cutting-edge wireless technologies and advanced power management — critical technologies that enable longer battery life and enhanced connectivity in Apple devices. The partnership will bring new capabilities, jobs, and technology to the GlobalFoundries semiconductor facility in Malta, New York.
Packaging is the final critical step in manufacturing silicon chips. Apple is investing in Amkor's new advanced chip packaging and test facility in Arizona, and will be its first and largest customer. This will accelerate the development of packaging capabilities in America, meaningfully strengthening the semiconductor supply chain in the U.S. This facility will package and test Apple silicon manufactured at the nearby TSMC fab, and create chips used in iPhone devices shipped around the world.
Apple is also working with Broadcom and GlobalFoundries to develop and manufacture additional cellular semiconductor components in the U.S. These components are crucial for 5G communications in Apple products.
New and Expanded Facilities Across the U.S.
Earlier this year, construction began in Houston on the new factory supporting production of advanced Apple servers, and in July, the facility produced its first test unit. The 250,000-square-foot server manufacturing facility is slated to begin mass production in 2026.
Previously manufactured outside the U.S., the servers from Houston will play a key role in powering Apple Intelligence™, and are the foundation of Private Cloud Compute, which combines powerful AI processing with the most advanced security architecture ever deployed at scale for AI cloud computing. The servers bring together years of R&D by Apple engineers, and deliver the industry-leading security and performance of Apple silicon to the data center.
In Detroit, registration is now open for the new Apple Manufacturing Academy, which was announced in February and is set to open on August 19. The academy will offer consultations and courses to small and medium-sized business on how they can implement advanced manufacturing and AI into their manufacturing programs.
Construction is also underway in Maiden, North Carolina, where Apple is expanding the capacity of its data center with a significant investment in its state-of-the-art facility that supports North American users of Apple services. The expansion builds on more than $5 billion that Apple has already invested in Catawba County.
Apple's Maiden facility supports Apple's services such as iCloud®, the App Store®, Apple Music®, iMessage®, Apple TV+®, Apple Sports™, and more. The expanded capacity will also help support the growth of Apple Intelligence. As with all of Apple's facilities, the data center is powered by 100 percent renewable energy sourced from Apple-created projects in the region.
Apple is also expanding data center capacity in states across the country, with construction underway in Iowa, Nevada, and Oregon.
Meanwhile, construction continues on Apple's second campus in Austin. Apple has more than 13,000 team members across Texas, including thousands already working from the three completed office buildings, which exceed 1 million square feet. The three buildings currently under construction include an expansive new R&D lab space for Apple's Hardware Engineering, Hardware Technology, and Software Engineering teams.

Tech shares lift Wall St futures on tariff exemption hopes

(Reuters) -U.S. stock index futures rose on Thursday, pointing to fresh gains on Wall Street, on signs that major technology companies will avoid President Donald Trump's latest tariffs on chip imports. Apple's shares climbed 3.2% in premarket trading, having risen 5.1% and led gains on Wall Street in the prior session, after Trump said the iPhone maker will invest an additional $100 billion in the U.S., bringing its total commitment to $600 billion over the next four years. Trump also announced a tariff of about 100% on imports of semiconductors but said it would not apply to companies that are manufacturing in the U.S. or have committed to do so. Shares of chipmakers including Nvidia, Advanced Micro Devices and Intel rose in the range of 1.2% to 2.5%. At 06:16 a.m. ET, S&P 500 E-minis were up 53.75 points, or 0.84%, Nasdaq 100 E-minis were up 197 points, or 0.84%, and Dow E-minis were up 274 points, or 0.62%. The president's higher tariffs of 10% to 50% on dozens of trading partners took effect on Thursday. Still, expectations of policy easing by the Federal Reserve - sparked by some disappointing economic data, particularly the July payrolls report - as well as optimism around AI spending by companies have kept markets near record highs. Following the latest jobs data, traders have almost fully priced in a 25 basis point rate cut in September and expect at least two rate cuts this year, according to the CME Group's FedWatch tool. Weekly jobless claims data, due at 08:30 a.m. ET, could offer fresh clues on the health of the labor market and shift rate cut expectations. Investors are also watching for Trump's interim replacement for Fed Governor Adriana Kugler in the coming days, amid expectations that the nominee would be a policy dove who will likely favor bringing interest rates lower. Kugler's resignation leaves an opening at the seven-member Fed Board led by Chair Jerome Powell, who Trump has repeatedly criticized for not cutting borrowing costs. Powell's tenure is due to end in May 2025. Second-quarter earnings barrage continued at full throttle. DoorDash topped revenue estimates and forecasted a stronger-than-expected gross merchandise value for the current quarter. Its shares jumped 8.6%. Lyft's quarterly revenue miss took its stock down 2.3%, even as the ride-hailing firm gave an upbeat gross bookings forecast for the September quarter. Constellation Reports Second Quarter 2025 Results

BALTIMORE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Constellation Energy Corporation (Nasdaq: CEG) today reported its financial results for the second quarter of 2025. 'With increasing demand for electricity to power American families and businesses, AI, electric vehicles and industrial growth, we're doing our part to ensure reliability and affordability,' said Joe Dominguez, president and CEO of Constellation. 'We are adding megawatts to the grid through extending the lives of our existing fleet, expediting the Crane Clean Energy Center restart, expanding nuclear plant capacity through uprates, and launching a new, AI-powered demand response tool that helps businesses reduce energy use during periods of peak demand. These efforts reduce costs for everyone while strengthening grid reliability and reflect the kind of leadership our customers, our communities and our economy need right now.' 'Backed by continued strong performance from our Generation and Commercial businesses, Constellation delivered adjusted operating earnings of $1.91 per share this quarter, up from $1.68 per share in Q2 last year,' said Dan Eggers, chief financial officer, Constellation. 'We're reaffirming our full-year adjusted operating earnings guidance range of $8.90-$9.60 per share. Following recent approval from FERC, our transaction with Calpine remains on track to close by year-end as we look to combine two leading generation fleets and two exceptional teams to enhance our ability to serve our customers and communities coast-to-coast.' Second Quarter 2025 Our GAAP Net Income for the second quarter of 2025 increased to $2.67 per share from $2.58 per share in the second quarter of 2024. Adjusted (non-GAAP) Operating Earnings for the second quarter of 2025 increased to $1.91 per share from $1.68 per share in the second quarter of 2024. For the reconciliations of GAAP Net Income (Loss) to Adjusted (non-GAAP) Operating Earnings, refer to the GAAP/Adjusted (non-GAAP) Operating Earnings Reconciliation section below. Adjusted (non-GAAP) Operating Earnings in the second quarter of 2025 primarily reflects: Higher IL banked ZEC revenues and favorable market and portfolio conditions, partially offset by lower nuclear PTCs due to higher anticipated gross receipts for the year Recent Developments and Second Quarter Highlights 20-Year Deal with Meta for clean, reliable nuclear energy: We have signed a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement with Meta for the full output of the Clinton Clean Energy Center to support their clean energy goals and operations. The agreement, beginning in June of 2027, supports the relicensing and continued operations of the Clinton nuclear facility for another two decades and will allow us to expand Clinton's clean energy output by 30 megawatts through plant uprates. The Clinton Clean Energy Center will continue to flow power onto the local grid, providing grid reliability and low-cost power to the region for decades to come. Legislative support for nuclear energy: Bipartisan support for nuclear energy continues at both the federal and state levels. Passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act preserves and expands the nuclear provisions enacted in the Inflation Reduction Act. These are the only tax credits that have received overwhelming support from both the Republican and Democratic congressional delegations. Federal initiatives are also underway to expand the existing fleet with fast-track licensing, increase domestic conversion and enrichment of nuclear fuel, and accelerate deployment of new reactors, all while maintaining the NRC's track record of being a responsible regulator to what is considered the safest nuclear fleet in the world. At the State level, just last week policymakers in New York called for extension of the ZEC program to ensure that the existing nuclear fleet continues to operate while NY also pursues 1 GW of new nuclear generation in the state. In Maryland and Texas, policymakers are proceeding with implementation to procure and provide financial support for new nuclear reactors in those states. Calpine Acquisition: We received regulatory approval from the New York State Public Service Commission, the Public Utility Commission of Texas, and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for our acquisition of Calpine. We continue to expect this transaction to close in the 4th quarter of this year. Crane Clean Energy Center will return to service in 2027: Exceptional project execution will allow the Crane Clean Energy Center to return to service in 2027, ahead of our original schedule. The project was selected by PJM for expedited grid connection as part of its Reliability Resource Initiative and we are ahead of schedule for other long lead time items. Restarting Crane's Unit 1 reactor will bring new clean, firm, reliable energy to the grid at a time when it is needed to support growing demand. Delivering on Our Capital Allocation Promises: In the second quarter we continued our share repurchase program, entering into an Accelerated Share Repurchase agreement with a financial institution to initiate the repurchase of approximately $400 million of our common stock. In addition we continued to deliver on our commitment to increase dividends by 10% in 2025. 2025 Great Place to Work Certification: For the third year in a row we were Certified™ by Great Place To Work®. The designation is based on how our employees rate their experience working at Constellation. In a survey of about 5,000 of our employees, 86% of those who responded said it is a great place to work – about 29 points higher than the average U.S. company. Great Place To Work® is acknowledged worldwide as a global benchmark for workplace culture, employee experience and the leadership behaviors proven to deliver strong market performance, employee retention and increased innovation. Nuclear Operations: Our nuclear fleet, including our owned output from the Salem and South Texas Project (STP) Generating Stations, produced 45,170 gigawatt-hours (GWhs) in the second quarter of 2025, compared with 45,314 GWhs in the second quarter of 2024. Excluding Salem and STP, our nuclear plants at ownership achieved a 94.8% capacity factor for the second quarter of 2025, compared with 95.4% for the second quarter of 2024. There were 41 planned refueling outage days in the second quarter of 2025 and 49 in the second quarter of 2024 for sites we operate. There were 22 non-refueling outage days in the second quarter of 2025 and three in the second quarter of 2024 for sites we operate. Natural Gas, Oil, and Renewables Operations: The dispatch match rate for our gas and pumped storage fleet was 98.3% in the second quarter of 2025, compared with 98.0% in the second quarter of 2024. Renewable energy capture for our wind, solar and run-of-river hydro fleet was 96.1% in the second quarter of 2025, compared with 96.6% in the second quarter of 2024. The Apple Watch Series 10 Is by Far My Favorite Smartwatch, and It's 25% Off Right Now

I've tested dozens of smartwatches over the years, and whenever I'm done with a review, I like to go bare-wristed for a few days to have a bit of a reset. But after I finished my review of the Apple Watch Series 10, I found that I didn't want to take it off. And it's been on my wrist ever since. I've always been on the lookout for a hybrid watch that strikes the right balance between a traditional wristwatch and a smartwatch. Plenty of wearables over the years have promised just that, including the Withings Scanwatch range. The Series 10, which tops our list of the best smartwatches for 2025, and is a CNET Editors' Choice Award winner, strikes the perfect balance. It's the perfect combination of wireless connectivity, fitness tracking features and aesthetics. And right now, Amazon will sell you one for just $299. For me, the Apple Watch Series 10 is the perfect combination of functionality and looks. That's because of the LTPO 3 technology that lets the screen refresh at 1Hz and gives the Series 10 a ticking second hand on a few watch faces, even when the display isn't actively being used. It makes Apple's device feel like a regular watch when I'm not actively using it, which is different from any other smartwatch I've tested. I like being able to change up the look by switching between the Reflections watch face, with its sweeping "analog" second hand, and Activity Digital, with its digital seconds counter. I wish there were more watch faces that supported this ticking second hand. There is Flux, but I've found myself siding with Redditors who think it's kind of goofy. (If you've found a color combination that makes it feel less comical, let me know!) The ticking second hand isn't just an aesthetic choice, or for the times when I'm anxiously checking to make sure I'm not too early for my next meeting. It's also practical for folks in different professions, like health care workers who need to have a second hand even after the display times out. More than the ticking second hand, it's the display itself I was skeptical that the Series 10's wide-angle OLED display would make that much difference to the viewing experience. Apple says it's up to 40% brighter than earlier watch displays when you're looking at it off-axis. So of course I had to compare it to every other Apple Watch in my review cabinet, including the Series 9. When using my eyes alone I'm not able to quantify how much brighter it appears as a percentage, there's no question the Series 10 is easier to see and looks brighter than other Apple Watch models with the same watch face. The Series 10 doesn't have the same battery life or rugged construction, but I miss its display when I have to switch to the $799 Apple Watch Ultra 2. Apple Watch Series 10 specs Case sizes: 42mm, 46mm 42mm, 46mm Battery life: Up to 18 hours Up to 18 hours Screen: LTPO3 OLED Always-On Retina display LTPO3 OLED Always-On Retina display Refresh rate: 1Hz 1Hz Brightness: Up to 2,000 nits Up to 2,000 nits Water resistance: Up to 50m Why I never want to take it off It's not just the display that's made it hard for me to remove the Series 10 from my wrist. There's almost every health and fitness tracking feature I could want, from a range of cycling tools to sleep apnea notifications, which is part of the reason this watch tops our list of the best smartwatches for 2025. Then there's WatchOS 11, which brings helpful safety tools like Check In to my wrist, so I no longer have to manually send the "I'm home!" message to friends and family. If only it worked with recipients who don't use iMessage: I truly hope Apple will add compatibility for RCS messaging for this indispensable safety tool, just like FaceTime works on Android through a web link. I now understand what people mean when they say they feel naked when they leave their house without their phones. Except for me, it's a watch.
