"My Fair Lady" enchants at San Francisco Playhouse

Axios11-07-2025
Fans of musical theater are in for a real treat: "My Fair Lady" has landed at the San Francisco Playhouse.
Why it matters: The theater company is ending on a crowd favorite for the last show of the 2025 season. Devotees of the 1964 Audrey Hepburn film won't be disappointed.
State of play: The musical's leads are all standouts. Adam Magill is a triumph as Henry Higgins and Jillian A. Smith brings a soaring voice and beautiful fragility as Eliza Dolittle.
Don't sleep on the supporting cast — I could've watched Heather Orth deliver the withering glances of Henry Higgins' housekeeper Mrs. Pearce all night.
Between the lines: Both the film and musical run for nearly three hours, but the Playhouse production is as well-paced as an Ascot race horse.
The show hews closely to the film in keeping many beloved set pieces — such as the masterfully choreographed street-sweeper dance sequences and famous race scene, complete with elaborate monochrome costumes.
My thought bubble: As an Aussie in America, I've heard my fair share of mangled Commonwealth accents onstage. But the cast largely passed the test of capturing London's varied accents, thanks to the production's dialect coaches. I was especially impressed by Eliza's elocutionary glow-up by Act II.

triple j's Hottest 100 Of Australian Songs: The Complete List

After Aussie music fans lodged more than 2.6 million votes in triple j's historic, first ever Hottest 100 of Australian songs, the results were counted down live from 100 – 1 today across the entire triple j network – triple j, Double J, Unearthed Radio and Hottest – with the top spot ultimately being taken out by INXS's 1988 classic 'Never Tear Us Apart' off their iconic Kick LP. The top 3 was rounded out by Aussie hip-hop veterans' Hilltop Hoods' 2003 anthem 'Nosebleed Section at number #2 and The Veronicas' 'Untouched' at #3. INXS – 'Never Tear Us Apart' A stack of legacy artists bagged multiple entries, with INXS also snagging the #59th spot on the list with 'Need You Tonight', Hilltop Hoods bagging an additional two spots with 'Hilltop Hoods – '1955 [Ft. Montaigne, Tom Thum]' coming in at #73 and 'Cosby Sweater' at #64. Elsewhere, Jimmy Barnes and Bernard Fanning both got a big guernsey, with Barnsey getting up with 'Working Class Man' (#56) as well as a pair of Cold Chisel tracks – 'Khe Sanh' and 'Flame Trees' voted in back-to-back at #7 and #8 in the top 10. Fanning snagged four total entries with his solo track 'Wish You Well' hitting #57, and Powderfinger Odyssey Number 5 banger 'My Happiness' cracking the top 10 at #6, while 'These Days' came in at #14 and '(Baby I've Got You) On My Mind' nabbed #70. Meanwhile, other veteran acts live Crowded House, Midnight Oil, AC/DC and Silverchair all nabbed three songs apiece. On the more modern side of things, Gang Of Youths also scored a hattrick (#87 'The Deepest Sighs, The Frankest Shadows', #60 'Let Me Down Easy', #42 'Magnolia'). The newest song to make the countdown was Amyl & The Sniffers' 'Hertz' from 2021, voted in at #89. Triple j's decision to launch the first ever Australian-only Hottest 100 ballot coincides with the youth broadcaster celebrating its 50th year on air, and follows criticism off the back of January's Hottest 100 of 2024, which was widely noted for its lack of local representation in favour of big international superstars such as Chappell Roan, Charli XCX, Billie Eilish, Lola Young, Gracie Abrams, Kendrick Lamar and Fred Again dominating the countdown. Tate McRae and The Kid LAROI's Relationship and Breakup Timeline

If you haven't heard the news: Tate McRae is taking over the music industry rn, and the only thing I care more about than getting tickets to her Miss Possessive Tour is her relationship with fellow musician The Kid LAROI. The two first sparked dating rumors in early 2024—but if you're wondering whether Tate and the Aussie-born rapper (real name Charlton Howard) are still an item (especially after seeing those handsy bodyguard boat pics...), you've come to the right place. Let's get into it, shall we? Editor's note: This timeline is in reverse chronological order, so the ~freshest~ deets are smack-dab at the top. Enjoy! Following weeks of speculation, LAROI took to his X account on July 25 to seemingly confirm the split. In response to a post claiming that his team was paying to have slanderous tweets about Tate posted across the platform, LAROI stated, 'I have NOTHING to do with this and I DO NOT co sign this behavior whatsoever. working to get these removed.' Along with the post, he shared a screenshot of a conversation with his team stating that he and Tate 'are on good terms' and encouraging them to have the posts removed. While on vacay in Saint-Tropez, Tate is photographed on a yacht with friends, where LAROI is nowhere in a mystery man (later ID'd as her bodyguard) looks veeeery cozy with her. Not long after, a tipster for DeuxMoi claims to spot LAROI at L.A. hotspot Barr Seco holding hands with a new woman, who they describe as 'short and blonde' with a 'definitely more edgy vibe.' Iiiinteresting. During an interview with Elle (which dropped in early June), LAROI calls his girlfriend 'the hardest working artist' he's ever met. Oh, and he also said of Tate: 'Every time she smiles, it makes me weak.' My heart! Tate and LAROI head to Paris to attend the French Open, and LAROI posts some cute pics from the trip to IG. The two hit up Coachella together, where they hang with the Biebers and look very ~in lurve.~ Tate and LAROI go red carpet official at the Vanity Fair Oscars party... ...and link up with Olivia Rodrigo and Louis Partridge in the process. During an interview with Apple Music's Zane Lowe, Tate opens up about what it was like to work with LAROI on her new album, So Close to What. She reveals that they've written two songs together and says, 'It felt really fresh. We've never sang in front of each other until August. I pulled him out for one of my shows. And it was so funny, we're sitting in soundcheck and neither of us wanted to start singing.' She adds that she 'wouldn't look at him' while they sang together because she wasn't used to their new dynamic as collaborators, explaining, 'It's like a mental thing where I just feel like he's never heard me sing, and I like to pretend that he doesn't know I'm a singer, but he does obviously know I'm a singer.' Tate also dishes that they were both nervous as they cut tracks in the studio. 'It was funny. It was wholesome. It was cute, but it was definitely nerve-wracking for both of us who are usually so in our element and so controlling in the rooms. We both were like, 'Okay, who's going to lead the room?'' she shares, adding that they 'try to not talk about work as much as possible.' Oh, and LAROI makes it v clear how proud he is of his GF with a sweet IG message, where he writes, ''I KNOW LOVE' out now with my bestest friend on her album SC2W!!!!! watched @tatemcrae give EVERYTHING to this album and you can really hear that. it's incredible. to say I'm proud is an understatement. LOVE YOU GO LISTEN!!!!!' (The post has since been deleted.) LAROI leaves a sweet comment on this stunning pic of Tate. It's Valentine's Day, and Tate shares a pic of several dozen roses on her Instagram Stories with a bunch of crying face and heart emojis. Speaking of 'I Know Love,' the pair shares a snippet of the track on TikTok with a cute lip-sync video. Tate releases the official track list for her forthcoming third studio album, So Close to What, and it includes a collab with her boyfriend called 'I Know Love.' LAROI drops pics from an epic group trip to Mustique, which includes Olivia Rodrigo and Louis Partridge, Iris Apatow and Sam Nivola, actor and dancer Findlay McConnell, and ofc Tate—though sadly, the post has since been deleted. That same day, Tate shares her own round-up of photos: The couple is spotted strolling around NYC looking cool as hell. Observe: Nothing to see here, just two young ppl in luv walking hand-in-hand around New York. Tate and LAROI attend the MTV VMAs together, and though she walks the red carpet alone, they pack on the PDA in the audience. Later, after a 'fit change, they hit up the after-party. LAROI takes to IG to share photos from a romantic getaway with Tate to Bora Bora, though they have since been deleted. The lovebirds enjoy a night out together in NYC's NoHo following Tate's sold-out show at Madison Square Garden. Oh, and did I mention that LAROI joined Tate on stage at MSG for a performance of 'Without You'? Tate shares a cute vid to her Instagram Stories in honor of LAROI's 21st birthday. For Tate's 21st, LAROI posts a pic of himself smooching the star along with the caption, 'You make me better! I love yoooouuu.' During a show in Dublin as part of his The First Time tour, LAROI sneakily refers to Tate as his 'girlfriend,' effectively hard-launching their 'ship. Fans spot Tate and LAROI enjoying dinner together at E Baldi in L.A., adding fuel to romance rumors. The duo casually hangs out once again with Biebers during Super Bowl weekend, as captured by this photo posted by Justin himself: Tate and LAROI hold hands at the 2024 NHL All-Star Game in Toronto, where the Daily Mail obtains pics of them going on what looks like a double-date with Justin and Hailey Bieber. LAROI and Tate are snapped by paparazzi while enjoying a dinner date at Giorgio Baldi in Santa Monica. A video makes the rounds on the internet, showing Tate and LAROI seemingly vacationing in Mexico together with a group of friends. Tate also posts a photo dump from the trip, where she *appears* to be wearing LAROI's shirt in a few of the pics. And that's all for now! Stay tuned for more deets on these cuties.

Revealed: Meet the new MAFS Australia cast as filming for season 13 begins, from a reality star to influencer

We've only just said goodbye to the chaotic and beloved cast of the last season of Married at First Sight Australia, but already filming has begun on season 13, with a number of the cast being revealed. Over the past few weeks the first weddings for the new series have been taking place throughout Australia, with a number of nuptials being photographed and therefore revealing the new cast members taking the plunge to marry someone at first sight. So far we've seen about eight of the new cast members and they include some recognisable Aussie faces including a TV presenter, a reality star and an influencer. Ready to meet them? Here's everything to know about the cast of Married at First Sight Australia season 13. Bec, or Bec Zac as she is reportedly known to her friends as, was the first bride of the series to be announced and was photographed heading to her wedding last week. Bec is a real estate agent from Adelaide and her wedding took place in Sydney, however right now we don't know who her groom is. Another Rebecca! This time it's Rebecca Zukowski, who is a leasing manager from Melbourne. Her wedding to groom Steve Powell took place in Sydney's Centennial Park last week. Ahead of the show starting it's already been reported Rebecca is set to be this season's wild card, with the Daily Mail claiming: "She's wild – think Jamie [Marinos] – just with years of experience. She was overheard yelling on her balcony in between takes – it was a whole moment." Another insider told the publication Rebecca has "got this larger-than-life energy and doesn't tone herself down for anyone." Marrying Rebecca is Steve Powell, however, not much is known about him apart from his marriage right now. Gia is a micro-influencer from Melbourne with just over 30,000 followers on her now private Instagram account. A source told the Daily Mail Australia, Gia "doesn't give a single f*** what anyone thinks" and is "bold, she's brash and she says whatever's on her mind - which makes for absolutely iconic TV." She's getting married to reality star Scott McCristal who has previously appeared on a number of Aussie TV shows before. Pictures have surfaced of their pair's wedding taking place on a beach, with Gia showcasing her wedding garter on her leg in a number of pictures. Scott is a reality TV star in Australia, and has previously appeared on shows such as Blind Date, Holey Moley, and Million Dollar Island. He's previously spoken about his love of reality TV, telling The Courier Mail in 2018: "Tradie work is not for me. I want fame. My dream goal is to do TV and movies." When he's not doing reality TV, Scott keeps his 25,000 Instagram followers entertained and runs three businesses - a jet ski company, an asset finance business and sells cars too. Daniel is next on the list of next year's MAFS Australia cast. Daniel is a Melbourne based real estate agent, whose friends have described him as "fun, confident, and the life of the party." We're not quite sure who he is set to marry yet, but one thing we do know is in his career as an estate agent he's reportedly made $9.6 million in sales in the last year. Pretty impressive. Daniel is reportedly from Britain originally and was spotted outside his wedding ceremony. Ankita is a sports presenter, with a main specialist area of cricket and over the years has worked for Mumbai Indians and most recently Cricket Australia. She is also Miss India Australia Runner up and has nearly 40,000 followers on Instagram. Her wedding took place just days ago in Sydney to groom Micah Lomu, in which she looked stunning wearing a traditional Indian sequin lehenga. Not much is known about Micah apart from that he got married to Ankita and he is reportedly a finance broker. Married at First Sight Australia is available to catchup on on Channel 4
