Charlotte FC goalie describes how unique pre-match tradition fuels his focus
'You can play 85 minutes – a great game, have amazing saves and make one small mistake, even a small one, and it can be decided that we will lose the game,' Kahlina told Channel 9′s DaShawn Brown.

Kahlina added, 'For the goalkeepers…you need to concentrate on every small part of the game.'

It starts before the match, where the league's reigning goalkeeper of the year is consistently in search of an edge – often on film – and quite literally everywhere.
'It started when I came here because it was the first time that I came to America,' said Kahlina, who is also the reigning Major League Soccer Goalkeeper of The Year.
When Kahlina first signed with Charlotte FC from a club in Europe, he'd venture out on pre-match walks to keep himself occupied during road trips alert.

It evolved when two staffers joined him, pinpointing at least one stop unique to each city they traveled to over the course of the season.
Three years later, he's changed it up again, gathering any bit of insight every step of the way.
'Now, I walk with a really good friend. Then you are speaking about the game, which players they have, how the weather will be…you are taking some concentration to be focused on the game,' Kahlina said.
With Kristijan Kahlina, it's focus that's never wavered, even with the honors, and the expectations.
'Until 26, I wasn't a professional footballer. I was an amateur, without a contract, without an agent or anything serious. Even now, yes, I am goalkeeper of the year from the last year,' Kahlina said. 'It's a big thing for me, but why can't I do this again this year?'

Inter Miami trades Drake Callender to Charlotte FC, Fede Redondo also leaving
Drake Callender, Inter Miami's starting goalkeeper for the club's record-breaking run to the 2024 MLS Supporters' Shield and the 2023 Leagues Cup title, was traded to Charlotte FC, a club source confirmed Tuesday night. Tom Bogert of GiveMeSport was the first to report the news. Callender, 27, has been injured most of this season, started only three games and has been out since having sports hernia surgery in April. He got injured during a January U.S. national team camp and lost the starting job to 39-year-old Argentine Oscar Ustari, a friend of Lionel Messi's who stepped up and played well in Callender's absence. Ustari has been praised for his leadership skills on and off the field. Ustari missed a few recent games with a hamstring injury, and third-string keeper Rocco Rios Novo rose to the occasion, which apparently made Callender more expendable. Callender played a club-record 118 games for Inter Miami and was the only player left from the club's original 2020 roster. He gave up 183 goals and had 19 shutouts. The California native was co-captain of the team in 2023 and 2024, and kept Miami in many games with big saves. 'He speaks the international language, which is `He's a badass,'' said Henry Foulk, Callender's college goalkeeping coach at Cal Berkeley. 'These high-profile players are great, but they're aging, not as fast as they used to be, can't jump as high, and they know Drake can stop the ball and he's going to bail their ass out of some tough situations.' Foulk lauded Callender's style of play. 'The great keepers go from having strong, hard hands to having soft, shock-absorbing hands,' Foulk said. 'Some guys bang balls out with flair but give up a lot more rebounds. Drake goes all out to get the ball and right when he gets there, he takes a deep breath for a fraction of a second and is then able to absorb the velocity of the ball, bring it in, collect and catch it.' Despite his impressive resume in previous seasons, his injury struggles and Ustari's performance kept him out of Miami's plans. He will have to fight for a starting spot in Charlotte, as well, as that team has the reigning MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Kristijan Kahlina. Callender isn't the only Inter Miami player on his way out. According to multiple reports, Argentine midfielder Fede Redondo is headed to Spanish La Liga club Elche. Soccer journalist Cesar Luis Merlo reported that Redondo was sold for a $2.5 million transfer fee, which is half of what Miami reportedly paid for him last year. Redondo, 22, was a member of Argentina's U23 national team and is the son of former Real Madrid great Fernando Redondo. Despite his pedigree and high expectations, he had trouble keeping a starting job in a loaded midfield roster that includes Sergio Busquets, Yannick Bright, Benja Cremaschi, and the recently-signed Rodrigo De Paul, a star on Argentina's national team. Merlo also reported that Inter Miami is in advanced talks with Mexican team Cruz Azul to sign Argentine defender Gonzalo Piovi.

NRL fans call for immediate action after Ray Warren goes public with sad revelation
NRL fans are calling on Channel 9 to do everything in their powers to accommodate Ray Warren's return to the commentary box - even if it means installing a state-of-the-art facility in his house. The 82-year-old is a legend of Australian sporting commentary, with NRL fans regularly lamenting the fact he's no longer in the box. Warren retired in 2021 after a career that spanned over 50 years and saw him call 99 State of Origin games, 45 grand finals, the Olympics, Commonwealth Games and numerous major swimming meets. Last year there were rumours he was keen to come out of retirement and call his 100th Origin game, but he put those to bed and has always resisted calls to return. But speaking on 2GB radio this week, 'Rabs' admitted he's struggling in retirement and is deeply missing commentating. 'I am not handling it (my retirement) all that well to be honest,' he said in an interview with Mark Levy. 'Leaving what I was doing was like cutting off my arm. (But) I was 78 when I gave it away, so I didn't have much longer to go.' Ray Warren flags possibility of calling NRL games from home Warren admitted he wouldn't be able to call games in-person anymore, but would be open to doing it from the comfort of his home. Although he admitted he'd be worried he'd undo all the good work he's done if he made some major mistakes. 'It is flattering (that people want me to come out of retirement) and I guess I love it deep down, but I don't think they realised I was 78 when I gave it away and I didn't want to undo all the good I might have done,' he said. 'That's the long and the short of it. But now I sit down and think I might be able to do a call from home.' Another wrote: "Make it a national priority." While a third added: "I want a state of the art recording studio set up in his house within the next 24 hours." Ray Warren previously shot down calls to return Many pointed out that networks often don't send their commentators to the game in-person, with calling from a studio becoming more commonplace in the last few years. Since Warren's retirement, the state of NRL commentary has always been a source of frustration for fans. 'I had a great career, 55 years," he said last year. "At the end of 2021, I decided that that would do me. Why would I take that risk of undoing whatever good I might have done? I got out while I was going reasonably well.' He previously admitted State of Origin could be do-able because it's "one of the easier games to call because everyone knows the players so well." Watford hope for Chakvetadze return in September
Watford hope Georgia international Giorgi Chakvetadze will finally return to action next month following a frustrating injury lay-off. The Hornets playmaker has not been available since April because of what the club describe as a "complex" bone issue in his foot, the result of "overload and repetitive impacts". Chakvetadze first joined Watford on loan from KAA Gent in the summer of 2023 before making the move permanent and has established himself as one of the best players in the Championship. The club stated the 25-year-old reported early for pre-season training but the injury is in a "slow-healing area". Watford group dynamic will help youngsters - Selvik A statement continued: "A scan in June showed the issue was still present but less severe, so he was phased progressively back into the main group last month and was scheduled to play some part in the friendly win against Deportivo. "However, Chakvetadze reported pain after five sessions and, as a precaution, was re-scanned. "After consultation with industry-leading foot experts, a period of non-impact and work on strength and conditioning only has been advised for six weeks, two of which will be during the first international break." He will have another scan at the end of that period with a view to re-joining the first-team squad if it is all-clear. Chakvetadze has made 78 appearances for Watford - who began the new season with a 1-0 defeat by Charlton Athletic - and has scored three goals.
